Nova Posted May 8, 2010 Posted May 8, 2010 Yes you get good hard drives in India too. I wouldn't buy one from the US...coz I don't know if the warranty would be valid. Brand is a matter of preference. The technology has matured enough that you should be ok with either brand. Capacity depends on how much data you want to back up and your pattern of use. I would definitely go for 500GB....the extra dough is worth it. Just recently I was looking for 2TB drives but my back up needs are higher. Another option to consider is to buy a internal hard drive (because they are cheaper and can last longer) and get a external enclosure for it.

Thanks for info on Warranty! I thought if u buy in Usa, warranty is Global. But ur right, it may not be so - need to check. Since you seem to have idea abt this in india, any info on approx Rs. prices for these? PS: Holysmoke baba - do you know as well?

Why would you import from another country than where you are residing right now unless it is not available in that particular country. I am using Seagate 1 TB external hard drive I bought from India and it is working well since the last one year. For I TB, Seagate is cheaper if I remember correctly but for smaller capacity ones both are nearly the same price I suppose. I bought Seagate 1 TB from ebay last year for around Rs.4800 including shipping and handling. So, 250 GB or 500 GB should cost nearly half of that IMO. Check on ebay and Indiatimes for the Indian prices. Indiatimes is providing good deals on external hard drives too I suppose as they mention it quite regularly in their promotional mails.

Now, I'm unable to access it at all. So, after a week or two, i'm trying to get my data back and then sending it back to seagate to fix it. They actually gave me a 2 years warranty when I bought it. Now i know why :)

Just buy another drive and back it up again :winky: I maintain several backups for crucial data. It's a pain in the ass to do it but I can't afford to lose all of it.

I agree.. both my computer and my external hard drive is unlikely to crash at the same time .. anyways whenever my computer crashes I only format the C drive and I always keep my data on the other drives so that they are not lost. I have been doing that since my first computer 10 years ago. I just format C whenever my computer crashes. I dont save any important data on C drive intentionally and also assign lesser disk space to C drive. Thereby I dont lose any data at all. This time I have bought genuine Windows 7 which itself cost around 7K here in India and and installed it on my computer. Hope that my system does not crash again after installing Windows 7 as Microsoft said it is their best and most secure OS till now.
Nova Posted May 8, 2010 Posted May 8, 2010 ^ Yes it's better to keep the OS and data separate. I do something similar like you but I have gone a step further: 1. My primary drive has a partition of 20GB where only the OS and applications are installed. The second partition has all my data. So if my OS gets corrupted, then I can format the C drive and my data will still be safe (because it's in another partition). 2. The back up drive also has a 20GB partition for OS with all my data backed up in the second partition. The advantage of having the 20GB partition is that if my primary drive fails, then I can quickly swap it with my backup drive which already has separate space for OS to be installed. This way I don't have any down time because my computer is still functional. 3. Now I proceed to shop for another drive to replace the failed drive and partition it with the same above strategy. I am still using XP :D

Its a lot by Amreeekan standard but in Aus 160 GB was for $70, 320 GB for $89 and 500 GB is usually around $130. All these are the ones which dont need to be powered , it works with 2 USBs. It has 1 year warranty and I can return it in the next 3 months with No questions asked :aha: I thought of looking at ebay but decided not to buy from there as its not worth the risk. ebay is fine for most of the other stuff but I wont buy HD, a new TV etc from ebay or from any other website. I am copying all my import stuff onto the HD but at the same tme I am leaving it on my pc. Just need to remember to have 2 copies of it at any given time.
