Sooda Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 ^yeah, in the post just above I raised the same point. Parthiv is a good batsman but possibly a bit unfair to expect him to both open and keep, seeing that it is his first proper ODI series in a while i.e. wherein he will be first choice keeper. They will force Kohli to open I am guessing., Did it ok in the past, of course it is not a great long term startegy. Ideally in my view they should have rested Gambhir; asked Yuvraj to captain and not picked one spinner and replaced them with Rahane and another opener...Uthappa has been ok if not outsstanding in the IPL, but has been batting far too low..maybe Mukund.,..I mean why not, a meaningless series versus a good but not great side... The larger point regarding the selectors, well I agree...they are not particularly good...it is actually pretty easy to select our first XI..everything else though they have shown no real vision or consistency--backup pacemen, backup spinners..even fringe batsmen to an extent...
ganeshran Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 ^ Yuvraj is a horrible captain. I would rather have Kohli lead the side if not Gambo or Dhoni
Chandan Posted May 13, 2011 Author Posted May 13, 2011 Once again the selectors had a chance to invest in a few young batsmen and bowlers keeping an eye on future and they failed miserably to grab that opportunity too. Selection of Saha, Vinay kumar and even Yusuf Pathan after his terrible showing in WC -- what purpose are they going to serve? Could we not have tested a young middle oder batsman here, either Rayudu or Rahane, a young seamer and another all rounder..any name you suggest? Not Yadav as he had got an opportunity and failed there.
Sid Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 I would agree with Chandan about the selection of Yusuf Pathan.Selectors could have selected any batsman in place of Pathan.

urbestfriend Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 I would agree with Chandan about the selection of Yusf Pathan.Selectors could have selected any batsman in place of Pathan. Well, I dont really blame selectors in keeping faith in Pathan. Remember he had a great series before the world-cup, he has done decently in the world-cup ( at least with the ball). You can't change and chop the players on one series failure. Players need little bit of assurance about their place for them to perform. Except Saha, who didn't have a great domestic tournament. team selection is fair.
saneindian Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 I would agree with Chandan about the selection of Yusf Pathan.Selectors could have selected any batsman in place of Pathan. Pathan did have a bad WC but given his all round performance against NZ and then in SA, he does deserve another chance. At number 6/7, at the moment we don't have any one better than him. Had a fairly decent domestic season with 375 runs@53 and 24 wickets@17 from 5 matches. Two surprising exclusions for me are Ojha and Tiwary. Both were with the team for almost every series last year, got few chances and now find themselves dumped from the team primarily based on IPL performances. That's slightly unfair IMO. If you pick a youngster, at least give him a few matches before dumping him.

Just tell me what purpose is Vinay Kumar's selection going to serve in India's future? Are we grooming him as 5th seamer? How long will he last? Is he good enough to play everywhere and every side?

He has not got much chances. We cannot discard a player after only 2-3 matches. Fast bowlers dont come overnight. They need persistence, especially when someone has a natural talent of pace like Yadav has. Creating a good pacer is a long process. Zak took5-6 years before he started delivering for India and when we lack fast bowling talent it is all the more important to nurture and conserve them. Dont what are they seeing in Vinay Kumar though.

The fact that despite having better pace and more experience, the team management decided to go for a rookie like Unadkat ahead of him in SA shows the confidence they had in his abilities. Another limiting factor with him is that in the last 12-18 months, he hasn't shown enough improvement. And that comparison with Zaheer is wrong. Zaheer took truckloads of wickets in his debut Ranji season and then announced himself in the very first ODI series he played in. Umesh on the other hand failed to grab his chances in Zimbabwe, hasn't done much in domestic cricket, did not do much on the India A tour and hasn't picked wickets in the IPL either. Just because you can bowl at 140+ doesn't mean you should be in the Indian team. He will, along with Varun, most likely get picked for India A now and its upto him to show the selectors what they are missing by picking up wickets consistently.
The Realist Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 Disappointing team selection with the same old failed players being recycled again. After the WC win and the resting of established players, it was the ideal time to try out some fresh talent and take some risks. If the selectors are not prepared to take risks against a very weak West Indies team, then one does wonder if they ever be innovative in their selections. A real opportunity wasted.

