Abdullah's maiden ton puts Mumbai in control Yahoonews, PTI, 03 November 2010 Mumbai: Iqbal Abdullah struck his maiden century as Mumbai declared their first innings at a mammoth 580 for nine against Saurashtra at the end of second's day's play in their Group A Super League Ranji Trophy match here on Tuesday. Abdullah (150 not out) stitched a 167-run eighth-wicket stand with veteran Ajit Agarkar (80) to enable hosts Mumbai to the commanding score. When you are in the team as a bowler, seldom do you get a chance to bat in the nets against quality bowling. The chance to hold the bat comes only after the front-line batsmen have had their fill. By this time not only you but also the bowlers who have to bowl at you are tired. It’s no different for Mumbai left-arm spinner Iqbal Abdulla. But the Kurla boy has managed to overcome this handicap and how! The hosts further tighetened their grip on the match by grabbing two Saurashtra wickets while conceding 94 runs when stumps were drawn. Earlier, resuming at the overnight score of 340 for seven, Mumbai added another 240 runs as Abdullah and Agarkar took complete control of the proceedings. The fear of Mumbai failing to cross the psychological barrier of 400 was a real one. The late-order batsmen started with a flurry of boundaries to begin the day. The new ball was taken in the third over of the day but Abdulla hit Jaidev Unadkat for two boundaries in the first four balls with it. The duo brought about the fifty for the eighth wicket in just 65 balls. “The approach in the morning was simple: be cautious but don’t miss out on the bad balls,” said Abdulla. Being aggressive The diminutive batsman had little respect for Unadkat’s speed as he stroked him over his head for a six and often used the pace to steer past third-man. Abdulla almost took Agarkar’s head off as he hit left-arm spinner Rakesh Dhruv straight down. The only time that the bowlers came close to dismissing him was when ’keeper Sagar Jogiyani dropped him off the bowling of Ravindra Jadeja. The pair added 165 runs for the eighth wicket before Agarkar (80) played Jayesh Odedra straight into Jadeja’s hands. Abdulla though completed his maiden Ranji Trophy ton in 137 balls punctuated with 11 fours and three sixes. When asked when does he get time to work on his batting, he said, “Once the nets are over, I stay back and practice as if there are fielders placed in the field. This gives me an idea about where I am going wrong. Both captain Wasim Jaffer and coach Praveen Amre keep telling that I have the capability to score big runs.” In the last season, too, Abdulla had three fifties to his name. His performance with the ball too was special as he picked 32 wickets at an average of 26.73. “Abdulla is kind of floater. His role changes with the situation and the wicket. He is capable of doing both the attacking and restrictive role and he has proved it over the years. His coming good with the bat is a huge bonus for him and Mumbai,” said coach Amre. Agarkar batted for nearly three and half hours for his knock of 80 (205m, 175b, 4x11), before he was dismissed by Jayesh Odedara, who finished with figures of three for 110. However, Abdullah was in no mood to stop and added another 63 runs for the last wicket with Avishkar Salvi (12 not out) to ensure that Mumbai crossed the 575-run mark, while also notching up his first century in first-class cricket. His innings of 150 not out, which lasted for nearly four and half hours, came in just 196 balls and was studded with 14 boundaries and three hits over the fence. Saurashtra bowlers never looked like taking a wicket. Abdulla then pushed the accelerator harder. Abdulla smacked Jaidev Unadkat for a six at deep mid-wicket off his first ball of an over. The fourth ball of the same over was pulled on the back foot straight to the sight screen by the Azamgarh lad. It was a forgettable day for the Porbandar left-arm pacer who missed out on his first Ranji wicket when Agarkar’s was dropped in the slips. His overall analysis read a sorry 116 runs conceded of 32 overs. For Saurashtra, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja scalped four wickets but at cost of 189 runs. In reply, off-spinner Romesh Powar struck two vital blows removing opener Chirag Pathak (47) and experienced Sitanshu Kotak (0) to ensure that the visitors, who trail by 486 runs, face an uphill task to avoid an embarrassment. Pushing for a win With runs on board and time in hand Mumbai always knew that they had a chance