Thrilling batsman with the ability to build an innings and tear apart a bowling attack in an hour, brilliant quick bowler who formed one of the great new ball combinations, sharp fielder and legendary for his wit and laid-back approach to the game. He's one player I imagine would be a huge favourite in any format or era of the game. Didn't know him until now. Are there any videos of his?

Learned how to cook. Realized I was good at it and enjoyed it, kept exploring and learning. As far as non-Indian, was pretty easy as I've always liked a lot of Chinese, Northern Thai, French and Italian food and wanted to learn how to work in those cuisines after I had the basics down. Also have done some culinary training on the side (as a hobby), and learned a lot of other techniques/recipes from friends in the International Food & Wine society. As far as learning other cuisines, it's not particularly hard. IMO the key is to have the basic techniques down - if you've mastered the major cooking techniques (saute, fry, roast/grill, bake, braise, sauce, boil/blanche, etc) - then it's relatively easy to apply them to different cuisines/dishes once you work out the new ingredients/seasonings. Went to a couple of major wine regions in California and Australia on a couple of trips a few years back. Got into the hobby there. There are experts who pull stuff out of their asses, but there are also plenty of writers who really know what they're talking about. (Eric Asimov in the NYT is one of them, check out his columns sometime.) Re. your second question, most flavours fall into categories (sweet/salty/bitter/sour/savoury). Of course, then you also have other 'sensations' such as dryness, heat, etc, which complicates the Q even more. A night in Chicago or NYC? Chicago. Right more Q's... Give us two Sal fests then- a rock/metal one, and a 'other' one :P The last live music gig you went to? The best bands youve seen live? Rock/metal one is up there. Other, given that it's classical, is a bit harder to pick out (because of the sheer number of different combinations of orchestras, conductors and particular soloists for concertos). But ideally I'd like to see Carlos Kleiber raised from the dead to conduct the Berlin Phil. Orchestra through all of Beethoven's symphonies, Mozart's 39th-41st and his violin concertos, and Dvorak's 9th. Last live music gig - NY Philharmonic performing Beethoven's 3rd. Best bands seen live: Black Sabbath, Slayer, Judas Priest. More cricket following now.

Same between Miller and Kapil. I'd put them equal, but would rather watch a great swing bowler (rather than Miller, who was more about pace and hitting the deck/bouncing batsmen regularly) to partner McGrath or Lindwall. mooarr on cricket your views on umpiring in sharjah? should cricket return to gulf? your views on shakoor rana vs mike gatting? kemar roach,good enough? sourav ganguly or rahul dravid...the more talented one? mohammad azharuddin a batting genius? Umpiring in Sharjah was sometimes rough, but generally wasn't as bad as it was made out to be (given that umpiring in many other places was also quite crap). Cricket shouldn't return to the gulf. There isn't the infrastructure or interest for it to be long-term, and the risks of more match fixing scandals outweigh any possible benefits. Shakoor Rana is an assh0le and if Gatting was to get an MBE for his role that series (wouldn't be undeserved, certainly if Collingwood can get an MBE for scoring a few at the Oval...) I would not complain. No comment on Roach. Have not seen enough. But he does seem to at least be among the better WI prospects. Ganguly was more talented than Dravid. Had a natural flair, timing and ability to hit big as well as some handy bowling skills. If he did as much with his talent as Dravid did with his, he would have been a great. Azhar was a genius. Flawed genius though, but genius all the same. A cricketing one- Your answer to Mumbai cricket Q above was pretty insightful...What does India need to do/change to improve its general domestic cricket structure? Particularly so that players coming out are better equipped for international cricket. Cut down on # of domestic teams, raise the general quality level of domestic teams and cricket. Have more A-team tours, youth tours abroad and let players have exposure to conditions in Australia, England, NZ and South Africa before they hit the top level. Encourage youngsters to also try and play more summer cricket in the UK leagues or county circuit. And make domestic cricket less about chance and politics. Ensure selectors ARE there for most games, not just following the knockout stages of a Ranji. Improve umpiring domestically (improve pay, create incentives, spend more on infrastructure and help them with technology) as well so a young kid with a lot of talent doesn't suddenly get cut off with a couple of bad decisions getting out in 30s and 40s unfairly - with said errors never being noticed because it's only a Ranji/Duleep game. [And a note to flamy; yes, Saravana Bhavan has bisibelebhaat. How many ****ing times have I told you to get into NYC?]
