The Parthiv Patel-led side scored a two-run victory over AIS in its first game, before trouncing South Africa by a comfortable 102-run margin in the next. Against AIS, India rode on Shikhar Dhawan's 37-ball 58 to post a competitive 168 for four in their allotted 20 overs after winning the toss and deciding to bat. He was ably supported by Parthiv (39) and Manish Pandey (32) en route the total. With a defendable total on board, pacer Jaydev Unadkat (3/33) then impressed with the new ball to restrict the Australian side to 166 for five. Apart from his exploits with the bat, Dhawan also played a part in the downfall of two AIS wickets. He ran out danger man Luke Pomersbach (59 off 36), the top-scorer of AIS, and chipped in with a wicket while conceding just 25 runs from his three overs. James Faulkner was the other half centurion for AIS, but eventually his 42-ball unbeaten 52 was not enough to see the Australian team home. In the second match, Dhawan (47) and Parthiv (37) again came up with a solid start that enabled India to pile up 166 for seven on the board after they were sent in to bat by South Africa. Apart from the opening duo, Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara and Manish Pandey scored identical 14s while Naman Ojha made a quickfire 20 down the order to take India beyond the 160-mark. For South Africa, Cornelius de Villers picked three wickets for 34. Defending the target, Unadkat (4/10) and R Vinay Kumar (2/13) dished out a breathtaking opening spell to bowl out South Africa for a paltry 64 runs in 13.1 overs. Piyush Chawla (2/8) was also among wickets with his leg spinners.

During the Test series against Sri Lanka alone, India lost S Sreesanth, Gautam Gambhir, Harbhajan Singh. And even before the tri-series has begun, another victim -- Ishant Sharma -- has been claimed. Add Zaheer Khan to the mix and it’s clear that India are missing some serious firepower. However, Mahendra Singh Dhoni is far from preturbed. In fact, he believes that this is a blessing in disguise because it gives India a chance to test their bench strength ahead of the World Cup. However, if the Indian skipper were to have a chance to look at coach Praveen Amre’s report, of which Mumbai Mirror has a copy, after the India ‘A’ tour of England in June-July, he perhaps wouldn’t be as optimistic. Short fall The first thing one noticed in the report is Amre’s assessment that the batsmen ‘still need to learn how to effectively handle short-pitched deliveries.’ This is one of the flaws that has crept into the senior team and one would have hoped that the next crop of cricketers would at least learn to work their way around this short coming. Amre goes on to mention that the ground fielding was ‘not upto par’ either. We keep hearing that the younger generation of Indian cricketers are very good in the field but when the coach tells you otherwise, you tend to believe that. The report also slams Manish Pandey’s performance on the tour. The 20-year-old Karnataka player had become the first Indian player to score a century in the IPL but he has failed to gain any consistency since then. “He displayed very poor form and performance. Very lucky to get to play most of the matches. He was unable to score even a single fifty in any format. His batting technique was found wanting. His mindset against the quickies has to be worked on,†states the report. Bengal’s Manoj Tiwary, a former India hopeful, wasn’t spared either. “Performance not commensurate with his ability. Failure in Tests. Footwork and batting skills not good enough against genuine pace attack. Only one 70 plus runs in innings after playing all matches,†the report said about Tiwary. During the last year, India has tried as many as nine different bowlers in the one-day arena without ever looking close to arriving at a permanent solution. Not one of these bowlers, Sudeep Tyagi included, played more than five ODIs. However, instead of taking the challenge, head-on, Tyagi seems headed the wrong way. “I was personally very disappointed with his attitude. He sprained his side amongst other things but he was shadow of his original self. Not once did he look like the brilliant bowler of the last year’s emerging player’s team in Australia. Needs to rehabilitate and work on his bowling. If he has to go to the next level, his fielding has to improve,†Amre wrote in the report. Silver lining But the report made some constructive criticism as well, particularly in the case of Cheteshwar Pujara, who was the leading run-getter in the Tests as well as the one-dayers. “This is a highly focussed player with comparable temperament. He still needs to work on his speed for the shorter version of the game. He seems to manage the short pitched deliveries quite well but there is still room for improvement to reach the next level. Nice post Karan very interesting to get an inside view of the A tour. Crappy fielders and cant play short ball eh? what else is new. Thats what these tours are about anway, to improve on those things. Shame though that 'Poor attitude' crops up a a couple of times. Hope Sudeep can regain his form, he seems like a good wicket taking bowler. Wish he was fit.

The management could've given the u19 batsman and superb fielder, Mandeep a chance on this tour. He had a fairly good start in the Ranji ODIs along with Unadkat and would've helped him gain some valuable experience. Looking forward to how he peforms in the Ranji this upcoming season. The other u19 player who did well on the u19 tours was Mayank Aggarwal, a flashy type of batsman ala Sehwag. Not too convinced about him yet though..

Don't think he'll get counselled or whatever. This is not CA under which he plays. If he has a burning desire to play for India, he'll have to bring himself on track and that too soon. Or he'll be another one in the list headed by Yuvraj Singh.

The final T20 match is now going on. AIS won the toss and have elected to bat first. And they have scored 66/3 in 10.3 overs. 1 wickets each for Unadkat, Kumar and Dhawan.

India slipping! Just 75 scored after 10 overs and that too at the loss of 4 batsmen. Dhawan for 6, Patel for 9, Rahane for 11 and Pandey for 11 -- all have been dismissed cheaply. Wonder how they'll make as many runs! So India loses. They've lost all the batsmen just for 98. Jadav 17, Pujara 38 and Ojha 4. All the 7batsmen are back in hut.

^Well thats a bit crap...rubbish final but overall not a bad show. Dinda went in as a replacement for Ashwin (who is with the seniors as Harbhajans replacement) They wisely opted to replace a spinner with a medium pacer, and the squads got just the one spinner in Piyush. Ludhz, Mandeep Singh sounds like a good player yeah. I think its hard for any of the U19 batsmen to have got in here though as there are some good young bats whove done well at Ranji and they need the exposure. If anything Netravalkar should have gone and Kumar should be with the tri-series squad in SL
