suraj
Before the Ireland match today There they were. Lara going into the bar to have a drink with a friend, Sarwan going out to grab some breakfast and Chanderpaul signing a few autographs. Their faces said it all. They are all players without a team. Pained faces for having let the country down, the West Indian players don?t seem to be at ease with themselves. It was meant to be their world cup. It isn?t anymore. It was meant to be their proudest hour. It has turned into a funeral instead. While this is a glimpse of the unsuccessful, the biggest achievers are in the best mood of their lives. As Habibul Bashar walked back from practice and headed straight for me to close off an unfinished interview, his face said it all. Confident and relaxed, his declaration was alarming. ?We are waiting for you to come to Bangladesh with an inexperienced side. If you do, we will hammer you again.? As I mentioned to him that India is planning to take a relatively inexperienced side to Bangladesh or such are the indications, (continuing to treat them like minnows even after losing to them), his face-hardened a bit. ?We don?t mind people treating us like minnows as long as we beat them consistently. It will then be fun you see.? I did my best to provoke him saying India will come hard at you. But little did I know I was talking to a man leading a resurgent team, a team confident of beating the very best on their day. ?I know the Indians will come hard at us. I even know their will be increased pressure at home. People will now expect us to win. But that?s what cricket is all about and we are ready.? ?What about Saurav? What is he up to in Kolkata??, inquired Habibul. When I mentioned that the BCCI is planning to drop some seniors and Saurav may be one of them, he was stunned. ?Are you serious??, was the startled reaction. He was the only Indian who played well against us.? A quick chuckle and then came the 140 mph ace, ?You drop players like Saurav and come to Bangladesh. We will be waiting for you with bated breath.? As I was getting ready to push the Saurav issue even further, Rabid Imam, the Bangladesh media manager informed Habibul that it was time for fielding training. I immediately grabbed the opportunity. Bangladesh, we have all seen, is one of the best fielding sides in this world cup. The key to their success, Habibul tells me is a specialist fielding coach, Salauddin. He has been with the team for a year and a half and is keen and hungry for results. The players too have responded and are enjoying fielding these days. In fact, he was candid in saying, ?You can bat well one day and bowl well the other day but in fielding we will beat the Indians each and every day and in each and every session.? Once the confident Habibul disappeared, I decided I had done enough work for the morning and it was time for lunch. My friend Soutik, here in Barbados representing BBC, and I went to a local restaurant and ordered Chicken/Potato/Roti whatever that is supposed to be. Once our food was ready, we were asked to pay 20BD$ for the Roti John. We have heard of ?John? the name. I have also heard of John as a surname but Roti John was news to us. And they were insistent we call the concoction Roti John. Then came the even more bizarre. Soutik, the traditional greedy Bengali, wanted fries to go with. ?Sir, if you want fries you should have ordered them first thing in the morning. We can?t serve fries like this.? The world may be global, but it is still very different. We may get Roti here but never will you get a Roti John in India. And never will you have to order fries first thing in the morning to get them for lunch http://203.200.89.67/blog.asp?id=3&eid=3&cid=1&pid=544&bid=0 Of course then they lost to Ireland Link to comment

King
Re: We will hammer your inexperienced side- Bashar I don't reckon he will be able to continue as captain for long himself. His batting has been really wanting and as a captain he should score some runs sometimes. I think he is going to be stripped off captaincy shortly. Link to comment

If you do, we will hammer you again.? Bashar has got absoluely nothing to lose and is trying to make as much of the current situation as he can. Look at this way, when India tours Bangladesh and practically destroy them what would the world of cricket think of that? Yeah India beat Bangladesh...Big effing deal. And if Bangladesh beat India Bashar can smile and say "I told you so". Of course we have our own team to blame for this embarassing situation today. xxxx Link to comment
