What does the sport of CRICKET have to do to be popular in the USA?

Let's not lie to ourselves, Football is the greatest sport in the US right now, but no one gives a crap about Rugby or even Soccer. Baseball is in 2nd place, and no one gives a crap about Cricket. What would the sport of Cricket have to change in order to be as popular as Baseball in America? For example, what types of rule changes? and an extra question, Which sport is better? And if Baseball is truly better, why does Cricket continue to exist?

Why can't two sports co-exist? If they are so similar, why do Yanks have so much difficulty in understanding cricket? Baseball is unbelievably boring, its OK to play, but so so boring to watch. All those breaks, kinda like football (American football) way too many stoppages. Maybe we need to make cricket even more boring, add extra breaks in play. Oh wait IPL strategic timeouts

Well its doubtful if cricket as we know it will be popular. Americans like to modify existing sports to make it suitable for them and then conduct national level championships all the while calling it a "World Championship"... They did it with baseball from cricket (which English played), did it with Football (from rugby), did it with Nascar and Indy 500 (from F1)... So potentially, they may come up with a even more modified version of cricket and play a "world Championship" between cities... :winky:

Why are they wasting time and money on the USA's already bloated sporting market? There's plenty of places with more potential and less competition than america. Why not try push it through in more african nations or something. There's simply no room for cricket in the US.

Why do we want cricket to be "popular" in the USA? (I assume we are talking about popularity amongst those besides the Indians, Pakistanis, Sri Lankans etc) This is exactly the kind of ideas some so called cricket administrators had which led the game in exactly the wrong direction to start with. If the problem is that we are not able to sustain the interest of those who live in cricket playing countries, it is those countries and their populace that should have been the concern. The way to popularise a sport is not to keep finding newer markets even when the traditional one's are deserting it (if so) but to find the reasons why and address them. Even that simple thing could not be understood properly by the morons who ran the game from Lord's in the sixties. The problem of dropping interest in Test matches as well as the poor finances of many counties had to be addressed by looking at what was wrong with the Test match format and making some changes in that (besides a better model for sharing the spoils amongst those who depended upon whatever money the game was generating. But those idiots decided that it was better to forget the problem with Test matches and think of a new format all together. This is like the American auto industry, finding itself losing out to more fuel efficient cars deciding not to do anything about their huge SUV's but deciding to make small two seaters and then finding that the Japs and the Koreans made even two seaters better, dumping the two seaters and making bikes. The analogy is slightly off because I do not think of cricket as a product and running the game as a profit making enterprise but I think this is what people understand a bit better. The game, as it stands, needs to be made more popular with the existing markets and this is THE main objective of any sports body for unlike the car manufacturers, they are not into just money making where the Tatas can jump from steel to salt to cement to automobiles to lipstick and so on. Why not let BCCI (and Modi-Pawar-Manohar et el) run football, hockey, tennis, kabaddi, basketball etc etc in India in that case and let the best sport(one or more) amongst these, alongwith cricket then survive based purely on the bottom line. Because that is all this line of thinking must eventually lead to ;-)

T20 is the only form of Cricket that will ever be popular in US... .no one has patience or time for the other formats Cricket is actually making a progress here.... 10 yrs ago....the only reference to "cricket" would have been the insect but nowadays cricket as a sport is slowly being known here by the masses... recently it has been used as a reference in popular tv sitcoms and movies. Remember soccer took YEARS to become popular and still today is not a mainstream sport America has a sporting culture completely different from rest of the world..it's quite unique in its way and will be popular for a long long time.
