vvvslaxman
Equal. In terms of grit and determination first line up takes the cake. In terms of flair second one takes the cake. I remember how Australia conceded huge leads in each of the 3 tests in SL and came back to win 3-0. Link to comment
Temujin Khaghan
on what kind of a pitch? on a pacy one with bounce or on a slow and low turner? this is da best. these guys will own any bowling team in the world. salman butt mohammed hafeez taufeeq umar imran nazir faisal iqbal fawad alam yasir hameed sarfraz ahmed Link to comment
The Outsider
Well, the fact is that neither of the line ups really played together for a long time. I think all 7 players from either line ups featuring in the same test would not have happened more than 15 times - not enough to make a hard performance based comparison. Link to comment
The Outsider
Just 13 tests together for the Aussies : http://stats.cricinfo.com/ci/engine/player/6513.html?class=1;filter=advanced;orderby=default;player_involve=1795;player_involve=1985;player_involve=2071;player_involve=2119;player_involve=2230;player_involve=4176;player_involve_type=all;template=results;type=batting and just 4 for the Indian line up : http://stats.cricinfo.com/ci/engine/player/28763.html?class=1;filter=advanced;orderby=default;player_involve=1934;player_involve=2024;player_involve=2281;player_involve=3317;player_involve=7593;player_involve=7781;player_involve_type=all;template=results;type=batting Hardly a sample to make a meaningful comparison. Ram
I think I will take the Aussie line-up. I am still unsure over a couple of batsmen in the Indian seven, as it were. Gautam is effectively in his 3rd international season as a test match batsmen. While it has been 3 outstanding seasons, I reckon we still havent seen enough of him (time-wise) to start bracketing him amongst the greats. Not that I think or wish this would happen, but he could yet easily lose form/confidence which could send his test career in the downward spiral. Two years from now, we could easily talk of Gautam as 'Wasted Talent..' Ganguly is a fine player, but has significant short-comings in his technique, especially in away conditions and quite frankly, it shows in his record. He resurrection of his test career was stuff of legends, but quite frankly, I'd be surprised if even he himself expected it to happen. After his glorious start to test career, his average was generally on the downward spiral, right until his last 2 international seasons (2007/08). And, there was moments in his test career when he looked absolutely incapable of even putting bat to ball, struggling to get the ball off the square even against visiting Zimbabwean sides. spectre
Both are almost the same, but Indian lineup is a little better due to SEHWAG the impact he makes is parellel to none Link to comment
punjabi_khota
In an one on one comparison, only Gilchrist and maybe Ponting are better. Link to comment
vvvslaxman
Both are almost the same, but Indian lineup is a little better due to SEHWAG the impact he makes is parellel to none Gilly can match him. He has produced some match winning innings out of nowhere. None better than the chase he orchestrated along with Langer against Pakistan. Link to comment
graphic23
In an one on one comparison' date=' only Gilchrist and maybe Ponting are better.[/quote'] I'll disagree on the latter part. I think Dravid is a better test player than Ponting. But thats not the point of this thread, so I shall leave. Link to comment
The Outsider
In an one on one comparison' date=' only Gilchrist and maybe Ponting are better.[/quote'] Off topic, but the order in which the line ups are written were not the players' preferred batting positions. S Waugh used to bat at 5 for the most part and I would definitely pick him over Laxman or Ganguly, as big a Laxman fan that I am. Martyn and Ganguly is not a straightforward choice either. That's the reason I mentioned earlier that unless the aim is to boil the thread down to head to head comparisons, it's pretty pointless because the mentioned players hardly ever played together as a batting unit. gult
Saw the poll and voted without even looking at the thread. I thought you were comparing current set of players, LOL! It's not easy to pick, but I would go with 1 since they have more winner/killer attitude Link to comment

Rajan
In Australia: Aussies would fare better. In Indian piches : Most definitely Indian batsmen would fare far better..., just look at Gilchrist,Ponting,Langer and Waugh junior stats in india.. Link to comment

ViruRulez
The second one... at first looking at the poll I thought it must be a joke thread mentioning present Aus top 7 and India top 7 which is no comparision .. but it is the Waugh Era and that was also great but the present India lineup is a lot better .. the only weakling is UV and you hae replaced him with Dada too so that is perfect and perhaps one of the best ever lineups in the history of test cricket Link to comment
