Israel: No longer a "Strong" state

Israel could release 980 Palestinians to free soldier, prosecutors say Israel could release 980 Palestinian prisoners in a possible deal to win the freedom of an Israeli soldier held captive by Hamas for three years, prosecutors disclosed Sunday. The number from Israel's State Prosecutor's Office is the first official estimate of how many Palestinians could be freed in exchange for Cpl. Gilad Shalit, who was captured in a 2006 Hamas raid near the Israel-Gaza border. Prosecutors disclosed the number in response to demands, made by the families of Israelis killed by Palestinians, that the government disclose the terms of a potential deal with Hamas. In papers filed with Israel's high court, the prosecutor's office said the government is considering an initial release of 450 prisoners in the first phase of a deal, with another 530 prisoners slated to be freed in a second phase. No prisoner names were released with the numbers. Relatives of Israelis slain by Palestinians have petitioned the court to force the government to release more information about the details of a possible exchange. Many of them have been vocal opponents of plans to release prisoners they believe may commit acts of violence again. Israel and Hamas have been negotiating Shalit's release through third-party mediators from Egypt and Germany, but talks have started and stalled numerous times. Shalit's freedom has become a condition for the Israelis to consider ending a blockade that has economically wounded the Palestinian territory of Gaza. Speculation about a possible deal emerged last week after Israeli President Shimon Peres met with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Cairo, Egypt, and hinted that the talks could be at a critical juncture. But Israel's government is obligated to publicly announce the list of any prisoners to be released and allow 48 hours for objections before a deal can take place. Shalit was 19 when he was captured on June 25, 2006, by Palestinian militants from Gaza, including those from Hamas, the Palestinian faction that controls the territory. Israel immediately launched a military incursion into Gaza to rescue Shalit, but failed. In October, Hamas gave Israel a minute-long "proof of life" tape of the captured soldier in return for the release of 20 female prisoners. The video showed Shalit sitting in a chair, reading a newspaper dated September 14, 2009, and saying he was in good health. http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/meast/11/29/israel.captured.soldier/index.html

Its not just any prisoners of course. Marwan Barghouti might be one of them, the only guy who can unite Hamas and Fatah. Crucially for Israel he wants to negotiate a two state deal and is someone Palestinians will actually follow. This exchange dosent make them less than strong- it means theyre being sensible. No one doubts the 'strength' America has given Israel.

It is amazing that this middle east problem has still not been resolved. Shame on the UN and all it's member countries for not even having a clue on how to solve this. Endless summits, endless accords, even noble peace prizes awarded, yet no conclusion in sight.

What do you suggest be done' date=' [u']that can actually be done ?
1. Get rid of Hamas and all other terrorist outfits in west bank and gaza 2. Deploy a temporary multi-national force in the region ASAP which I know Israeli won't agree to, but the UN can do it on the Palestinian side anyways. 3. Establish a Palestinian country with compromise from both sides, this would be the tricky part. Since Israel is an established country, IMO, Palestinians should accept whatever they can get, or else keep rotting forever. 4. Provide Aid to Palestine to create jobs and bring their economy to an acceptable level so that terrorism is not really the only option for the young generation.

The only way this dispute can be settled now is by dividing Israel-Palestine into two proper democratic nations. I personally want both Israelites and Palestine people to live as brothers and sisters like we do in all secular nations. But both Israel and Palestine are too much extremist countries. The Israelites are too adamant on them ruling all over Israel and Palestine terming themselves as the "choosen ones" (which I never understand). On the other hand, Palestine people (especially terrorist groups like Hamas) are too adamant and are not ready to accept Israel as a country which is another BS as Israel has been there for long enough and hence, has to be there. If they cannot live in cooperation, then they should divide it into two democratic nations and live independently. Before that, Israel has to stop all the settlements on the West Bank and Hamas has to be ended completely. I dont know much in details about the conflict but I dont understand why this cannot be solved peacefully if both the Israelites and Palestinians have the determination and will to do so.

I agree with these points too. There should also be a multi-nation / world / UN army in the region immediately after separation so that the world can also check that neither the Palestinians nor the Israelites do anything wrong to hinder the progress of a proper democracy on both sides.

why do YOU guys care so much abt what's happening in Palestine? is it coz they're muslim too? if that's the case then why do you guys never talk about darfur?
Selective morality at work. Nobody gives a shyt about Bosnia, Sudan, Chechnya but the excuses about Israel are endless. Pathetic
Thats not really true. The Palestine conflict gets the highest profile because of its nature- Jews, the history, not to mention the fact that its been going on for 60 years. But there is ALOT of work that goes into helping muslims in other striken parts like Chchenya and Darfur

Yeah on paper thats fantastic. Nothing ever seems to sink in with these guys though. Terrorism is only an option because of the economic blockade and because theyve been under illegal occupation for so long. Its only the nutjobs (like Ahmadenijad) who deny Israels right to exsit now, even Hamas for all their rhetoric managed to keep a ceasefire for a reasonbale length of time last year and are willing to negotiate. Anyone remotely sensible knows that a compromise and the two state solution is the only option.

Come on Iran. Do it fast please.
Wow are you bothered about Palestinians so much? You are a pakistani! You have no common culture, language etc with them at all. You have nothing in common with them whats so ever. Don't eat same food, listen to same music and they are miles away from pakistan. Why you so bothered?

There has been a lot of negative publicity surrounding Israel, especially since they announced that they're going to continue the settlement expansion in the West Bank, in an open rebuke to President Obama's call for Israel to end all settlements. They probably want to generate some goodwill, hence this prisoner release decision.
