We have seen some pretty festive atmosphere with lots of interesting sounds and music during the cricket world cups in South Africa. People don't have anything a local region's culture, in fact most people enjoy it. It is just that this particular instrument is not played rhythmically, it is just blown non-stop generating noise which is totally unpleasant.

They spent billions of dollars in staging this tournament while you on your arm chair will tell them how they should celebrate:two_thumbs_up: The world cup will not return to the African soil in foreseeable future..this is their time as they say, so let them rejoice. What's the problem? Anyway, they have decided to lower the decibels in future matches...now, I seriously hope you can live with it. PS: The vuvuzela is a South African thing, the rest of the Africa still play their drums, etc.

achilles Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 To all those people who seem to hate vuvuzela's- Ask yourself one question: Will you like people from other countries commenting on the way we celebrate, yell out loud, molest players, conduct ourselves, act over-the-top when we host a World Cup, Commonwealth Games, Olympics, et al? No. Heck, even a random comment gets us all boiled up. Lets try to respect someone's culture. To think that something should be stopped coz we don't like it is setting a dangerous precedent.

Similarly, the vuvuzela holds tremendous significance for the South Africans. What highlights this is the interview the High Commissioner of SA to India gave to Rajdeep Sardesai, where he even mentioned that "Vuvuzela's have been around for a very long time and have been given the name 'vuvuzela' only recently. It is a part of our culture and it is non-negotiable". Sure we can let the country hosting the World Cup indulge in their culture, isn't it?

I might hate the vuvuzela in person, but I'm liberal/idealistic/open to change to accept these guys cheer the sport the way they do, that too in their country, may I add. I guess we should just agree to disagree on this one.
