patriot Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 http://stats.cricinfo.com/ci/engine/records/batting/most_runs_career.html?class=1;id=200;type=decade Since 2000: 32 tons in about 100 matches at a phenomenal average of 60..at an excellent strike rate of 62.25. Collectively no one is even close. By end of 2010, he would achieve in all these paramenters what no batsmen has ever done in a 10 year span in the history of test cricket. Apart from his shambolic record in India, his record his PHENOMENAL..he;s done superbly in Sri Lanka against Murali and co in tests.
Laaloo Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 A player like Sehwag can only dream about the records that Lord Ponting has. :adore:
patriot Posted August 6, 2009 Author Posted August 6, 2009 ^^. Sehwag has played less than 70 % of the matches Ponting has in this period, he would have been close had he played as many. But then again...Sehwag is in a league of his own, scoring at a strike rate close to what Ponting does in ODIS and still averaging 50 + as an opener. BTW if you want to talk about our players....say Sachin vs Veeru. I have a few questions. Do you know who out of the these two scored 1000 runs in fewer innings ? How about 2000 ? , 3000 ? , 4000 ? 5000 ???? Ans: Veeru.( now at 5757 runs)
kabira Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Since 2000 no Walsh Ambrose, retirement of Donald, Wasims etc. He never played Warne and Mcgrath, two greatest bowlers of all time
graphic23 Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Ricky Ponting has played more innings than anyone else in England (and vs. England) and has an amazing average of 32.27 - surely better than the guy who has played 6 fewer innings than him and has scored 200 fewer runs but an average of 66.18 - a difference of merely.. 24 runs/innings - oh you don't know this player? Name's Rahul Dravid I think - the #3 player for India. Ponting the amazing batsman in swinging conditions. You're right, no one can come close to him. ------------- Now that you've claimed something really stupid along the lines of "no one will ever come close to this kind of record" - Ponting has played 174 innings since 2000. One player Mr. X, played 105 innings in the 90s (say from 1 Jan 1990 - 1 Jan 2000), and has scored 5523 runs at an average of 59.38. Another player Mr. Y, played 112 innings in the same time period, and has scored 5573 runs at an average of 51.60. Unsurprisingly, Mr. X is head and shoulders and another human body above in terms of averages - in this duration. The next highest in terms of averages and someone who played this entire period is Mr. Z, averaging 51.8 - a difference of ~8 runs/innings. Now, looking at these stats, lets take a look at who were the top bowlers of the 1990s: Wasim/Waqar/Saqlain from Pakistan McGrath/Warne from Australia Ambrose/Walsh from West Indies Donald/Pollock from South Africa Muralitharan/Vaas from Sri Lanka A whole load of useless people from England (in b4 ban) Given this, the break down of Mr. X's runs in the 90s: vs. Australia, 58.5 average and 1053 runs in 11 matches vs. England, 81.25 average and 975 runs in 9 matches vs. New Zealand, 63.64 average and 891 runs in 12 matches vs. Pakistan, 30 average and 180 runs in 3 matches (with a 136 the HS) vs. South Africa, 33.83 average and 609 runs in 10 matches vs. Sri Lanka, 80.28 average and 1124 runs in 13 matches vs. West Indies, 62.81 average and 691 runs in 8 matches and looking at his away performance, in Australia, average of 49.75 in England, average of 74.77 in New Zealand, average of 49.75 in South Africa, average of 39.61 in Sri Lanka, average of 111.66 in West Indies, average of 57.80 ------------------------------------- Can you tell me how Ponting's statistics this decade (considering the bowlers involved) can match the record above of Mr. X? Oh, and no ICF$ for guessing who Mr. X is btw. I'll tell you who Y and Z are: Brian Charles Lara, and Steve Waugh, respectively.

