maggot_brain Posted February 4, 2008 Posted February 4, 2008 deepa mehta is overated i mean way overated . all her movies are hyped up big but end up as huge dissapointment which was the case with fire earth and now water... the last one was really excruciatingly painful boring ****. she really knows to mess up with really good story.besides there are other directors who make socially relevant films and some of them are way better than deepa mehta's films. IMO Name me some good socially relevant films then - and by that I don't mean Rang de Basanti. Mehta is a bit overrated. Water was boring but Earth and Salaam Bombay were good.

The reason i called her movies bad was not beacuse of the Hindutva crap that you are talking about- I don't give two hoots about that; its her treatment and direction that is sub-standard Shekhar kapoor did an awesome job with Bandit Queen but he also made Elizabeth; shows that he has Directorial talent- there are many others who have shown more variety and are "real Directors" unlike Deepa Mehta who packages the same crap to cater to the Western Audiences There are real Indian chefs who know how to make currey and then there are the fake "British" ones who package curry as the real deal- Deepa is in the second category for sure

You have a good taste in movies Suma. How come I havent seen you write anything on movies yet? You gotta get off your ar$e and start writing an article or memoir of shorts mate. I hope you really do. Of the list of the movies you put up I can write a bit on most of them, have seen them all, but I would probably restrict myself to the very first - Saaransh. Pound for pound the best Anupam Kher(and probably Mahesh Bhatt's as well) best movie ever. It captured brilliantly the life of a senior citizen as he loses his son and tries to recover his ashes, or asthiyaan, from the grip of customs amidst a corrupt India. The shot where Kher shouts frustratingly/dispondently - Colour TV nahin apne bete ki asthiyaan lene aaya hoon - has to be one of the best shots seen on Indian cinema. My personal favorite is the scene where Anupam Kher laments at the lack of respect shown by the younger lot towards elder generation. In a moment of self-criticism he broods - Humse hi shayad kahin galti rah gayi jo hum acche sanskaar apne bacchon mein nahin daal paaye. Remains true even today ladies and gents. xxx

The problem with you is that you are the market for her. All she needs to show a few one-eyed views about the social status and guys like you will lap it up as truth. If you are concerned about 'million of people' living in 'abject misery', then you have the wrong source to make your opinions. If she thinks that the solution for 'sex' discrimination is to become a lesbian, then god help all women! Absolutely hate her movies for the blantant sensationalistic views. You should watch movies like 'Ghatashradh' or 'Damul' to understand how social relevant should be made.
suma25 Posted February 5, 2008 Posted February 5, 2008 lurker i havent seen all the movies i mentioned to be honest:D had seen saransh along time back when i wasin like 7th 8th grade but still remember the dialogue and scene how can you not??? whenever they mention abt saransh they play the same scene over and over :haha: I havent seen hazaron kwahishein aisi have to yet see the film but chandni bar was depressing movie .Satya and shiva are my all time favourites mainly because of ramu(rgv) That guy is a genius, sad he has fallen away in his recent films he is what got me interested in films His films and Hrishikesh mukherjee films. His shiva was a classic The chase sequence in shiva man o man what a scene nagarjuna running thru the gully with his niece and the goons after him and you can actually feel him panting that was the best and i havent seen it repeated by any director yet in any film apart from in black friday by anurag kashyap and he himself said that it is a tribute to the chase sequence in shiva . or for that matter all the action scenes in that movie were top notch. As for writing on films nah not for me....

As for writing on films nah not for me.... Shiva was awesome. The best Hindi horror movie I've ever seen was also an RGV product. I'm not talking about 'Bhoot' but 'Raat'. Revathi was outstanding in that. Hindi cinema has produced some amazing off beat films recently.

But not Sarkar. Sarkar was a low-point for RGV. THe background score was messed big time with those "govinda govinda" chants. WTF was that? He got worse in "Nishabd". Anyway, no point in RGV now. His 'factory' is coming out with utter trash. I would rather watch a movie like "Ek Chalis Ki last Local" than 'Aag". Darna Man hain was ok, but the sequel was worse.

Yes that sequence in Shiva is unforgettable. There's one in Company too (another RGV movie) where Vivek Oberoi is chased by gangsters in the lanes of a run down neighbourhood in Nairobi. That was pretty good too.

I never expressed outright support for her just dismay at the treatment she was given when she tried to film 'Water' and had to move to Sri Lanka to complete it. As for poverty in India - I've seen it first hand, I don't need Deepa Mehta to educate me.
