f2000560 Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 Dk has been our reserve keeper for donkey's years now but when it comes to batting though he gets starts he is ultimately end up disappointing. One might argue he is not bad for a keeper but the counter argument is this is not 1980 or even 1990 we need a legitimate keeper batsman as backup for Dhoni. Also given that a backup keeper for the world cup Squad is likely its an absolute waste of space to have Karthik in there. Is it too late to unearth alternatives? THere is just Saha & Naman ? any other contenders ?
Lord Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 only other option i see is Uthappa.but i think Karthik is doing a fair job.considering he plays all over the batting order
rkt.india Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 I think Aditya Taare from MI was impressive in his short bursts..would like to see him in ranji trophy action this year....
f2000560 Posted June 7, 2010 Author Posted June 7, 2010 only other option i see is Uthappa.but i think Karthik is doing a fair job.considering he plays all over the batting order well forgive me for being a doubter but Uthappa's international career is fairly similar another very capable and attacking batsman not getting more than good starts. Maybe this time might be different but i really doubt it. We need someone who can do more than 15-20 kinda score. As far as floating role goes DK should have done well somewhere atleast by now.
Sachinism Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 Karthik is better than the rest. He's shown glimpses but fails to go on way too often. Also as Lord pointed out he's all over the order, in and out of the team, filling gaps at last moment. So its not been easy I think Aditya Taare from MI was impressive in his short bursts..would like to see him in ranji trophy action this year.... Yeh I think some ranji games are required before we look at him. Uthappa was pretty average with the gloves. But could turn out to be a handy batsman. Useful power hitter who has more shots and ability than the likes of Yusuf
The Realist Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 Good thread, I've been thinking along the same lines too. Karthik always seems to get starts but never kick on and get teh really big scores which would cement his spot. He's a decent keeper, nothing more. Looked good on the Eng tour a few years ago as a makeshift opener but does not appear to have developed much further. It does not help that he only ever gets limited chances but he looks like the kind of player who will forever be a reserve.
achilles Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 No. He'll be back coz selectors just don't seem to select Robin (even as a batter, forget spare keeper), Saha is too inexperienced, Naman has a few miles to go and Parthiv is forgotten.

Naman - not seen enough to say

Uthappa when he gets fit might be considered but I don't think his keeping is all that, and if you compare ODI/T20I averages, it isn't like he is much better than DK.

diegovegaz Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 kaarthick hasn't been utilised well by the team management he has become a stop-gap arrangement in the line-up whenever either of our openers gets injured or a spot opens up in the middle order, he's put in there, and his performance hasn't been looked into for the next game ideally, he should find a spot at no 7, better than yusuf or jaddu he's a better finisher, than an opening batsman should be given a chance down the order
achilles Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 Karthik was dropped from the Test team after one average series, which was exactly how Aakash Chopra was "rewarded". Why do we want to keep losing people is completely beyond me!

The point is, I am not convinced his keeping is good enough to play as a keeper batsman rather than batsman only.

King Tendulkar Posted June 7, 2010 Posted June 7, 2010 Karthick should be in squad as back up keeper!