LOL..do you even know how to see stats ..or you thought you can get away with bullshiiiting ? Ponting averges about 44 in Eng, not his greatest...but still better than what SRT has in places like South Africa and Pakistan. Sure..Ponting is a phenomenon that deserves to be hailed. I don't pretend to be blind and not acknowledge champions who play for other countries. By resorting to selective stats, you have truely opened a Pandora's box. How much does SRT average against South Africa ? During the time of Cronje, when Donald, Pollock and Devilliers were at their peak SRT averaged a pathetic 30 odd against them... BCL averages a pitiful 35 against India in 20 odd tests...while he averages 51+ against Aus, does that make our attack better than Aus ? Every tom dick and harry plunders runs in Eng including...the Moyos, Jayawardenes etc...heck Agarkar and Kumble have got test tons here, against " dreadful" swing bowling, Do you want me to pull up the stats of the test matches where SRT has played Aus with his nemesis Mcgrath ? Both his last 2 series..in Aus..he dint get to face his ultimate nemesis, as was in the recent series in India. The last time Mcgrath did play even in India..he owned SRT big time. NO . How did he fare against Aus and RSA i=in terms of averges when Mcgrath and Donald played ????? Care to put those averges ? :winky:
goose Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 Every single piece i've ever read eulogizing Ponting is riddled with numbers and statistics. Ponting has great numbers. Tendulkar is a great batsman.
patriot Posted August 6, 2009 Author Posted August 6, 2009 And how many tests did SRT he face against the great Akram ..at his peak ? Hardly. We never played Pakistan when Akram was at his devastating best.
rainy day Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 These numbers are mind blowing, Ponting is a goddamn run machine. Approaching 10,000 in a decade at an avg of 60.00 is unbelievable and very very hard to match.
patriot Posted August 6, 2009 Author Posted August 6, 2009 These numbers are mind blowing' date=' Ponting is a goddamn run machine. Approaching 10,000 in a decade at an avg of 60.00 is unbelievable and very very hard to match.[/quote'] EJJACTLY Thank you. Thats what I was trying to point. over 10000 runs in a decade ..with probably 35-36 tons is just unbelievable and sign of a man with a voracious appetite for runs. As usual someone had comprehending problems with such a basic pointer and starts playing silly riddles mr X and Mr Y ..and what not. :((
patriot Posted August 6, 2009 Author Posted August 6, 2009 Every single piece i've ever read eulogizing Ponting is riddled with numbers and statistics. Ponting has great numbers. Tendulkar is a great batsman. Disagree. Both are great. But one has a 50 times larger fan base so generates FAR more hype. Time and again our fans just eulogize about that Sharjah knock the finals in a masala tournament against an injured Warne and legends like Fleming, Tom Moody etc... Ponting blazed away our attack in the 2003 WC finals scoring 150 odd..when our attack( Zak, Sri, Nehra and bhaj) was in red hot form..throughout the tournamanent blowing away any chance for us to win the finals. How many people still talk about that ? And what is the difference in significance between those 2 knocks ? Like I said some people are a product of extreme hype...while others are as goodl or better but dont get talked about as much.
goose Posted August 6, 2009 Posted August 6, 2009 With respect, you have no idea and are beyond help.
patriot Posted August 6, 2009 Author Posted August 6, 2009 With respect' date=' you have no idea and are beyond help.[/quote'] ...and all that you have is just in your massive mind and can never be substantiated, so you must be right.
graphic23 Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 LOL..do you even know how to see stats ..or you thought you can get away with bullshiiiting ? Ponting averges about 44 in Eng, not his greatest...but still better than what SRT has in places like South Africa and Pakistan. Yeah, I was at fault there. That was a type. It was supposed to be 42.37, as 66-42 would tell you that its 24. Why're you telling me this? I answered these questions in my post because I've posted these stats. Bradman averages 85 against England when Hedley Verity played as opposed to his career average of 99.94. And Verity dismissed Bradman more than any other player of that era. So what? Every batsman has a nemesis in a bowler, and Glenn McGrath was an amazing bowler, and even Tendulkar respects him a lot. Both his last 2 series..in Aus..he dint get to face his ultimate nemesis, as was in the recent series in India. The last time Mcgrath did play even in India..he owned SRT big time. And you've completely forgotten the 126 at Chennai at Chepauk and the 114 at the MCG, right? You realize in the 1999 tour to Australia, McGrath, Warne, and Lee were playing right? Guess who won the Man of the Series? No, it was Ricky Ponting. It was Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar. Did he face ever face Waqar much at his peak apart from his debut ? NO . And thats Tendulkar's fault how? If the neighbors weren't half as obsessed about killing every Indian on the street, perhaps there would've been a truer picture as to how well Sachin could've fared against the cheaters across the border. If you're bringing this up, this is my last post in the thread because I can't debate with mentally retarded people. How did he fare against Aus and RSA i=in terms of averges when Mcgrath and Donald played ????? Care to put those averges ? :winky: Didn't I put that stuff up in my post earlier? Go ask Donald who was the toughest batsman he bowled to.. I think the answer will be the opposite of what you expect. Again, I'm not debating whether Ponting is a great batsman or not - I've argued with other members here defending Ponting. But you claimed that no one has had as successful a decade as this one for Ponting, and I disagreed. I consider Dravid, Tendulkar, Lara, and Steve Waugh (thanks to Mr. Wicket) as better batsmen and I will argue when you bring up the statistics. Did you really expect everyone to agree with you? You mentioned Tendulkar vs. McGrath, what about Ponting vs. Ishant Sharma and Ponting vs. Harbhajan Singh, Ponting vs. Ambrose ? Nevertheless, because you brought up the Pakistan point, that convinces me that you're a troll, and have no common sense. I don't want to waste my time.
