This is one reservation or quota system that I feel myself in agreement with. It should not be made into a permanent feature, but having it in place for say a couple of decades will probably be helpful. Women in India are oppressed, I don't think that's something which can be debated and this would help putting them in important positions. It's probably going to be misused initially with wives and daughters of the main politicians entering the fray, but one can hope that over a period of time it can lead to genuine women representation with proper highlighting and focus on women related issues.

i agree with this Bill but my only worry is that a lot of politicians will have their spouses run for office but will rule by proxy and we have seen this many times before.I must say though that i trust women to take better decisions than men anytime.

Well, I dont quite understand the logic here. We are in danger of using reservations for each and every aspect of social injustice, which is appalling. The UPa is split right down the middle with key allies like Laloo against the bill and his excuse, "dilution of already existing caste based reservations"..God save our country, if he exists....

They are already doing a good job of it. Almost every school and college in India sees girl toppers and that is a very good indicator of that. Reservation will only hamper the natural growth by giving them crutches when they can run fine.

Shameful to see after 60 years of Independence we have to resort to reservation for uplifting women in India. The strongest criticism should have come from women themselves, but I suppose oppertunity ensures one kills his/her morals first.

Tell u what, this women's rights issue is yet another example of shoddy law enforcement. No one wants to work on that. Just how long will we hope that reservations are the answer to our problems ? It does indicate how backward we are as human beings, struggling with problems of female infanticide, dowry, womens abuse etc and unable to emerge from those 60+ years after independence. I dont understand whats wrong with being a honest supposedly upper caste male in India, ur just out of half the race at so many crucial milestones of life. Phir bhi dil hai Hindustani.

Heck, the caste based quota per Ambedkar was supposed to have expired after 2-3 decades. In reality, what has happened? the percentage keeps on increasing each and every election term. And politics in India is unfortunately gutter level stuff, the only people who will benefit are the likes of Rabri Devi, and the Mamtas.

women are under-represented as CEOs as well. what next? a bill to ensure equality there as well? how about forcing women, especially the pretty ones to go to engineering colleges so that there is equal representation there? that is a bill I would support. :hehe:

Personally, I am not entirely convinced about the effectiveness of Reservation. But at a minimum, having 180 women in the highest legislative body of our nation does send a strong message, not just to the 1.2 billions strong Indians, but also to the rest of the world that India is serious about women's empowerment. Unfortunately though, all we can expect to see is to have all the big gun male politicians field their wives and daughters in these reserved seats.

Smart thinking by Congress to divert attention from spiralling prices and fuel prices issue..By the time this tries and tested method of 'raising the Women's bill and backing down later' completes it's effect, everything will be normal. Very smart move. I'm pretty sure the Yadav leaders are part of this game with Kangress..

Women.....again manipulated with (cost of) potatoes and tomatoes. Same old story.

I dont have any problem with women's reservation. But I have always been pissed off with reservations ever since school days. I dont know how many quotas and reservations are there in India. SC, ST, OBC, MOBC, sometimes religion based, sometimes one thing or the other crap and hundreds of other bloody useless reservations. Every bloody damn thing in India has got quota/reservations. And deserving people have to toil hard and yet lag behind due to these reservations. And frankly speaking, all the reservations in India instead need to be scrapped. I am neither employed nor a student now and so it does not affect me. But this bloody reservations and quote sh!ts are not helping anyone. The only reservation that should be there is for the poor. There should be poverty quota in everything instead of all these crap quotas and reservations. But no govt. or political party has got the balls to scrap these crap reservations but will instead increase them to help out their vote banks. The present reserved groups would stay in 5 star luxuries and yet be called backward class and reserved classes and take quota benefits As a student in India, a general person feels the most underprivileged. On the other hand, the so called backward classes enjoy luxuries of life and yet only score a few marks to get into good institutions through quota. Then if their job also has quota system then they know that they can get 2-3 times the promotion of normal people as they are quota people. Really the most underprivileged people in India are the general people. :P

And how do you define a poor. I hope you understand that a rich father's unemployed 18+ son will be able to claim benefits of such a reservation. No matter what measures you take, every single law or system to help the oppressed will be abused in some way in this country.

I agree to some extent .. but implementation of poverty quota is possible if SSN kind of economic condition based identification is provided in India .. there is always work going on for such a project which is named Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and that would be like the Social Security Number (SSN) of US ... and that project is headed by former CEO of Infosys Nandan Nilekani on personal request of Dr. Manmohan Singh .. it is going on in full swing and the UIDAI should be given out in a few years if not within the next year or so .. it might not be fool proof but at least it will be a lot better and make the whole of Indian economy a lot more transparent .. RTI (Right to Information) was another thing which made everything a lot more transparent I trust Nandan Nilekani and he is dedicated towards working for India's development. He left the position of Infosys CEO and he is working on the project in the rank of a cabinet minister. Bill Gates had also supported it and pledged to help the UIDAI if needed during his last visit. And I am quite hopeful that it will be quite effective though nothing can be fool proof as we all know. I want the poverty quota to be applied and all other quotas and reservations to be scrapped after the UIDAI is fully and properly implemented throughout India .. I agree that there might still be some misuse but it will still be a lot better than the present quota system which is grave misuse of the system .. at least the chances of backward people really getting opportunities would be a lot higher in poverty quota rather than the present quota system

And I want every quota in India to be scrapped except the disability quota if and after the poverty quota is implemented. And though it might sound ridiculous but I even want the freedom fighter quota to be scrapped now. I have seen people also misusing the freedom fighter quota with fake certificates. It has been 63 years since independence and there are hardly any freedom fighters left and so the quota is nearly worthless now and only left to be misused. I will also make a thread about UIDAI as I could not find one. We can keep that updated with the latest news regarding UIDAI so that people who do not know it or are not interested can also know about it.

Remove UPA.
I would say remove every damn political party present in India and create an honest, dedicated and patriotic political party who is concerned about the nation and its development instead of petty issues or their own benefit.. all the present parties are crap .. need a new party who is honest and is going to work for the whole country instead of dividing the country and working for their own vote banks
