Ranji Trophy: Virat Kohli leads Delhi to victory December 04, 2009 21:49 IST Stand-in skipper Virat Kohli [ Images ] led from the front with an unbeaten 88 as Delhi [ Images ] spanked Saurashtra by eight wickets to pocket five points from their Ranji Trophy Super League Group B match at home on Friday. Chasing 160, the hosts cruised to 161 for 2 in 32 overs, with Kohli and Mithun Manhas [ Images ] (23) guiding them to victory. It turned out to be a memorable outing for Kohli, who was asked to lead the side in the absence of regular skipper Aakash Chopra, who missed the match because of his marriage. Earlier, Saurashtra began their second essay on 181 for seven and folded for 214, setting Delhi 160 runs to win the tie. Pawan Suyal (4/41) was the pick of the Delhi bowlers, even though Parwinder Awana (3/48) and Pradeep Sangwan (2/49) were also among the wickets. Delhi's chase faltered early, with opener Aditya Jain (10) edging Sandeep Jobanputra in the ninth over. Next-man-in Kohli and Ankur Julka (33) then took charge, milking the Saurashtra bowlers with consummate ease. The duo had added 78 runs when Ravindra Jadeja [ Images ] caught Julka off his own bowling. But with Manhas joining Kohli in the middle, the visitors did not get another chance to celebrate. Kohli's 86-ball 88 included 12 hits to the fence apart from two sixes. Brief scores: Saurashtra: 328 & 214. Delhi: 383 & 161 for 2. Dinesh Karthik slams 152, TN draw with Orissa Sambalpur: Tamil Nadu skipper Dinesh Karthik slammed a blistering 152 as the visitors gained three points, courtesy their 34-run first innings lead, from their drawn Ranji Trophy Super League Group A match against Orissa on Friday. Orissa had to be satisfied with just a lone point from the stalemate. With no real result in sight, Tamil Nadu's batsmen went for some batting practice and Karthik shone with a 157-ball 152 that had 19 fours and two sixes in it. Anirudha Srikkanth (81), son of former India [ Images ] captain and current chief selector K Srikkanth, and Arun Kartik (19) added 66 runs for the opening pair before Alok Sahoo dismissed the latter. Abhinav Mukund (9) did not last long either but his exit brought in Karthik, who, in Srikkanth's company, went after the Orissa bowlers. Srikkanth looked good for his ton but the youngster fell 19 runs away from the mark. His 93-ball 81 had 12 fours in it. Tamil Nadu were 379 for eight at stumps. For Orissa, Dhiraj Singh claimed three for 122, while Sahoo (2/56) and Rakesh Mohanty (2/79) got two apiece. Brief scores: Tamil Nadu: 361 & 375 for 8. Orissa: 327. Mumbai bag 3 points from draw with Hyderabad Hyderabad: Ambati Rayudu (79) and Abhinav Kumar (49) helped Hyderabad force a draw, but defending champions Mumbai walked away with three points thanks to the massive 255-run first innings lead they had taken in the Ranji Trophy Super League Group A match that concluded on Friday. Overnight 63 for one, Hyderabad ended the final day on 276 for six in reply to Mumbai's mammoth first innings total of 521. Opener Shashank Nag, who was on 22 at the draw of stumps on Thursday, completed his half century and put together a 42-run partnership for the third wicket with Amol Shinde (18). After Shashank became Iqbal Abdullah's first of the three victims on a personal score of 57, Rayudu and Abhinav joined hands to steady the innings, combining for 113 runs. Abhinav's two-hour toil, however, ended in heartbreak as Abhishek Nayar [ Images ] castled him just one run short of his half century. Rayudu, meanwhile, struck 10 fours in his 153-ball knock before being caught by Wasim Jaffer [ Images ] off Abdulla's bowling. Ibrahim Khaleel (1) and Syed Quadri (11) saw through the remainder of the day to help the hosts grab the lone point on offer. Brief Scores: Mumbai: 521 declared Hyderabad: 266 and 276 for six (P Shashank Nag 57, Ambati Rayudu 79, Iqbal Abdulla 3/72). UP, Maharashtra in thrilling draw Riding on brilliant batting displays by Parvinder Singh and Piyush Chawla [ Images ], Uttar Pradesh [ Images ] came close to an improbable victory before falling short by 31 runs as their Ranji Trophy Group B match against