I am bit confused actually :hmmmm: Nuts or Burgers or both. Cholestrol - Shouldn't it be bad for health?
At your age, and weight, it is not either or, you can have both. Nuts, to me, are best ways of adding clean calories. They are super convinient to carry around. You can buy them everywhere. You can bring them to work and munch every few hours. They also contrain traces of proteins and some of them (almonds, pistchaios, pecans etc) have decent fibre as well. Plus your body always absorbs nuts without any issues. It is one thing to eat right, but also another that your body is absorbing the nutrients. Nuts go very well with almost everyone, if not everyone. The cholestrol from nuts are the good kind, you shouldnt feel any adverse affects unless you have already had some issues in which case check with the Doc.

Aparently its something called saturated fat and unsaturated fat. Docs say unsaturated fat is good for health. Like olive, sunflower oil and so on... Generally on each bottle of oil u will see the percentage of saturates vs unsaturates. However unsaturated turns into saturated fat at high temperature. So eating oil isnt that bad in salads. However same amount of oil used in some reciepe for purpose of frying is really bad. There are info available about which oil unsaturates turn into saturates at what temperature...

IIRC, There is no cholesterol in nuts ( walnuts, almonds etc).. or in any source of unsaturated fat from vegetable sources. They do help lower the LDL though (the baddie).

WTF!!!! May be you are referring to - Hydrogenation. Which is a different process. Just heating certainly does not turn unsaturated fat into saturated fats. Saturated fats come from animal sources ( egg yolks, ghee, meat...etc). Btw, some amount of Saturated fat is required in diet....for production of Testosterone ( and perhaps few other hormones).

Fat from Coconut is also supposed to be good .. Medium Chain Triglycerides.. are metabolised quicker than normal fat.. and hence source of 'instant' (almost) energy.

Yeah- thats why i switched; BP is not that bad- borderline so Dr. said staying away from certain foods will avoid medications so preferred. plus raisins i find yummy :-)
Quick update Lurker (& others); I think I am going to start eating the unsalted trail mix instead of all raisins or all nuts. I checked- there is no sodium ( so does not elevate BP) in this and it is a mix of roasted peanuts, some almonds, sunflower kernels and few raisins. There will still be some sugar (13 g in a 2 oz bag) cos of a few raisins but not as much as eating raisins alone as a snack (end up eating lot more). These also provide fiber and some protein- there is some fat but not too much saturated fat (2g in a 2 oz bag, 0g trans fat and 27 g unasturated fat). Total carbs 22 g (including the 13g sugar above) Does this seem alright? I can never figure out how low the sugar content should go; should one try to eliminate sugar completely in diet??

Related to sugar- any advise on fruit juice. I noticed Yoda advised against them- I am not a fan of concentrated juice and don't have a lot of those but some protein smoothies ( not home made but at restaurants) use conc. juice. Also lately I have been drinking "naked" juices which have a lot of veggies and fruits in them but sugar content can be a little high even though it is all natural and not added sugar or from concentrate. Of course I understand that fresh veggies or fruits are the best but sometimes it is just convienient to buy these juices or smoothies that provide veg/fruits or whey proteins but may contain higher sugar (natural or from concentrate). So is this much sugar bad- even if natural? (e.g. naked juice has 28 g of sugar in a serving)

Went through this thread and I require some help too. Age 26 Height 5' 10" Weight 52 Kgs (underweight) Goal To be cricket match fit and to put on weight, not much but just the right amount. I think my problem is my meals. I would like to know what meals I could have and the correct exercises to help me stay fit and put on weight.
Dude I'm just like you. 26 yrs. 5'8. 65 kgs. I used to be under 56 kgs rit till I was about 25 yrs. Things have changed for me since. So as of now I'm mostly lean mass. Pretty ripped. Definitely cricket player fit. I don't think I'm qualified to give you any advice, bit since we're in the same boat I thought I'd chip in with my thoughts. Firstly don't bother too much bout weight. Let's just stay focused on being fit. As far as weight's concerned just eat right. I know they say you gotta eat 5 meals a day etc etc. But let's face it all of us are not crazy bout eating. I recommend a good pre and post workout nutrition plan. And ur 4 main meals a day need to be good. Good breakfast. decent Lunch. Eat sometin for Tea and Dinner. Diet itself needs a lot of brainstorming and I too could use some help. But it's really not rocket science. As far as the workouts go, I'd really recommend you kick start a workout plan with a body-weight routine and only after two months of strong body weight and cardio workouts should you move to weights. Very quickly i'll state a few exercises I live by: Master these exercises and you will build that dream physique, I guarantee you. 1. Pushups (tons of variations) http://hundredpushups.com/ 2. Pull-Ups (you can do the basic version, but there are all kindsa of modifications you can add. Master the pullup and you'll want nothing more) 3. Burpees 4. Dips 5. Inverted Rows Cardio:- 1. I run thrice a week as fast as I can. So for the first run it's 1.5 miles. Second it's 2 miles. And on the third day it's 3 miles. The trick here is to run as fast as u can. I try and always complete each mile inside 10 minutes. But if I'm only running 1.5 miles then I can complete that distance in 12 mins. I actually can run a bit more. But it's summer here. So even these shorter runs really sap the life out of you. Occasionally I also play football. Like once a week. A piece of equipment I'm quite fond of these days :- http://www.trxtraining.com/ Food Items I'd recommend in Singapore:- 1. Eggs 2. Tinned Tuna 3. Olive Oil 4. Nuts (walnuts, almonds) 5. Toast 6. Peanut Butter ( I live of this) 7. Cold Cuts (Turkey) 9. Yogurt 10. Parmesan Cheese, Blue Cheese ( loaded with proteins.) 11. Fruits 12. Broccoli 13. For weight gain beer definitely helps With the exception of broccoli and eggs all the above items require no cooking and can easily be picked up off a supermarket shelf. When in doubt make sure these items are at hand. And you should be fine. If you wanna talk more bout workouts I do and the kinda food I eat, gimme a heads up. I'm sure we could brainstorm and discover a few cool tricks to help us in our quest. Cheers :two_thumbs_up:
