Pick your fav SAF choke

Today's choke has to top the list as it was against the no.8 team whereas SA was predicted as the potential WC finalists since the start. However, the 99 choke would be close behind too.

how was today's result a 'choke' ? NZ won by 49 runs which is a very convincing margin. south africa were just outplayed and showed why i was right to criticize their lower middle order before the tournament began. their batting, after the top 4, was too brittle. and NZ played their hearts out. i dont think oram will ever have a better match, that catch was spectacular.

I still pick the '99 WC semi final loss as the top choke!! Klusener must have been gutted after that super human effort.

Chasing a grand total of 221 against the mighty Kiwis and cruising at 108/2 at half way with 2 very well set batsmen at the crease and then go on to lose Kallis' date='ABD, Duminy,Botha,Petersen in the space of 10 overs and about 25 runs is nothing but a classic choke.[/quote'] this is ridiculous. in that case, every single defeat any team faces can be called a choke.

Not really. You had to watch todays match ... it was just meandering away and SAF had pwned NZ for three quarters of the match ... and wham it was over in a flash in the next 10 overs.
so they collapsed. thats not a choke. and NZ played some seriously good cricket to beat them, didn't they? fielded brilliantly. anyway, i am sure most south africans are now rooting for india to win because we have gary kirsten

SAF went nuts chasing a paltry total after they lost their two well set batsman. I think they were forced to choke because of the fear that their ancestral team has in built in them :--D

this is ridiculous. in that case' date=' every single defeat any team faces can be called a choke.[/quote'] Yeah, every defeat where a team which is favorites for 75% of the match duration(not to mention the best performers in the league stage and have a much better team than NZ) and loses can be called a choke. Go and look at the Kallis, Duminy, and DeVilliers dismissals.

Is that what you understood from my post which you quoted in it's glory?
No, but I am sure you understand where I am coming from. Generally speaking, how is it fair to term every South African loss a choke?

It was a choke. Like BB said, they were cruising and suddenly started doing a SAF. Also, a collapse in case of SAF in a crucial match in the WC which causes them to get eliminated is auto classified as a choke.

Have I termed every South African loss as a choke? If not, why are you quoting and asking me? As for this particular loss I've already given reasons why I consider it a choke.

SA's past performances and the disturbing pattern of losing in crunch situations in major tournaments have contributed and cemented to their reputation as being the chokers of the cricketing world. And it's got a lot to do with the context of these collapses. If a basketball player misses four or even five out of every ten 3-pointer shots taken by him in the course of a match it's not a big deal. But if he misses the shot with less than 2 seconds on the clock everytime in a big match, even if it's once in a season, then everybody notices and he's called a choker.

99 WC and T20 07. I remember a match during T20 WC 07 in which they were playing against us. We only made about 150 runs in first innings. And it looked as though they would win it easily, but they botched it up while chasing and ended up losing. Really chockers they are.
