Had to use Hiren's Boot CD with Mini Windows XP and backed up whatever I needed to and then just wiped
ViruRulez
I'm too used to windows and the applications get a firewall and an antivirus and block the unnecessary applications etc. from installing. If you want to go for a free one, I would advise you to download comodo av + firewall .. I have used it and can assure you that it is more useful than many paid a/v if you use it properly .. use the a/v + firewall from comodo and not only the a/v or firewall.. it makes your computer at least 99% safe I would say .. secondly dont install unnecessary applications as they also contain malware .. be wise while surfing the net and dont fall into the trap of malware spreading websites and applications
Sachinism
I might go for AVG, Malware Bytes and Spybot Search & Destroy used them before and they did a good job

ViruRulez
I might go for AVG' date=' Malware Bytes and Spybot Search & Destroy used them before and they did a good job[/quote'] yup that is also good.. AVG is good but gives a lot of false alerts .. I also keep Malware byte but MB and SSD do not give live protection.. anyways for maximum protection it is always advisable to for a firewall too .. install a firewall too if you face these virus and security problems frequently
Sachinism
^^ Nah not really. I probably do, but don't know. Been using comp without AV and firewalls for the last year :nervous:
maggot_brain
I hope you're all using Firefox as a web browser and not Internet Explorer. Activex is a one way ticket to virus infections. I'd also get the Hosts file from here: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm That will block known adware, malware and general advertising servers. If you must use Windows I'd advise you to ditch XP, Vista and 7 are much more secure. Get Windows 7 if you can. If you want any help in "getting" Windows 7 if you know what I mean then PM me. If you're using a decent hardware router there's no real need for firewall software on your PC. If you're directly connecting to a modem of some kind then you do need a firewall. The most frequent way to get viruses is via porn and warez sites, so stay away from them. Also watch out for 'rogue' anti-virus sites which claim you have a virus and need to install their software to get rid of it.

Obviously I didn't install it but I couldn't close the page and then the comp just went. I might get Windows 7. Better to do it now then after when my comp is back in proper use

Activex doesn't run in Firefox unless you install an out of date plugin that is only compatible up to FF 1.5. Activex is basically a Windows-only, Internet Explorer-only technology. Well, there you go then, says it all really.
