More hype over joke IPL performances. Had a perfect opportunity to cement a permanent test spot against South Africa' date=' but failed completely. Has the works to come through but needs to start showing results in the longer versions against good attacks to be considered a genuine prospect.[/quote'] OWowowoooo... Steady on there Shwetabh... You dont want up and coming players to give interviews until they 'start showing results'? And it isnt like Vijay actually told the interviewer stuff like 'I am the future of India's test batting' or something.. They asked relaxed stuff about his personal life and he answered it and I find it perfectly normal.. Now, from where did bad words like 'hype, failed completely, start showing results..'etc come in here? :hmmm:

He is the most technically sound batsman out there. Gauti had an indifferent start to his career. He has settled down. But i predicted he would do well for India for long time even 5 years back. You can tell about certain guys based on their technique, temperament, talent and application. Vijay more or less fits the bill when you compare him to other guys who haven't done zilch at the highest level. You cannot possibly blame Vijay for not being consistent as his place in the side and batting order in the side is not consistent. He opens in a match. Then he bats at no.5 one day. Then he bats at no.3. Also he was used only as a backup. In the first test against SA entire India flunked against Steyn. If he keeps his mind focused he will be one for the future.

Nothing to do with his interview, more to to with your post and others who have gone ballistic after a few IPL cowlashes.

Nothing to do with his interview' date=' more to to with your post and others who have gone ballistic after a few IPL cowlashes.[/quote'] So you're saying that IPL performances dont count at all? That we shouldnt factor it into consideration, when scouting for potential India stars for the future? There are many guys out there who have come up with reasonable performances, but whats made Vijay stand out is the fact that how he has, until this point, always been billed as a test match player, ala, in the VVS mode. But the way he has been able to adapt his game to suit the demands of T20 shows his superior talent and all-round maturity. And that's why many of us are understandably excited. And remember Shwetabh, the last time you called someone a 'cowlasher', he went on to top the run-scoring charts of the Ranji trophy the following year and scored a superb counter attacking 100 in the final that won even your respect. :winky:

Irrelevant. Came up a cropper against South Africa and joke IPL performances are no indicator of potential success.

And you would also do well to note that I am not bagging him for failing in this years' IPL either. My assessment of him is solely on the basis of his FC record.

How is that relevant? Can you tell me when I have squealed like a teenager based on Kohli's performance in IPL?

I respect first class stats. But i like to see who they score against and how they do. Otherwise Yusuf Pathan would be playing Test for his match winning knock in DUleep Trophy. But he got like 10 lives . He did everything with cowlashing.

Both players are seen as potential batting mainstays in the Indian Test batting order. One has first class, test and IPL performances to back his claim. The other has first class, ODI and IPL performances to show. You joined in the hype over Kohli but when it came to Vijay, your wisdom levels have increased manifold.

do you know how clueless you are ? have you checked how dravid, ganguly or even sachin fared vs SA IN THEIR FIRST SERIES VS sa?

You did hyperbole on misleading hundreds scored by kohli vs kulasekara and co in dewy conditions and even wanted a test spot for him :hysterical: against any quality attack,Kohli has so far been out of his depth. at least vijay was not doing fishing vs kallis and langeveldt :--D

Yes, Vijay didnt do that well against SA, but you just cant compare him with Sachin or Dravid. I am sure he is as good as/better than the rest of the crop of youngsters. The IPL has just shown another dimension of his batting, glimpses of which he showed in the challenger series(I am not sure if it fits the bill for you Mr.Outsider, as a tourney worth having a look at for national selection). And his game on overseas tracks is to be seen-but so it is for all the other guys who are not established. As for the IPL- It is the domestic T20 tournament in India and why shouldn't T20 team selections be based on it? In fact Jadeja, Nehra, Yusuf(to some extent) have all done a fair job at nternational level, after getting selected based on IPL performance.

Half the overs are bowled by crappy bowlers and the fielding standards are abysmal. They can be used to make T20 selections, nothing more. If you believe otherwise, that's fine, we can disagree.

He was stereotyped as a test cricketer and was loosing out to other contenders like Kohli in ODIs and T20s because of this perception that he is suited only for the longer version. Now, with this year's IPL performance he has proved that he is capable of adapting to different formats while still managing to play proper cricketing shots. That is indeed another feather in his cap whether you agree or not.

Well I find it weird that you'd simply dismiss all IPL performances as 'joke' and 'no indicator of potential success'. Agreed that the quality of opposition in the IPL is not always first-class, but its nowhere close to being mediocre. Besides, irrespective of the opposition, a good batting performance is indeed a reasonable indicator of talent and a potential indicator of future success. (same for a bowler as well).

As I said, it's alright for selection for T20 if that. Excuse me if I don't get excited about IPL to the extent of measuring potential success in test matches, never mind appointing him a potential Indian captain. After the discussion in this thread, I did indeed watch the highlights of his century and another half century he scored against Bangalore. Frankly, I found his innings against Murali in the tests to be more promising. He was hitting through the line and connecting, regularly dispatching deliveries outside off to mid on-mid wicket region. I don't see how that kind of hitting can indicate anything for test matches. Just to reiterate, I think he is a good potential to invest him, just don't agree with the parameters being used to evaluate him here.
