Real men facing real men This was an incident that I had long heard/read about. It involved two characters, Michael Holing the great fast bowlers and Brian Close the great, if not greatest, character that ever played the game. Close was called to take on West Indies speedsters in 76, he was about 45 or so, after Windies pacers were running through Tony "grovel" Greig's English team. Experts and writers have wrtten about this many a times but probably the best compliment, to me, came from an old book owner at Oxford who was there at the time and told me the entire incident as it happened. It was amazing to see a 65 year old gets as excited as a 65 month old kid, yet cricket is known as the game that can do that to grown men. He runs almost from the boundary, very rythmic, tall and lean (he definitely does not need to check my get in shape for summer thread) and freaking fast...all with little effort and clean action. Taking nothing away from today's bowlers who obviously have to play more cricket, its also true that their action - Akhtar, Lee, Tait, Bond etc - always had the potential to affect their career. b) Brian Close the old Yorkshire man facing the barrage without protective gear. There are no helmets, no elbow guard, no chest guard and none of the 7000 mumbo jumbo batsmen wear these days. Even the pads at the time were half as good as today. And of course no bouncer rules. These days when it makes news when batsmen are hit on the body even once, and with all the body armour, Closey was hit about 30-40 times with nothing but bare chest. Much before my time but certainly my kind of cricket. xxx
