Ranchi (born and brought up there) will always have fond memories of the shyamali colony where I grew up...extremely clean and excellent place those days...as for the city not much to say....a typical small town dirty and chaotic. Varanasi(very briefly..2-3 months)-I spent a couple of months at the BHU campus.It is really an oasis in the middle of the mayhem that is Varanasi.The food is awesome but city is absolutely chaotic and dirty. Bangalore-close to 5 years-I love the place despite the hellish traffic....great pubs,restaurants and places to hang out...great weather and a lively cosmopolitan crowd Boulder,CO-Beautiful city...home to colorado state univ and close to the Rocky Mountains,Colorado springs and Aspen. Somerset,NJ- Expensive as hell and too much traffic...the fall was beautiful though! Cincinnati,OH-Great place..has a feel of a big city and a laid back town at the same time. Will always have a soft corner for Bangalore!

CC1981 Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 Kolkata- dirty, super-congested, super-polluted (lung-cancer city ffs!) but really vibrant and alive cultrually. If culture is your thing, Kolkata is the place to be. Delhi - much better with congestion but i don't remember much of Delhi- was 5 yrs old when we left Delhi. All i remember disliking is the 'loo' winds...its like being stuck inside an oven ! Rome- very big, beautiful & culturally vibrant. Traffic is a total mess like India though. Its pretty much 'European Kolkata' in feel, culture and congestion Milan- blander than Rome in every which aspect, except its not too far from the Alps and retreats to the alp chateaus are a common weekend passtime for many. Zurich- spotless, picturesque and everything runs to clockwork precision...but culturally and atmosphere-wise, its lacking, unless you are into mountaineering. Manchester- total sh!thole. Gungy factories, gungy streets, depressing climate, depressing look & feel to the city. Maybe i was closer to blackpool (total butt-hole of Europe AFAIAC) but i was seriously not impressed with Manchester. Doha- lil small-ish but super-rich arab town. Plenty of cultural & sports opportunities and Indian cultural scene there is very vibrant. Excellent roads/transportation system though i think to most non-arabs, mega-roundabouts are scary at first. Extremely multicultural city ( and qatar in general) - the expats outnumber locals by 2:1 almost. Quite good example of a multicultural muslim country & unlike Saudi, its pretty liberal too. ( Bahrain,UAE & Oman are the only other places in middle-east like qatar). Dukhan - a very small oil-town where the lowliest of income bracket is 2000 bucks/month. its right on the edge of the oil field, giving itself a bit of a 'frontier town' feel but the utter lack of poverty and family oriented settlement is quite rustic/rural in its feel but with modernism blended in. Kingston - Queen's university apart, only thing Kingston is known for is its prisons and retirement homes.Total hick-town. But the student culture is awesome and there are a lot of wrecks submerged around the thousand islands chain not too far from K-town. If you are into snorkelling/scuba diving, its a pretty grand place. Winters are bitterly cold with super-cold air blowing in from lake Ontario. Ottawa- picturesque town but totally not my kinda place- there is a very obvious feel of 'beurocracy' in Ottawa, the city demographics is on the older side ( i thikn the average age of ottawans are in their 40s) and it doesnt have much to offer once you finish touring the museums. Horrible weather really - everything just ices over in the winter and they don't bother de-icing the sidewalks (road de-icing is pretty good & dilligent though). Since its a slightly hilly town, its a serious nuisance trying to walk up/down the iced over walkways in winter. Summers are almost Delhi hot with loo winds blowing in. Vancouver- superb city, superb nightlife & a very young, liberal and vibrant population. Not a cultural powerhouse like Toronto or Montreal but its got sufficient culture, especially of the Indian variety. Its one of the most multicultural cities in the world ( less than 50% white people, 2nd largest Chinatown outside of China, almost half a million desis, huge iranian & slavic communities with significant presence from the caribbean, africa & latin America ( very few mexicans though- latinos here are all invariably brazilian/peruvian/colombian etc). Excellent public transportation & very scenic city. Only drawbacks to Vancouver are its 'England winters' of depressing grey & rain all the time and that job market in vancouver is deflated ( low wage city) because of continuous pressure from migrations from rest of Canada.

Holysmoke Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 Urbana Champaign, IL - studied there for a year. a quiet little university town, population 100,000. again, full of desis. there is plenty to do even though it is situated in the corn fields of illinois. night life is pretty quiet, but the busy student existence is an experience i will never forget. :hysterical: Nothing to do there except the night-life all work and no play :thumbs_down: cities ive lived in. Mumbai - No explanation needed. Urbana Champaign -> more like a big village with an unbelievably big University.

The place where i live now , i dont consider living.. Just like an extended stay to do a degree... @CC I can get Vancouver and Ottawa , coz you are living now in Canada.. But , Milan, Zurich , Rome , Manchester , Doha !! Thats pretty impressive !

Dad used to work at first as an EIL guy who roamed the world...then he worked as an ONGC guy who roamed the world (he is a process & production design engineer...ask around Trombay high..his name is known there)..then he worked with BP and roamed the world...after that, he worked with QP (Qatar Petroleum) until recently ( he is out of work currently). Since he was process & design engineer for oil companies, whenever stuff broke down or stuff needed to be upgraded, he'd always head over to Europe for 9months-2 yrs, overseeing the deal and contributing to the design according to his parent comapnie's specs. Whenever he went for more than 3 months, he took me & mom (and later, brother) with him and thats why i ended up at so many different places. Most of my travelling is done before 2002. Since 2002, i've been in Vancouver.

I mean , by the time you got the hang of one city , it seems as though you were out of it !
