Ram Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 These days, Indians are generally cast in these nerdy/intellectual in most Hollywood movies. 2012 had an Indian scientist (albeit, whose role was portrayed VERY badly by the chosen actor) at the forefront of a discovery major climate shift. Avatar too has a Indian as one of the leading scientists of the whole Pandora program. Its good that we're being stereotyped in such roles. I think the whole IT thingy has had a huge role in the changing the image of the Indians in general. Though it might sound trivial at this moment, the importance of having a good 'image' cannot be stressed enough. If you're an Indian citizen looking to travel abroad, you'll find it easier than ever before to get your visas (Recently, there has been a big controversy in the UK over a big proportion of Pakistanis having their visas applications being rejected by the British High Commission. Its quite clear the 9/11 and the events that have happened since then has had a huge negative impact on the outlook of the world towards Pakistan and Pakistanis...). If you're an Indian company looking to either invest abroad or attract foreign investments, that will be easier than ever before. If you're Indian research/academic institution trying to engage in knowledge/people transfer, that will be easier too. Aside from the fact that as a nation, we have shown tremendous restraint in the face of continued state sponsored terrorism, restrained from engaging in the spread of dangerous weapons (our nuclear/chemical/biological weapons non-proliferation record is impeccable..) and have experienced tremendous progress in the field of IT, I think we owe much gratitude to Gandhi. His legacy in promoting peace and harmony is matched by no one apart from maybe Martin Luther King. Some Indians lose no opportunity in knocking down his role in Indian history, but the debt of gratitude we owe cannot be described in words.

Its also good for Indian-American/British actors in the last few years in terms of roles they get. Kal penn has played a Indian doctor/med student(house, harold and kumar), a terrorist (24). Sendhil in heroes, Navid in Lost, Anil kapoor in 24, Danny pudi in Community, Asif ansari in Parks and recreation, that office chick...

Actually, that reminds me of an Amitabh Bachchan interview from a long time back - maybe some 15 years. He was asked why he does not accept any Hollywood roles - he had been offered some. He explained in a very articulate way that the roles he had been offered had nothing to do acting wise except stand in some grocery store etc. etc. and was very clear that an Indian would never be accepted in a lead role in mainstream Hollywood till the Indian community became an integral part of the American social structure. It still hasn't got to the level where an Indian actor would be offered a Forrest Gump kind of role, but things are changing for sure. It was a very astute observation by him, IMO.

Two roles that come in my mind are from Kabhi alvida na kehna and Jhoom barabar Jhoom. But I am so glad he did Paa and proved his worthiness all over again (have only watched half of it so far and it looks pretty ****ing awesome).