to push for an outright win. Getting Saurashtra to bat after declaring for 590/9, Mumbai got their act together in the last hour of the day. Powar got sweet revenge by getting rid of a dangerous looking Chirag Pathak, caught at short cover. Such was Pathak’s dominance that when he got out, the score was 59 of which 47 came from the southpaw’s willow. He was particularly harsh on Powar, smacking him for a six and a four in one over and then hitting two consecutive boundaries in the offie’s another during his 63-ball stay. After Pathak was gone, Powar had Sitanshu Kotak caught at silly mid-off for a duck heralding energised celebrations from Powar and teammates. Their hopes were given a huge boost when off-spinner Ramesh Powar dismissed Kotak for a duck. Kotak has always been a rock in Mumbai’s path whenever the two sides have met. Bhushan Chauhan (29 not out) and Jadeja (16 not out), will resume the innings for Saurashtra tomorrow. On Tuesday morning, they didn't have to wait long for it as Sumit Narwal rose to the occasion and picked up three quick wickets to halt Bengal's charge. Narwal's spell breathed a new lease of life into the Delhi attack and they bowled out Bengal for 473 - a decent effort considering that the visitors were 313 for two at the end of Day 1 of their Ranji Trophy Elite Division Group A tie. Delhi finished the day at 89 for 1, with Virat Kohli (51no) and Shikhar Dhawan (33no) holding the fort. If the Delhi camp is to be believed, a change of the ball, which happened as early as in the second over of the first day, upset the rhythm of their medium pacers so much they looked ordinary. The only two wickets which fell on Monday were to the spin of skipper Mithun Manhas. The replacement 'new ball' didn't have the same "balance and feel" as the one picked at the start of the game, which immediately lost its shape. Delhi coach Manoj Prabhakar, a shrewd and masterful medium pacer in his heydays, said he had reason to believe that the replacement ball, 'that didn't feel right', cost his bowlers a good start. Colourless on Day One, the Delhi bowlers dominated Day Two's first session, using the second-new ball which was just three deliveries old on Tuesday, after failing to extract anything from a fresh wicket a day earlier. In a game dominated by the batsmen, Parvinder Awana and Sumit Narwal bowled exceptionally before lunch to bag four wickets and leave the visitors at 357 for six. Left-arm pacer Pradeep Sangwan gave away just 17 runs in his first eight overs. But a 98-run partnership for the seventh-wicket between Wriddhiman Saha and Saurasish Lahiri prevented a collapse, allowing Bengal to finish their innings on 473. The Delhi bowlers hit the right line and length from the outset and the rewards didn't take long in coming. Parwinder Awana started a mini collapse, removing overnight century-maker Arindam Das for 156. Narwal then got down to business and dealt three telling blows in quick time to reduce Bengal to 357 for six. A defiant 98-run partnership between Wriddhiman Saha and Saurasish Lahiri helped Bengal reach the total they eventually did. As the bowlers bowled in the right areas, the wicket that had looked pretty listless the previous day showed some life and better bounce. But the day was all about Delhi's medium pacers, who put behind their first day struggles to surprise the Bengal batsmen and bringing about a welcome change to the proceedings. In a space of 13 overs, between the 93rd to 105th, four wickets fell. The seemingly lifeless wicket at the Ferozeshah Kotla Stadium appeared to have suddenly sprung to life, with the bowlers finding assistance both off the wicket and in the air. The Delhi attack benefitted by pitching the ball up and ensuring that they bowled with a seam-up position, as much as they enjoyed the "balance and feel" of the second new ball. Arindam Das, overnight on 150, could add only six runs to his tally before Awana got the ball to jag back sharply and knock out the off-stump. Showing how bowling the right line and length, with some serious pace, can make bowlers menacing even on pitches which are batsmen-friendly, Awana jumped in the air and pumped his fist at Das's departure, but there was more reason to celebrate when Narhwal picked up three wickets in a four-over spell that cost just nine runs. Bengal skipper Manoj Tiwary, who batted fluently on Monday, was time and again beaten by the movement of the ball. After surviving a close leg-before-wicket, Tiwary paid the price