Ian Chappell is a fine commentator but like all people who will insist on calling a spade a 'bloody shovel' he will keep finding himself in a situation where someone will prove him wrong once in a while. Mostly it does not show Ian Chappell to be wrong in his over all thinking. Its just that being so convinced that he is right (which he very often is) he does not leave any possibility of the odd exception to the rule in his use of strong words to make his case. But we have to be thankful for that. It is much better than those who are so much of middle-of-the-roaders that they rarely say anything with any degree of certainity. It does not take more than being able to construct a rudimentary sentence in English to say something like, "Sachin is not in the best of forms, hasn't been for quite some time now and many people have been asking for him to quit. They seem to be quite justified in what they are saying from Sachin's overall performance in the last year or two. Having said that we have to remember that Sachin is one of the game's all time greats. Who knows if he will still find a third wind and come back to make his detractors eat their words. I would say Sachin should retire but it is not cast in stone . . . blah, blah, blah. . . ." Lot of people hinted at Sachin's "impending departure" from the game but most of them tried to hedge their bets. Chappell didn't and we went after him hammer and tongs. Although he wasn't saying much different from what many others were politely hinting. If every top commentator is going to "hum and haw" we are never going to hear anything that we cant "hum and haw" about ourselves. I think Ian is fine and when he is proved wrong he is man enough to admit it. That is good enough for me.

I have come to the conclusion that T20 tournaments don't deserve any elite commentators. Keep them for test cricket where in depth analysis is of prime importance. Can't wait for test cricket...it makes me happy.

You mean the best commentators do not deserve to make the big bucks . . . besides getting to enjoy those fancy late night parties :-)

I distinctly remember Ian Chappel going on to say that Sehwag did not have a brain between his ears. Today when he talks about Sehwag having a fine cricketing brain and that Warner being with Sehwag can only be good for the young kid - I cannot help but have a wry smile. It is one thing to be categorical with your statements. Quite another to lift your foot and squarely place it in your mouth, na? :)

While on the subject of commentators and commentary, Isuch mangles of the language as 'Both these two batsmen.....' are both distracting and funny. The funnier thing is the guy who keeps doing this is Bumble!

Shastri is a cliche king. But Manjrekar is the worst when he it comes to repeating the same observation a million times.

I think Boycott described Sehwag as brainless. Because Ian has supported Sehwag from as back as I can remember. His comments on Sachin came back to bite him, but he was entitled to do such comments considering the form Sachin was in at that time. And I don't recollect any really protesting that comment either.

Also about that 'look in the mirror' article on Sachin, Chappell got a lot of stick. He did not hear the end of it back then. And no, he was not justified in writing that article. Because he was questioning Sachin's commitment to India's cause. He was insinuating that Tendulkar was carrying on in the team for reasons non-cricketing. It is might cheap of a former cricketer to suggest that. I lost all respect for him after that.

I loved the way he got pawned by Lara & Dravid when he welcomed them both in the commentary box by saying more than 25 k runs in the commentary box, and Lara & Dravid asking him how much did he score :hysterical::hysterical:.
