What exactly is haram? Playing a Hindu in a movie? Or eating food earned from a non Islamic business/enterprise? I don't seem to recollect any Surahs of the holy Quran or verses from the Hadith that don't permit a girl to play the role of a non believer in a Hollywood movie. Is it limited to Hollywood, or does it cover Bollywood movies also? What community? Irrespective of her level of 'hotness' the news is terrible. The punishment to her brother is just and deserved.
Referring to the South Asian community in general. Fact is that such notions of purity and caste/class is pretty prevelant, be it hindu, muslim orotherwise. I don't think that there are many familes who would accept anyone for their children, based purely on superficiality alone (race, religion, class).

why the surprise? what do you expect????
Nothing I guess. Them living in UK in 2011 doesnt seem to have any effect on their perception of modern culture and realise themselves how backwards thinking they are. This goes to many families not just in India/paki/bangla but also a lot of immigrant families in western countries.

 Wot ? Are you serious ? I mean its common knowledge that they don't even permit women to wear normal clothes let alone step outside the house and work that too amongst men ( unless you live in a totally different world than others ).
Well, I am one of 'them'. I wear normal clothes, sometimes too 'normal' for the liking of my parents :P, work among and with men and drive my car. I can also spell my name backwards inside 3 seconds. I stay in a place called Mumbai. Unless you are an ignorant village hick who has not seen/heard of urban civilization, chances are that you wouldn't call Mumbai a 'totally different world' . :winky:
I some times wonder what would people write if indeed we were talking about a very tolerant and peaceful ideology with a very long and proven track record of tolerance and peaceful coexistence with others. There is hardly a week that goes by when we are not reminded of the regressive and medieval nature of this ideology and yet there is no shortage of people standing up and shouting down those who dare to ask a few pointed questions. And in b4 Zeenat Amman is produced as a example to prove me wrong. :hysterical:
Excuse my Hebrew, but what has all this to do my question? I merely asked for the exact verses which forbid a person ( either male or female) from playing the role of a non believer in a play/movie as the earlier poster had mentioned. That is all. While I am no expert on Islam, Islamic jurisprudence does interest me. I would like to know where these verses are from? Is acting haram (Zap_Branigan mention it being haram) under economic laws or under etiquette laws etc. Thats what I'm looking for. Period. As for the incident, it is obviously deplorable and the girl did the right thing going to the police. The brother and his family got what they deserve.

BB what you quoted above can easily be attributed to old school hinduism as well. THe whole concept of bharathiya naari revolves around such an ideology. You can qlso find such concepts in both judaism and christianity too. Gender role evolution is something that is recent.

http://www.islam-qa.com/en/ref/10680/rights%20of%20wife The rights of the wife which are hers alone: The wife has financial rights over her husband, which are the mahr (dowry), spending and accommodation. And she has non-financial rights, such as fair division between co-wives, being treated in a decent and reasonable manner, and not being treated in a harmful way by her husband. 1. Financial rights (a) The mahr (dowry). This is the money to which the wife is entitled from her husband when the marriage contract is completed or when the marriage is consummated. It is a right which the man is obliged to pay to the woman. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): ... (b) Spending. The scholars of Islam are agreed that it is obligatory for husbands to spend on their wives, on the condition that the wife make herself available to her husband. If she refuses him or rebels, then she is not entitled to that spending. The reason why it is obligatory to spend on her is that the woman is available only to her husband, because of the marriage contract, and she is not allowed to leave the marital home except with his permission. So he has to spend on her and provide for her, and this is in return for her making herself available to him for his pleasure. What is meant by spending is providing what the wife needs of food and accommodation. She has the right to these things even if she is rich, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): ... © Accommodation. This is also one of the wife’s rights, which means that her husband should prepare for her accommodation according to his means and ability. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): (ii) Kind treatment. The husband must have a good attitude towards his wife and be kind to her, and offer her everything that may soften her heart towards him, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
