patriot
http://www.cricinfo.com/page2/content/story/406891.html Everyone who has played cricket with Viv Richards, seems to rave about the unmatched fear and awe that they experience playing against him. Never watched him live, since I started watching cricket only in the late 90's - but awe that he commands seems to be of mythological proportions - surely no player since him seems to be as feared by opponents. To the oldies here - Was he really that damn bloody good ????????? Link to comment
vvvslaxman
He was bloody good. The aura he carried was stunning. Girly walk, chewing gum, swatting the ball like fly were a real sighter those days. One of the most significant innings that i can remember was in 1983 series where India and WI just crawled at snail pace almost like 2 runs per over.in the first 3 innings. 4th day was rained out. India almost saved the test by batting till the mandatory powerplay. WI requierd 172 runs in 26 overs. Think about it. WI made 254 in 116 overs in the 1st innings. Now they have to make 172 in 26 overs. Haynes provided a frenetic start alright. But main man who made that chase possible was Richards. Very first ball he faced went for 6. He had that supreme self belief very few people could match. For the next 10 or 15 overs India didn't know what hit them. WI made 173 runs in 25.3 overs Richards making 61 in 36 balls. It is surreal chase even in these days. Think about 25 years back. http://www.cricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/63335.html Link to comment

coffee_rules
Much like Tendulkar, he would convert perfect legitimate good balls to the boundary when he was aggressive. He was weak against spin. Warne would have eaten him alive. Link to comment
Anakin
Not to mention, he enjoyed playing with arguably the best team ever. I'm sure, it's not only him, the opponents feared many of his team mates, and probably more than him. Link to comment

patriot
No' date=' Miandad was better - he averaged moaaarrr.[/quote'] Umm...its not all about averages - It is about dominating attacks - scoring briskly and counter attacking. You won't be able to defend your man statistically EVEN on this. :winky:. Link to comment
Mr. Wicket
I don't think the Outsider was being serious with that comment. You must have been reading too many of the silly season CL posts and gotten them mixed up with some actual sarcasm. :winky: Link to comment

So you are saying S/R does not matter in tests ? Please watch below discussion among 3 maharathis ( starting from 8.10 ) to know what makes Lara standout according to them and why Viv Richards stood out among his peers although he averaged less than Gavaskar, Miandad , Greg Chappell.. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=490978601065903138# 53 ( your man ) vs 60 ( my man ) - That is telling - add to that a lower average. NO argument here. If dominating ( read high S/R ) attacks is not an important criteria than Kallis must be as great a batsman as Ponting for he averages the same. Another statistical blunder - Ganguly's ODI strike rate is closer to 70 actually. Link to comment

According to me and my limited intelligence, SR matters more in ODIs than in tests - and a SR of 55 vs. 59 in tests is much more than off set by a SR of 86 vs. 80 in ODIs. BTW, when is final performer going to improve his average over the last three finals from 1. :hysterical: Link to comment