They did take risk once and we lost 2 matches to Zimbabwe. Cannot select a totally rookie squad. Then again, they did select some youngster in the NZ series and we won 5-0.

Has Kartik fallen so far down the wayside that he is not even 2nd choice ODI keeper? Wonder why...? Weve discussed Vinay Kumar before, but seriosuly, he has done is at FC level, lets give him a chance to show what he can do here, it is a pretty meaningless series. And the names you suggest instead- Nechim Ahmed, Aaron have really not achieved much at FC level all well be going by is a bit of raw promise. A few matches ago Yusuf hammered some pretty good centuries...but him aside no allrounders...:-P Unless you count Joginder and Nayyar...
Sooda Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 Parthiv has opened in the last 4 ODIs he has played for India. He has, I know, and done well too. All Im saying is let the guy keep and bat a bit lower to ease the burden on him. A specialist should open so we can groom him for the future to replace the Sachins and Sehwags...this is where Rahane would have been a good option

If the selectors are not prepared to take risks against a very weak West Indies team, then one does wonder if they ever be innovative in their selections. A real opportunity wasted. Completly agree. They have recycled the same old multiple times failurs back into the squad. Rohit Sharma. Please....he was so badly struggling in SA...that he was not selected for WC. What has he done between then & now....heck...even in IPL he is struggling. I am very sad for Rahul Sharma. IPL as BCCI says is a domestic tournament...& Indian selectors IMO missed a big trick by not selecting the in form Rahul Sharma. Probably Indian selectors want to know how Rahul Sharma will perform on dead Indian wickets bowling to droped Indian team failurs in Ranji for 3-4 years before deciding his Indian team fate
saneindian Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 He has' date=' I know, and done well too. All Im saying is let the guy keep and bat a bit lower to ease the burden on him. So being a keeper-batsman should not be tough for him as he is used to it. Plus if you don't play him as an opener where exactly does he slot in? Surely number 6/7/8 does not suit his style of play. So, for team balance and for his own good, opening the innings in ODIs is the best thing for Parthiv and the current Indian team. Rahane IMO should be first played in test. By playing him in shorter format first, he may end up a bit like Rohit, confused about his game and the role in the team.
Ultimate_Game Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 Decent team but disappointed about two selections... 1. Amit Mishra - Rahul Sharma should have been given a chance against WI. Generally I wouldn't go based on IPL performances but Rahul has been in such great form and considering he is very similar to Kumble makes him an ideal candidate especially against WI. He's at the peak of his confidence and what better team to blood a youngster than WI? 2. Wriddhiman Saha - I am sorry but the guy is not an intl class wk batsman. Maybe selectors should have gone with either Rayudu or Uthappa as I can't honestly see a batsman like Saha coming in at 6 for India. This will bring back memories of Mongia coming in at 6 :(( If selectors didn't want to go with Uthappa or Rayudu then Dinesh Karthik was a better choice than Saha. Hopefully Parthiv will play all the games and we won't see Saha strutting out at 6

Ishant was rubbish in his first test but then became better when he bowled to good batsmen. I think he will be picked for test series certainly. ZAK, ishant, Sreeshant, and Yadav will be for test matches.

[b']FC and ODI are different things. NO WAY :omg: I meant List A record mate, w.r.t to Kumar. Obviously. And whilst Kumar has done it over a few seasons Aaron has done it in one. Understand that difference. No way near enough to be rewarded with a senior call up. Im not suggesting Vinay will tear asunder through all batting lineups that dare cross his searing path, but just that he deserves a place in the squad far more than Aaron does.
