If you want to see passion and aggression (of the physical kind) in the sport then you could watch boxing or wrestling. Or any of those other full contact sports. Dont get me wrong. I am not saying people should not celebrate or enjoy or disagree or even stare the others down. What can be cool to an Australian may not be cool to an Indian and vice versa. That is why there are rules and there is a spirit to the noble game. What Johnson did there was what a loser would do. If only all angry fast bowlers were allowed to vent their emotions, there would be batsmen out there wanting to use the piece of wood in their hands to good effect - on something other than a leather sphere, mind you :). The two players were involved in a heated exchange in the 46th over of New Zealand's chase, when Styris struck Johnson for two boundaries. The players bumped shoulders and then appeared to clash heads. Initially, there was a verbal exchange between the two players but at that point Johnson approached Styris and made what the umpires felt was deliberate and inappropriate physical contact with his opponent. The umpires felt Styris contributed to the verbal exchange that preceded the physical contact and that his actions contravened clause 2.1.8 which covers actions that are contrary to the spirit of cricket or bring the game into disrepute. Styris pleaded guilty at an early stage which, like in Johnson's case, made a full hearing unnecessary. He was fined 15% of his match fee. "Sometimes in the heat of competition players cross over the line of what is acceptable behaviour and that has clearly happened in this case," Madugalle said. "I made it clear to them that as role models it's important that they conduct themselves not only within the laws of cricket but also in keeping with the spirit of the game." The charges were laid by on-field umpires Rudi Koertzen and Tony Hill, and third umpire Chris Gaffaney. Styris, however, played down the incident. "There was nothing more than normal, the Australians play good competitive cricket and I'd like to think that we'll match them in that competitiveness. There wasn't anything untoward out there," Styris said. When asked if there had been a head-clash, he said: "He might have come quite close. I don't know, he may have done." Ricky Ponting, Australia's captain, had intervened to separate the two. "Obviously something happened," Ponting said. "I rushed in as quickly as I could and separated them as quick as I could and we just tried to finish off the game well from there."

What utter tosh! Why should Styris be fined at all? From the videos, it appears that he was not in the wrong at all. The ill tempered, out of control Johnson should have been penalized more. This 60% fine is really an eyewash. Physical contact between players must necessarily be treated in a much more severe fashion. It sets an example. And the punitive degree determines what kind of example it ends up being.

Wasnt Gambhir banned for one test match for physical contact with Watson, why is Johnson not banned for 2 odis at least for physical contact.When Aussies are involved these dumb Fricking match referees/umpires talk about the instigators, Styris was the 'instigator' my foot all he did was talk since when talking/banter is an offense. The obvious difference between gambhir-watson & styris-johnson ACCIDENT was that when gambhir hit watson , he wasn't protected, so he felt pain.Here johnson tried to hit styris who was with helmets on.So it was mitchell johnson who was unprotected and would have felt much pain...oh.. poor.. ozziee...