Max_Cady Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 wow!!!!!!!!1 batting avg of 60 at sr of 62!!! these are huge numbers!!! so its offcial now. ricky 'big numberz ' ponting is da gr8est batsman eva since bradman. or MAYBE MAYBE he is even BETTER? i mean those numbers are gonna be even bigger by the time he retires!! i totally agree wit u patriot, and i think its shameful that india has never produced a batsman as gr8 as ricky. some day...:((
punjabi_khota Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 I still don't get why his name is patriot. :hmmmm2:
Freedom Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 SRT WAS IS and WILL be a better bat than Ponting. Enuf of lord ponting.Ponting Hayden and any other Aussie players started to speak about averages only when bowling greats retired or were about to retire. Only Brian Lara can be compared to SRT.Period
patriot Posted August 7, 2009 Author Posted August 7, 2009 Yeah, I was at fault there. That was a type. It was supposed to be 42.37, as 66-42 would tell you that its 24. . No it's 43.37. Check again. That is still more than what SRT averages in SA and Pak. So does that make him a poor player of quality pace ? Then again like I said such selective stats are meaningless. Far lesser players have scored heavily in England and struggled elsewhere. So whats our point ? VVS scored far better and bigger tons in both those series. Regarding his MOS in that series. I still remember Steve Waugh and Tony Greig calling it extremely biased adjudication for some commercial reasons. http://static.cricinfo.com/db/ARCHIVE/1999-2000/IND_IN_AUS/STATS/IND_IN_AUS_NOV1999-FEB2000_TEST_AVS.html SRT scored 278 runs in that series -was outscored by both Ponting and Langer ( 375 ) and ( 289 ) respectively. We lost 0-3 under his captaincy . But then he faced Mcgrath, Lee and Warne , right ? Guess what, Saeed Anwar against the very same attack, scored more runs ( 282), just 2 weeks back and was no where in contention for the MOS. Pray, could you explain such bizzare logic ? See below: http://stats.cricinfo.com/ci/engine/records/batting/most_runs_career.html?id=420;type=series Again, I'm not debating whether Ponting is a great batsman or not - I've argued with other members here defending Ponting. But you claimed that no one has had as successful a decade as this one for Ponting, and I disagreed. Nevertheless, because you brought up the Pakistan point, that convinces me that you're a troll, and have no common sense. I don't want to waste my time. Boss, you are the one sounding extremely insecure that someone could be more prolific than your hero. I have never said that Ponting is the greatest - all I pointed out was his achivements ( runs, centuries..etc) are unprecedented in cricket a decades timespan - which they are. When SRT was the numero uno in numbers...it was all about him, when someone outdoes him confortably stats become meaningless, he's the best because I say so. Thats your logic. The fact that we have been an average team for a great part of SRT's career - his individual records get celebrated more and most fans like yours thrive on that. The fact that Ponting has been of a champion team for most of his career his individual records are masked by his teams brilliance. This logic is probably beyond you. The fact that you have to get abusive and started loosing your cool, totally unprovoked as above shows you are not fit to have an objetive cricket discussion, let alone moderate a forum. yeah go back to your shell and don't waste your time.
patriot Posted August 7, 2009 Author Posted August 7, 2009 I still don't get why his name is patriot. :hmmmm2: Because patriot is about beng patriot about India, not being unduely patriot about a player. I have said this before as well Sehwag is the most valuable test batsman today, for what he does to attacks early on and for the morale of the opposition team. At his rate if he scales past 10K runs, he would be one of the greatest of all times.
