Dhoni - the test batsman

There were some talks on the forum about Dhoni moving up to the number 6 slot. I called it a ridiculous suggestion given the fact that he might be a very good wicketkeeper-batsman, but is certainly not a top 6 batsman capable of playing innings that are expected of the top 6 in a batting line up. Here is a list of Dhoni's 50+ scores which have come under tough situations. Clearly, he is very good at driving home the advantage, but just does not fit the bill to dig the team out of holes as proper batsman should be capable of doing. This is not to knock down Dhoni's utility in the team as a number 7 or wicketkeeper-batsman. Just to show he is nowhere good enough to be a top 6 batsman : 110 - entered at 157/5 52 - entered at 182/5 53 - entered at 102/5 55 - entered at 163/5 57 - entered at 93/5 76* - entered at 145/5 64 - entered at 94/4 1 hundred and 6 50s in his career which can be described as coming in tough, pressure situations. Notice most of the 50s are also barely 50 run scores, nothing substantially big. As of present, Dhoni is not good enough to be a number 6 batsman and India just has to go into every test with 6 specialist batsmen.

The post seems to justify my point perfectly.

Away from home is where we need his bat more and he has failed to deliver there, he plays this tuk tuk knocks in odis now a days to score 50s, why cant he do it in tests. He has played 43 tests that is life time for some keepers. Batting at no 7 he has not played one solo match winning knock even Prior has scored more match winning knocks than him.I have not seen one solo effort where he has lifted the team on his own.He is always a supporting act more like what Ian Bell does for England.

bro , most top class test batsmen play at the most 6-8 match winnings in their whole career , so your expecting a little to much from a Wk/batsmen whos more of a ODI specialist ..Dhoni saved us a test match in england & he will probably few good innings in his career , anything more would be a bonus .

The last test match of the Border Gavasker Series, and the Mohali Match. Dont remember exactly. Had Dhoni not been There, India could have been in trouble.

Even Friking Kamran Akmal has 4 of such knocks all against us ironically, They were comparing him to Gilly.He is No1 in odi rankings and should be able to perform better than what he has done so far in his career in tests.

how often does our batting give him an opportunity to play those match winning innings in Tests ? in Kamrans case every second match his team is 60/5 kind of situation , so hes bound be successful once in a while . The lower you come down the order , lesser your chances of making an impact in tests .

I thk you have not seen or heard of following innings: 1. 148 vs pak in faislabad,india were in trouble at to save the follow on,he along with saved that match 2.76 crucial runs in lords test to save india and india went onto win the series,and whenever india has not lost first test in england ,they have won the series in england,so in that context he played a significant role in that series and followed it with 92 in oval 3.Ind vs pak 2007 ,delhi,india tottering at 92-5 and he sored a 57 and a century stand with laxman ti give india first innings lead and india won that match and series 4.He along with harbhajan got india out of the hole in final test at nagpur with crucial 50 and a 100 run stand and eventually india posted 380 as targert for aussies and aussies lost and made quick fire 92 and 50 in mohali test as well 5.The chennai test which we remember for sachins 100 and viru's blitz ,we forger we were in trouble in first innings 6-137 but he gor the half century and top scored with 57 and another crucial stand with harbhajan in that match to keep us within the reach of england 6.2009 ,ind vs nz,wellington test ,india in trouble again 204-6 but agian he along with bhajji got us out of trouble with 50s for both and set up the match for us 7.Ind vs slahmedabad test ,again india under pressure ,he scored a century and along with dravid who also made a great century made our score respectable in the first innings and followed it up with another century in the last match 8.Most recently the 100 vs sa to compltely shut the match from sa and shred a great partnership with laxman and carried on theb great work of viru and sachin So for me Dhoni has been a man for crisis and most of ther times he has delivered and this series has been a exception in that context where he has failed twice once getting out early in secon innings of first test and now this time,he will also be disappointed but to say that he has done nothing will make u aware wat he has done and please dont kamran akmal in this discussion ,he is not a wk ,plus he scores only against us ,so next time when you write make some sense

How are his knocks in Mohali crisis knocks, India could not have been placed better. all those knocks you have mentioned except lords some one else was also played equally important role in either saving or winning match. He averages 22 in the losses with one fifty that doesn't suggest man for crisis .
