its a shame that record for highest individual ODI score has gone to a player whose team doesnt even have test status.this is what ODI cricket has come to nowadays
Or is it a good thing that even an non-test playing team can pull this off. This shows that Cricket in Zimbabwe is improving.

well as mr wicket said it came against a team that doesnt deserve test status.highest individual score is a big thing.it should not be as easy as it was.highest score should atleast belong to a test cricketer who has sound technique.this record is as shambolic as SL's highest team score 443 against Holland.Coventry played well but this would not be one of the greatest ODI innings which a world record score should be

Are you familiar with the concept of a one-off? Coventry has played 40 first class games and 58 list A games and has a grand total of 1 ton in each format with fairly mediocre averages in both. Taking one fluke innings like this that's clearly an exception to his standard performance (given his very mediocre records in all forms of the game) and claiming it's a sign of improvement in Zimbabwean cricket overall (which has far bigger issues than just players, given the state of corruption and political instability in the country and the effects on the board which is packed with government officials) is incredibly stupid. This is the sort of logic and the ability to take a one-off occurence totally out of context that had Reetinder Singh Sodhi and Ajit Agarkar billed as potentially brilliant all rounders for India, or Dodda Ganesh and the rest of the 90s medium pace purveyor of four balls brigade billed as potential bowling saviours.

And against a team that doesn't deserve test status.
Team that doesn't have test status vs Team that doesn't deserve test status. That is a fair match. We cannot use that as a reason to discredit his innings. How come nobody was ever able to score 194 against Bangladesh then? Kapil's 175 came against a team that did not have Test status. Would you undervalue that innings?

lol Kapil's knock came in a WC game n wen we were 17/5.it was a brilliant counter attack.n i hear Zim had a pretty good attack in those days n ofcourse pitches were tougher

Yea Anwar was dropped by Sunil Joshi once. He just got lucky. Look at the other scores in his career. I don't think he ever crossed 150 more than the one occasion.
Interestingly only 2 Pakistanis have ever crossed 150. Anwar and Imran Nazir (!!) On a sidenote, 11 Indians have crossed 150

That argument is actually valid because its crap bowling that enables such huge scores. In fact, the bowling from both teams have been really pathetic. Not that Anwar made his score against a very good attack....Kuruvilla, Prasad, Kumble and Joshi do not make a great attack on a dead pitch. But this Bangladeshi attack looks quite hopeless. Still, no one can rob Coventry of his achievement. His name stays on top of that list.....above Anwar.

Why is it relevant at all that Anwar got dropped in that inning? Almost all knocks involve some shots in the air. In some cases there's a fielder on the spot who'll catch em, other times there's a fielder who'll miss em and other times there's nobody there so the ball might race for four or fall safe.

It may be a one off, may be Coventry will not achieve anything else of significance in his career, but he did it. He stayed at the wicket for that time and scored all those runs. Every team, every player gets a shot at a bad bowling line up once in a while, how many manage to do it? As Ludh said, most of them feel content with a hundred, get impatient and get out.

Don't forget Azharuddin was captaining. I watched it live. Only thing Azzu didn't do was ask for an air condition for Saeed Anwar.

Dude, that innings played by Coventry was exceptional. I really dont care what people generally thinks. Bangladesh does have a very weak attack right now, 3 front line pace bowler (Mashrafee, Rubel and Nazmul) and 1 frontline spinner(razzaq) is not playing courtesy injury. I however still think that this attack was in no way worse than an attack compromised of Kuruvilla Prasad and Joshi.....Kumble was an exception and but he was ripped apart by Anwar in that innings...same is the case with Shakib and coventry.... Please give him the credit........It is not like other test playing nation never played ODI against bangladesh but i don see any names there at the top other than coventry's...
