Question for Indians - Karthik

He made a fine 90 odd runs against Pakistan in Kolkata. That's the best I have seen him bat. Apart from the evident potential, he is a very good team player too. It does no harm to have him in the squad, if he deserves it.

Personally I think he tries too hard to impress in an effort to cement his place in the team. It's the kind of phase that GG went through' date=' until he was given confidence about his position in the team. Though DK position is different, as if we field our full strength team, then the only potential weak spots we have is our no6 and maybe no5, where competition is severe.[/quote'] Yeh poor guy gets to fill in for others. He knows his performances don't mean too much, he'll be dropped when whoever he is filling in for is back. Maybe he'll get a decent run in the side at some point

DK is one of the few backup players that knows how to play the moving ball. He can adjust his game by batting out of the crease and playing the ball early to negate swing. He's a pretty good utility player (can open, bat in the middle and keep wickets) to have and a decent fielder.

Dinesh Karthik did decently as an opener in SA tests when we toured and struggled . he was ok in England tests when we toured too. but it is extremely tough on any one if one has to prove himself at every opportunity provided . thats very stressful.I feel he is no longer in the reckoning for a test opener slot as M.Vijay has out performed him recently when ever Gambhir was not available.Karthik's only option is in one dayers and he is not getting younger. would be tough for him to find a place after a season or two, especially if ,MSD continues to keep and lead the side.

Its basically a musical chairs competition b/w Karthik, Rohit Sharma and Kohli as to who’s the back up middle order batsmen. And all of them take turns to make a string of impressive scores and raise the collective hopes of all fans, only to disappoint later. Kohli looked to have cemented his position as the back-up middle order bat when he had hugely impressive run in B’desh, but has withered after that. Rohit came in with a bang in the 2008 CB series, flickered for a while, came back to make those back to back 100s he made recently in Zimbabwe, but he too is inconsistent. Karthik’s case a bit different because he has had some reasonable success as a lower order bat, anchoring the team to some good run-chase victories, but he too is sporadic, though he has been jostled around the order quite a bit. And just when you think he’s a lost cause, he’ll suddenly make a good score (like the MoM winning performance in the Asia cup..) But these three batsmen have a new, more formidable opponent in the form of Saurabh Tiwary. If one of the three don’t cement their place soon, its only a matter of time before he will take their place.

He is an excellent replacement player because he can fit into many roles as someone mentioned upthread. I dont think the selectors see him as anything more, tbh.

Useful player because of the variety of roles he can fulfil, but I can't see himself establishing himself in the team long term.

He looked good in England and opened pretty well (without setting the world alight), but since then he has been a flop who has been persisted with due to his versatility and lack of forsight by DHoni that while playing rubbish like Lanka we coulld have been testing Tiwary, Irfan Pathan, Uttahpha (you know the score!), especially with WC looming, hes not gona win us it.

Thank god we are comparing Karthik with Vijay here! I saw hundreds of posts on another forum saying that Vijay was much better than Gambhir in Tests. I literally skipped a few heart beats reading them.

Overrated. BTW, he didnt win the Asia cup. He top scored with a 66, sure. But almost every batsman got going and we posted a very good 268. He scored 25% of the runs at a below par SR. Not by any means is it a match winning performance. Nehra reduced Sri lanka from 50/2 to 51/5 and ended up with 4/40 in the match but lost out to karthik for MOM probably because by that time Zaheer and Praveen had already got the RRR near 6. There is a pattern here if you see all his high scores. His highest 79 came when India made 400 with Sachin getting 200 and Dhoni smased 60 odd in 30 balls. His next best 67 when india made 340. There is although 1 good innings of a 63 when India made just 189 and bowled out WI for 169. I am basing all this on pure stats because none of his innings is memorable. He is a limited player. Had a few decent innings in tets, ODI's and IPL but doesnt seem to be capable at all positions and situations. Reminds me a lot like Kaif.