Maharashtra ended in a draw on Friday. Resuming at the overnight score of 42 for no loss, UP ended the day on 391 for the loss of seven wickets, falling short of the victory target of 422 by 31 runs. Parvinder and Chawla came together when it seemed all over for UP, struggling at 233-5, but the duo added a quickfire 103 runs in 20.2 overs for the sixth wicket to keep the visitors in the hunt. Parvinder, who had earlier added 67 runs for the fifth wicket with Shivkant Shukla (22), completed a deserving century, before being castled by left-arm tweaker K Adhav for 100. His knock was studded with 13 fours and one six and came off 190 balls. After Parvinder's dismissal, the visitors, who conceded a first innings lead of 84 runs, needed 87 runs in about 16 overs but failed to complete the job and had to be content with one point. Chawla was unbeaten on 82 (101 balls, 4x8, 6x3). Earlier, UP enjoyed a good start as openers Praveen Kumar [ Images ] (42) and Tanmay Srivastava (45) added 89 runs in 18.3 overs. However, once Praveen was dismissed, Srivastava, Suresh Raina [ Images ] (9) and skipper Mohd Kaif (20) followed without much addition to the score, derailing the visitors' chase. Brief scores: Maharashtra 292 & 338/9d Uttar Pradesh 208 & 391/7

Skipper Kohli gifts Delhi their first win Standing up for his team, the young Kohli came up with an unbeaten 88 to lead Delhi to an eight-wicket win against Saurashtra on Friday, reports Anam Arsalan. More... Skipper Kohli gifts Delhi their first win Anam Arsalan, Hindustan Times New Delhi, December 04, 2009 First Published: 23:31 IST(4/12/2009) Last Updated: 23:32 IST(4/12/2009) Virat Kohli couldn’t have chosen a better venue to start his captaincy than the historic Roshanara ground. It was here that the legendary Sir Jack Hobbs had turned out for a match in 1930. Standing up for his team, the young Kohli came up with an unbeaten 88 to lead Delhi to an eight-wicket win against Saurashtra on Friday. Looking down the barrel after the innings defeat to Uttar Pradesh, the 2007-08 champions now seem to be doing fine in this Ranji season. Needing just three wickets to end Saurashtra’s second innings, the Delhi bowlers got to work right away. A rising delivery from Parvinder Awana took Sandip Maniar by surprise and the top edge landed in Kohli’s hands at gully. Pawan Suyal took over and consumed Balkrishna Jadeja and Jayesh Odedra in the space of three deliveries and the innings folded up at 214. In the 69 minutes Saurashtra spent at the wicket this morning, the batsmen could add a mere 33 runs to the overnight 181. Needing 160 for an outright win, Delhi accomplished the job with relative ease with Kohli and Mithun Manhas (23) remaining unbeaten. Warhorse Sandeep Jobanputra raised visions of a fightback by foxing Aditya Jain (10). An away-moving delivery clipped the opener’s bat and wicketkeeper Sagar Jogiyani did the rest. Controversy raised its head when Jobanputra appeared to have run out Ankur Julka at the non-striker’s end. It was a firm hit off Kohli’s bat and the ball hit the stumps after brushing Jobanputra’s palm. The benefit of doubt went to Julka as the umpires were uncertain. Later, umpires’ coach, S.K. Bansal, confirmed that Julka had made his ground. The opener finally fell to Ravindra Jadeja for 33. Kohli and Manhas then took over and ensured there no twists in the plot. “It feels good when you win your first game as captain and also get to contribute,” said an elated Kohli. Saurashtra skipper Jaydev Shah termed the 141-run stand between Bisht and Pradeep Sangwan as the “turning point”. With nine points from four matches, Delhi are safely placed in the Elite pool table — a massive swing after being above bottom-placed Maharashtra at the start of this leg. They now take on Maharashtra from Tuesday at this venue and a win will leave them fancying their chances of being among the top three of Group B. Coach Vijay Dahiya too was a happy man. “A win against a team like Saurashtra has given us confidence and we’ll look to do better from here.” Praising Kohli’s knock, he said, “He is a fine batsman and his captainship is an addition.”