of playing across the stumps too often to give Narwal his first wicket. Laxmi Ratan Shukla and Anustup Majumdar too couldn't counter a red-hot Narhwal � Shukla was bowled while Majumdar edged to wicketkeeper Punit Bisht. However, lack of support from Chetnya Nanda, the lone specialist spinner in the squad, allowed Bengal to get back into the game before Rajat Bhatia polished off the tail. Delhi coach Manoj Prabhakar said they were done in by a replaced ball the previous day. “The original ball went out of shape, and our bowlers struggled to grip the replaced ball, which was chosen by the umpires," Prabhakar said. Before Trivedi entered the ground, Railways had done all the hard work and had Gujarat on the ropes at 298/8. But just when it was looking that the hosts were in the driving seat, their plans went haywire. With Krishnakant Upadhyay, who took three wickets, concentrating mostly on bowling short pitched deliveries, all Trivedi had to do was swing and connect. In 68 minutes, Trivedi scored a 57-ball 65 that included 11 hits to the fence and Railways grip on the match had slipped. Trivedi's partner Salil Yadav opted to duck or swaying away from the short balls. Old hand Sanjay Bangar tried his hand at the short stuff but to no avail. "All fast bowlers bowl short to tailenders. So I kind of expected it," Trivedi said after the end of days play. Trivedi was equally effective when the ball was pitched up to him. He played a few fine cover drives to shatter Railways hopes. With wickets falling from the other end, Trivedi made up his mind to up the scoring rate. "Bhavik and Prathmesh partnership got us a very good platform after that we needed quick runs so I had made up my mind to go for runs. I would have got out cheaply had I tried my hand at blocking. Thankfully it paid off today," the 28-year-old added. Trivedi was happy for setting up the match for his team after his two-wickets in the last session had pegged the Railways team even further. "It was very important for us to use the new ball well. Because once it gets old batsmen get comfortable, like the way TP (Singh) was playing after the wickets fell. I dismissed two of their top order batsmen and we have the advantage is with us." Railways were 20/2 as Trivedi returned to peg them back. Opener Faiz Fazal walked back to the pavilion in the first over and Bangar followed soon. V Cheluvuraj held forte for 66 balls for his 13, was the last wicket to fall on the day. Earlier, Railways got through the defences of specialist batsmen, including that of Thaker and Parmar, late in the first session, to break the momentum. Overcoming its batting debacle of the opening day, Baroda managed to move from 99 for 9 to collect a total of 148 runs in the first innings as R K Solanki remained unbeaten with a dazzling 87 aided by 12 hits to the fence. Solanki drew immense support from a patient Bhargav Bhatt who stuck around for 98 minutes and faced 55 balls to collect six runs before getting caught behind by S D Sahoo off B B Samantray. Despite losing two quick wickets of Captain S S Das (1) and N J Behera (13), Orissa managed to establish an impressive lead in first innings as opener Natraj Behera mustered 55 which included eight shots to the boundary before he was caught behind by P R Shah off A K Argal. Sathish put Tamil Nadu in a commanding position at the end of day two of its Ranji Trophy Elite Group ‘A' match against Assam here on Tuesday. Starting the day at 21 for no loss in response to Assam's 184, the host was 300 for four when stumps were drawn. The thrust that took Tamil Nadu to its end-of-day total came from a fourth-wicket partnership of 135 between Badrinath and Sathish. When the two came together five overs after lunch, Tamil Nadu had suffered twin setbacks. Minutes after opener S. Anirudha retired hurt with a cramp on 71, skipper Dinesh Karthik fell cheaply, caught behind after chasing a wide one from seamer Ranjeet Mali.

KKD fell cheaply chasing a "wide one" - not surprising, he is prone to such lapses of concentration. He more often than not wastes his opportunities. Good on Badrinath - the steady player for TN and R. Satish and Anirudha for helping them reach a decent position of 300/4 :two_thumbs_up:

u r wrong...there own medium pacer Alfred Absolem swings it quite a lot...he too took 6 wickets on his FC debut a few years back..even he has taken 6 wickets in an ICL T20 match...though Absolem is quite slow 120-125ish, but he too swings the bowl magnificently.....
