Surprise endings are something that I have come to expect of Hollywood movies of this genre (Drama), so much, that the surprises don't even surprise me anymore. But this film managed to do exactly that! Just when I thought "oh this is what I thought, so whats new?" There was one last surprise waiting for me! The story is set in the early days of World War II. People from war struck Europe try everything they can possibly do to get to Lisbon from where they can find there way to better life in America. This they must do by traveling though Casablanca in Morocco, Africa - a city known for its black market business in Transit Visas. Rick Blaine is an influential person who runs a cafe in Casablanca. Part of the influence is due to his seemingly give and take friendship that he shares with Captain Renault, the Chief of Police. Though Rick's own past is something that can get him into trouble he thrives because of present neutral political stance. It happens Ugarte who deals in the black market leaves 2 letters of transit obtained by murdering two German couriers with Rick. Who agrees to have it for a just a while, but before he could get back his transits meant for one Victor Laszlo, Ugarte, is arrested by Capt. Louis Renault apparently to impress Major Strasser of the third Reich (Nazi Germany). Capt. Renault has a bigger task in hand of having to stop Victor Laszlo a leader of an underground movement against Nazis & his company from leaving Casablanca, with the transits. To Rick's shock Mr. Victor Laszlo beautiful company & wife is none other than his former love who had left him in mysterious situation. Then there is this struggle between Love, patriotism,self preservation and friendship - of which seemingly one could win. All the actors perform exceedingly well! Many would see this film as a mere Drama but it has everything in it. Comedy, Patriotism, Romance, Sentiments! If you haven't watched this one you need to as soon as possible. I would give it 9.5/10!
Lurker Posted June 16, 2008 Posted June 16, 2008 Good one Lurker. Koshish is a great movie and I liked at the end when SK's son marries a mute girl himself. BTW I saw a really moving film recently called Satyakaam *ing Dharmendra and SK. I'm sure you must have seen it. One of Hrishikesh Mukherjee's earliest movies. Very good movie. Yes Satyakaam is a classic. One of Hrishikesh Mukherjee's finest work, and that itself is saying something about the movie. Dharmendra shed his macho hero and comes out triumphant as an actor.

Dirty_South Posted June 19, 2008 Posted June 19, 2008 Two Classics The Enforcer - 6/10 I gave it a six bcoz of Clint Eastwood , the climax cud have been better.... Rear Window - 8/10 Alfred Hitchcock's movie !!! James was perfect in his role , excellent acting and superb direction.
