IPL does help but the problem is that we don't take its help. IPL showed us which players were doing well and which ones weren't but we always pick players based on reputation forgetting that in T20 its the current form that matters the most

The team had to be selected after just 12 days of IPL. So obviously previous games were used as criteria and not the recent IPL.

Those over-rated , self-proclaimed T20 experts would not have got many games in the IPL. They know squat about playing for a professional team.

There are lot of indirect things that IPL did influence. Spinners opening the bowling has become almost ritual. Wasn't the case in the last world T20 or the IPL. I think Warnie was the first to do in the last IPL opening with Yusuf who accounted for Hayden once.

Simple. No one gives a sh*t about the performance of overseas players in IPL. An ABDV or a DIlshan doing zilch in IPL is perfectly fine for a franchise (and the media) as there are equally good foreign players available in the larger squad. But for them an Indian international failing is unaccenptable as it weakens the team considerably. Also our players are more under the scanner during the whole IPL. Yuvraj failing makes headline news, Sreesanth's bowling form makes headlines, Dhoni's inability to accelerate in the end overs is a front page news item but you never hear anything about the bowling form of Roach, Bond or Vettori. So in a way, for our players its much more intense compared to the foreigners ( for whom this is no more than a 5-6 week long paid holiday). Didn't Steyn say something very similar post IPL 1? Imagine an Indian player saying something like " Oh IPL is just like a money making opprotunity for me , work or no work, I get paid , so I am happy". The media, team owners and BCCI all will ensure that the player's cricket career ends there and then.

A Yuvraj may go two seasons without setting anything alight and still get picked by a team because well, he is Indian, he has more appeal, and more importantly he is 1 of 7. Of course this will be accompanied by a significant dip in his price, but he is nevertheless guaranteed to be picked by one IPL team. End of the day he is a local player and even if he is only the 6th or 7th best performer in the team, he has a chance of being selected. That's not the case with a player like Gibbs. Being one in 4, he has more competition to withstand to justify his spot. He is under pressure to prove himself every single time, or he will be benched.

That has ZERO impact on the pay cheque he gets from IPL. Yes for an international player who is trying to get back to form or trying to win back his place in his national side, IPL performances do matter, but for most of them it doesn't count much.

And my point is Indian players are under the scanner all the time and hence under more pressure. Not too many int'l players participate in the media briefings or some other promotion even, but Indian players are forced to attend every little sh*t that the team owner or promoter asks them to come for.

All things agreed. But do you think Hayden and Symmo and other non-performers this year will get the same paycheque they got 3 yrs back? No. Franchises aren't as dumb as we think they are. Ditto goes with the Ishant Sharma's of Indian cricket.

it would be unfair to say foreigners don't have a competition. Their spot is never secure...the spotlight is on them mostly and if they don't perform they risk losing their spot......Mcgrath, Ponting, Md. Ashraful, Damyn Martin .....all lost their spots......the chop for Haydos is coming next year...you don't perform...you go home play with your kids
