Bit inconsistant to be called the best test batsman IMO, and should average over 50(which hopefully he will by the time he retires) but to me the best bad ptich and the best bad situation batsman for India just like Dravid was at his peak BTW this also begs the question. Are people who stand up in crisis more important than people who actually ensure that there is no crisis in the first place?

Consistently winning matches for us , you just cant ignore that anymore what ever the avgs suggest . I cant think of one player in the history of the game whos bailed out his team as often as laxman has done . Hes doing it every series now , its not even a joke .

But there are other players like Sachin, Sehwag and Gambhir who have consistantly been putting the team in such a situtation that they are never in a crisis to begin with and the team wins the match easily. But because the win looks easy (and not a fight back from precarious situation which is more entertaining) thats doesnt mean you discount all those innings. When Sehwag gets going there is no question of bailing out the team as we will be in a good position to begin with. Similarly look at Gambhir and Sachin's consistancy in series over series. We hardly get into difficult situatios when both of them are in the team. and when all of them fail, we have the superman from Hyderabad to bail us out of any impossible situation. Dravid too seems to be coming back into form. All in all, I am glad that they are all playing for my team.

Sachin and Dravid will look a little uncomfortable initially but you can count on them to grit it out on most occasions but their strike rates will tell you how difficult the pitch is. Overall I would say Dravid is the most reliable since he has the technique and temperament to leave good balls. Sachin tends to reach for the ball which often leads to him nicking one to slips else technically he is as good as Dravid. Sehwag and Laxman, well they bat the way they bat irrespective of the pitch or the ball.

He is underrated these days given how good our batting line-up is but when the Big 3 retire we will realise how good and how important he is for India. He is a gutsy player capable of toughing it out on bowler friendly pitches. I was hugely impressed by his application in South Africa.
