The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced it is presenting cricket fans with a unique opportunity to play a part in ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 by inviting them to propose a name for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 mascot, an elephant. Cricket fans can make their suggestions between 20 to 27 July, 2010 with the ICC announcing the winning name of the mascot at a launch in Colombo, Sri Lanka to mark '200 days to go' to the first match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 which will be played in Dhaka, Bangladesh on 19 February 2011. The ICC Cricket World Cup final will be in Mumbai on 2 April 2011. The mascot's key characteristics are: Young, enthusiastic and determined; thinks cricket is the most fun game in the world; loves playing street cricket-would play 24/7 if he could; worships his cricket heroes, their technique, skill and character; understands there is a lot to learn, work's hard at it, step by step; learning to master the art of concentration; dreams of playing in the ICC Cricket World Cup...one day and age: 10 (human years) Suggestions should be sent to mascot@icc-cricket.com. As pointed out its a symbol representing Ganesh which is fitting for a tournament in India, which has huge respect for the creatures, plus alot of our players are getting to the size of one.

I dont even think that was the rationale behind the mascot. I doubt if it has a religious connotation to it at all. But it does look cute and if promoted rightly, could become big with the kids.

"ICC will announce the winning name of the mascot at a launch in Colombo, Sri Lanka to mark '200 days to go' to the first match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011," the international body said in statement today. The fans have been given a week, between July 20 to July 27, to submit their suggestions for the mascot's name, the elephant, at mascot@icc-cricket.com . ICC also said that the name should given keeping in mind the key characteristics of the mascot's personality.

2011 World Cup mascot to be called 'Stumpy' The mascot of the 2011 World Cup, which is an elephant, has been named Stumpy. The name was unveiled in Colombo on Monday. This is the second elephant mascot. The first was Appu, the baby elephant, in 1982 for the Asian Games in New Delhi. The International Cricket Council had launched an online competition to suggest names for the mascot of the next year's mega-event to be held in the sub-continent. ICC has tried to imbibe morals of an ideal player into the mascot's personality by stating that the mascot believes in hard work and is always learning to master the art of concentration. ICC had said the mascot is someone who is young and enthusiastic, and determined individual. He is someone who thinks cricket is the most fun game in the world and loves playing street cricket. He worships his cricket heroes, their technique, skill and character and dreams of playing in the ICC Cricket World Cup one day. The first match of the World Cup will be played in Dhaka, Bangladesh on February 19 next year and the final is scheduled to be held in Mumbai on April 2.
