The Netherlands completed their most important victory of the summer – and perhaps in their history – when they beat Bangladesh by six wickets at Titwood on Tuesday in a rain-shortened ODI. The win, their first ever in an ODI against Full member opposition, enables them to join Ireland and Kenya on the ICC’s official one-day rankings, and gives the lie to any talk of restricting the top Associates’ access to this form of cricket. On the contrary, it is to be hoped that their admission to the top echelon of ODI-playing nations will pave the way for more fixtures against Full members. The heroes of Tuesday’s victory were Eric Szwarczynski, Bas Zuiderent and Wesley Barresi, who contributed the lion’s share of the runs as the Dutch chased down a target of 200 in 30 overs. The match did not get under way until 2:45 because of a wet outfield and further showers during the first part of the day, and was reduced to 30 overs a side. Mudassar Bukhari struck a mighty blow for his side after Peter Borren had won the toss and inserted Bangladesh, removing the dangerous Tamim Iqbal with his second delivery of the match. He added the wicket of Junaid Siddique four overs later, keeper Atse Buurman completing a second catch after the Bangladeshi batsman had hit 31 off just 19 balls. But then Imrul Kayes and Jahurul Islam took a heavy toll of the Dutch bowlers, reaching 132 for two off 17 overs before Borren swung things back in the Netherlands’ direction, first removing Jahurul for 41 and then, in his following over, dismissing Imrul for 52, made from 50 balls with five fours and a six, and Mushfiqur Rahim with successive deliveries. Suddenly Bangladesh were 139 for five, and it took all the experience of Mohammad Mahmudullah and Mashrafe Mortaza to get their total up to 199 for seven by the end of their allotted overs. Mark Jonkman picked up two wickets, but it was Borren, with three for 30 from his six overs, who was the key figure in the Dutch attack. Needing nearly seven an over, the Netherlands started in top gear, Szwarczynski playing the innings of his career so far, outscoring his opening partner Alexei Kervezee and racing to his seventh ODI half-century from just 40 deliveries. He reached 67 before his became the fourth wicket to fall, having hit seven fours and three sixes, and at 104 for four the Dutch challenge was in danger of faltering. Bas Zuiderent was now joined by Wesley Barresi, and with the more experienced Zuiderent playing a sheet-anchor role it was Barresi, in only his seventh ODI, who almost immediately went onto the attack, hitting a succession of boundaries and bringing his side to the brink of victory. The Bangladeshis’ best chance of stopping the rot came with 18 needed at a run a ball, when a mid-pitch mix-up presented them with a golden opportunity for a run out. But they muffed it, and thereafter the Dutch were unstoppable. Barresi immediately rubbed it in with a reverse sweep for four, and with seven balls to spare he ran the ball down to the third man boundary to bring his own score to 64, off 43 deliveries with 11 fours, and take his side past the winning post. Zuiderent remained on 35 not out. This win is even more significant than the World Twenty20 victory over England at Lord’s last year, even if it is unlikely to attract equal attention at home or abroad. But it asserts the value of the ICC’s High Performance Program in bringing the top Associates closer to their Full member rivals, and it is to be hoped that the KNCB will act quickly and decisively to take advantage of the new level its players have achieved
