Even they want a state for themselves. Whereever there is not much growth, the people get disgruntled. Good for governance in the end, I think. More the merrier.
beetle Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 India probably needs another 15 more states before some of these gargantuan states can be ruled properly and effectively. UP itself has a population two thirds the size of the entire United States and is governed as one state. The development index in all things shot up once Uttaranchal was created. UP needs to be cut down in at least 4 more states. Same is the case with AP - another huge state. Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Bihar and the list goes on. With India's population explosion these states have become management nightmares for the rare politician which does want to do some good. Agree completely.Most states that have been divided have done better after the split.

triam Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 For the maturity level of Indian democracy, it is better to remove elected State government, and instead delegate senior IAS officers to each state as the administrative leader, as it is States have little autonomy in India and even then they manage to screw it up. So remove the autonomy of the states and enforce policies top down. The national political leadership is a little better than the State leaderships (generally there may be few exceptions), maturity wise and policy making wise. So get rid of state governments for a while now, all it serves is create local fiefdoms for all the 2 bit leaders.

In India thats just a mirage, which leader has been thrown out for good because he/she was horrible? they usually come back in 5 years back to the same power they were abusing before.

In UP, Kalyan and Rajnath Singh come to mind. In Bihar, Laloo is pretty much a goner. Devi Lal in Harayana.

I believe that a federal system of governance with no state government is the way to go for India. Otherwise all the state legislators think that they are little kings and the goondagiri just continues.

You knwo power can corrupt even a honest IAS officer. what we need is accountability to IAS officer. Everything should be incentivised. The better managesd states should get more funds from center. Better States means better country. btw, because of the $**** going on in AP, I had to cancel my trip to Tirupathi. now I can't go for another year. DAmm them.

For a person who is actually living in India and knows the reality of IAS officers, the suggestion to give complete power to IAS officers sounds too funny. :hysterical: Does any of you know the reality of IAS officers in present-day India. I agree that there are a few IAS officers who are honest to their work but believe me the honest IAS officers are nearly as much rare as honest politicians. Both are rare species in India. Even the honest IAS officers get corrupted in India and thats a fact which people who live in India and are somehow associated with the administration know. :(( IAS officers all over India are mostly hand in hand with the politicians and they are some of the most corrupt people in India too. Thats a fact because I have seen enough of them to be sure about it. :(( Even the honest IAS officers are transferred by politicians to rural areas and so they also dont raise their voice. And there have been several scandals in the past with the civil services examinations facing allegations of making students pass for money. So, these are not the same IAS officers too. The whole system has become corrupt today but giving full power to the IAS officers means doom for the Indian masses for sure. As beetle mentioned above, we are at least able to kick out the state leaders now but a corrupt IAS officer would be a big pain in the @ss. Without division of states and the administration in states it would become even more difficult to do equal development in India. It is not any good right now and several parts of India have been neglected already in the last six decades which resulted in all the internal problems we are facing today but without states fighting for their own rights equal development would be even worse. Nothing is perfect but our present system of government is still the best possible. The only thing we can do good is that we can hope that some honest leaders someday rule all over India who are really interested in India's development instead of filling up their own pockets.

I mentioned only Gorkhaland but manhy other people are asking for their own states. It is really becoming a joke now. :((

Second of all, they are glorified admins not really have unlimited powers, still answerable to the elected representatives in the federal government.

In a country likes ours we have cultural differences every 100 miles. Within Bihar itself a case can be made that 3 new states can be carved out - Magadha, Vaishali & Mithila. The supporters of these states can make the base based on: a) All the three regions have distinct dialect difference. b) Population in each region is much for Bihar to Administer it(each region would have more than 15-20 million folks easy). c) All the three regions have had great history and have been their own self-administered state. And this is when a Jharkhand has already been carved out of Bihar. Of course the real reason would be some MLA who now thinks it is right to become CM and hence will start agitation invoking Magadha pride, or Mithila as the case maybe. xxx

With the status of Hyderabad uncertain and if the Hyderabadis get a choice to vote what they want they will probably vote for UT which will mean Telengana is left with Tirupati as its largest city.