Chawla, Parvinder almost pull it off for UP Chasing 423 for victory, Uttar Pradesh came close to knocking off the winning runs on Friday after Parvinder Singh hit a century and Piyush Chawla (unbeaten 82) fought till the end to take visitors beyond the finish line, reports Bivabasu Kumar. More... Chawla, Parvinder almost pull it off for UP Bivabasu Kumar, Hindustan Times Pune, December 04, 2009 First Published: 23:34 IST(4/12/2009) Last Updated: 23:35 IST(4/12/2009) Chasing 423 for victory, Uttar Pradesh came close to knocking off the winning runs on Friday after Parvinder Singh hit a century and Piyush Chawla (unbeaten 82) fought till the end to take visitors beyond the finish line. Finishing at 391 for 7, UP denied Maharashtra their first win of the season, but could not prevent the hosts from taking three points for their first innings lead. Maharashtra got breakthroughs at regular intervals but paid the price for dropped catches and fielding lapses. Going into the final day, the hosts held the upper hand with a big total at their disposal. Commencing at 41 without loss, UP played to win and despite losing wickets, threatened to pull off a winning act. Parvinder was once again UP’s mainstay. Treading with caution, he launched the big hits whenever opportunity presented itself. His 258-min stay at the crease not only stabilised the side after skipper Mohammed Kaif’s (20) exit after lunch, it also laid the foundation for the run chase. Making the most of the two lives, the middle-order bat stitched a 98-run stand with Chawla. The chase gathered momentum after tea with the duo dealing in boundaries. Chawla heaved Kiran Adhav over long off for a huge six and deftly tapped the ball past first slip several times for boundaries. The leggie, who was put down by Ganesh Gaikwad, also played the sweep to perfection. Adhav broke the partnership when he breached Parvinder’s defence with one that turned sharply. Chawla kept pushing for a win but didn’t find support from the other end. It was an improved performance from Maharashtra and the three points will help them prevent relegation from the Super League. Comprising a bunch of youngsters (the average age is 21), Maharashtra were undone by inexperience.

Mumbai fail to force win Defending champions Mumbai were on the verge of an outright win for the second match in a row but once again failed to grab five full points, reports HT Correspondent. More... Mumbai fail to force win HT Correspondent, Hindustan Times Hyderabad, December 04, 2009 First Published: 23:36 IST(4/12/2009) Last Updated: 23:37 IST(4/12/2009) Defending champions Mumbai were on the verge of an outright win for the second match in a row but once again failed to grab five full points. While Railways’ Murali Kartik and M Suresh frustrated them in the last match, Hyderabad’s Ambati Rayudu and Shahank Nag thwarted them on Friday. Mumbai had to settle for three points. The holders now have 15 points from five games and are currently in third position in Group A behind Tamil Nadu and Punjab. The top three teams from each group qualify for the quarterfinals and Mumbai have a five-point cushion over fourth-placed Railways with two more games to go. Resuming at 63 for one, Hyderabad needed to bat out the day to save the match and given the host’s batting record this season, Mumbai would have surely fancied their chances. But Sahil Kukreja gave Shashank Nag a life when he dropped him off Ajit Agarkar. Scores: Hyderabad 266 & 276 for 6 (A Rayudu 79, PS Nag 57; I Abdulla 3-72) drew with Mumbai 521-2.

Kohli retained Delhi captain even as Chopra returns Virat Kohli has been retained as captain for Delhi’s next match against Maharashtra, starting on December 8. More... Kohli handed reins of Delhi Ranji team HT Correspondent, Hindustan Times New Delhi, December 06, 2009 First Published: 01:29 IST(6/12/2009) Last Updated: 01:31 IST(6/12/2009) Virat Kohli has been retained as captain for Delhi’s next match against Maharashtra, starting on December 8. The decision, said DDCA selection committee chairman Chetan Chauhan, is the outcome of Kohli’s fine leadership in the last match, and the need to groom a youngster for the future. The move becomes significant given that Aakash Chopra, the regular Delhi skipper this season, is available for the match. He missed the last match against Saurashtra because of his wedding on December 2. “This is a very crucial match for us in terms of making it to the knockout stage. We need someone who’s high on confidence to lead the side in this game. Aakash hasn’t been amongst runs this season and has just got married. So we are trying to take pressure off him so that he can come up with big scores,” explained Chauhan. In five innings this season Chopra has managed 55 runs with a highest of 22. Kohli, however, will not be available for Delhi's last match in the league phase, against Bengal, as he will be away on national duty in the ODIs against Sri Lanka. Squad: Virat Kohli (Captain), Aakash Chopra, Ankur Julka, Mithun Manhas, Rajat Bhatia, Yogesh Nagar, Puneet Bisht, Sumit Narwal, Pradeep Sangwan, Parvinder Awana, Pawan Suyal, Vikas Mishra, Gaurav Chhabra, Aditya Jain, Abhishek Kapoor.
