Mumbai (21 points) and Karnataka (20 points) are through to the QF. Now in Group A, TN (14), Delhi (13), Gujrat (13) and Bengal (12) all will fight for 2 QF places depedning on the result of their last match. The fixtures are : TN vs Gujrat at Chennai Delhi vs Mumbai at Delhi Railways vs Bengal at Delhi In Group B, Baroda (14), UP(14) and Haryana (12) will be fighting for 2 places in the QF. Fixtures are: UP vs Karnataka at Kanpur Haryana vs Orissa at Rohtak Baroda vs HP at Baroda For the last round of Ranji matches, TN will have Ashwin back, Delhi will have Kohli (and hopefully Nehra too) and Gujrat will have their captain Parthiv leading them again. In group B, Baroda will welcome back Yusuf and Munaf. The last round from Dec 15-18 is going to be quite fascinating to follow.

It will be a do-or-die match for Delhi in their bid to qualify for the knock-out stage. Virat, who hit back-to-back centuries for Delhi against Bengal and Tamil Nadu before leaving for national duty will certainly bolster the batting line-up that lacked firepower during their 22-run defeat against Railways. While Virat comes in place of an out-of-form Aditya Jain, regular skipper Mithun Manhas who was out with a groin injury is back in place of Mohit Sharma. The other change in the side is speedster Parwinder Awana who will replace an injured Kapil Yadav. Meanwhile Delhi coach Manoj Prabhakar termed stand-in captain Shikhar Dhawan's mistimed pull-shot as "unpardonable" and blamed the lack of application from the other batsmen being the reasons for Delhi's shock defeat. Shikhar was the first batsman to be dismissed on Friday when he went for a needless pull-shot only to be caught by Harshad Rawle at mid-on. "That shot was unpadonable. I only hope that Shikhar learns from this mistake and doesn't repeat it in the matches to come. I am disappointed that our batsmen didn't show the application required for batting on this track," a furious Prabhakar told reporters on Saturday. The disappointment was more evident when he said, "I can at the most guide them. When they are out there on the field, it's their job to execute the plans. They can't expect to be spoonfed. To play the moving ball, you need to have correct technique. "All these boys have now played first-class cricket for three to four seasons. They should be aware about their responsibilities." Former India all-rounder JP Yadav feels that getting Shikhar Dhawan out early helped their cause. "When Shikhar played that shot, we felt that we are in with a chance. The rest of the batsmen suddenly became confused as to whether they should attack or defend. And if you start defending, then you would take 70 overs to score those runs. And on this kind of a track, you won't last that long," was JP's assessment about Delhi's performance.

Close fight for knock-out slots from Group A in Ranji Trophy PTI, Dec 13, 2010 NEW DELHI: As the teams brace up for the final round of Ranji Trophy Super League encounters starting from Wednesday, their will be intense battle among five group A teams vying for two quarterfinal slots. With Mumbai and Karnataka having already qualified for the last eight stage from Group A and B respectively, one can expect some keen contests for the remaining four slots that are up for grabs. The last two slots will be taken by Plate Group semifinal winners. The battle is likely to go down to the wire in Group A where five teams -- Tamil Nadu (14 points from 6 games), Delhi (13 from 6 games), Gujarat (13 from 6 games), Bengal (12 from 6 games) and Railways (11 from 6 games) will be fighting out for the two slots. Among the other two teams, Assam (8 from 6 games) will hope that they atleast get a point against Saurashtra (5 from 6 games) in order to remain in the Elite group. It was Delhi's shock defeat against the Railways that has thrown the group wide open. Delhi, who will be playing arch-rivals Mumbai at the Roshanara ground would hope that they can manage an outright win (five points) which will take them to 18 points. That certainly will assure them a place among the top eight. In case, Delhi manage only three and finish with 16 points, then they will have to wait for the results of the Tamil Nadu vs Gujarat and Railways vs Bengal clash. If Tamil Nadu manage an outright win they are straightaway through to next round but even if they get three to collect 17 points they stand a good chance of qualifying. In case of Gujarat, they would try and secure an outright win as three points would mean they would be tied on 16 points with Delhi. For Railways to qualify, they simply need an outright win and hope that Mumbai and Tamil Nadu take first innings lead against Delhi and Gujarat respectively. While Purkayastha, who was in and out of the state under-22 team earlier this season on disciplinary grounds, has replaced left arm spinner Prakash Bhagat, while Sinha has replaced wicketkeeper Rajdeep Das. The team was named late last evening. Assam will have to hold the hosts at least to a draw to survive in the elite group. Assam are placed seventh in the tally with eight points and Saurashtra at the bottom with only five points in their kitty. Selection committee sources said Purkayastha has been named keeping in view the wicket condition at Rajkot. “It has been a batting-friendly wicket at Rajkot so far. But we can expect any adverse condition in the last tie because the hosts will have nothing to lose. In such a situation, Purkayastha could be handy with the bat as well as with the ball,” one of the selectors said. Purkayastha is one of the most experienced offspinners who could give able support to Arlen Konwar in a turning track. “Sinha has been called in to strengthen the batting line-up if they retain the batting track for the match,” the selector added. Coach Subhrajit Saikia was also expecting “any kind of adverse condition” at Rajkot, “as they have nothing to lose”. Bengal, who are lying at the fifth place with 12 points in Group A, are looking for an outright win against sixth placed Railways, who have 11 points, to qualify for the quarterfinals. Railways are also high on confidence after beating Delhi in their last match. With all their previous six matches ending in draws, Tiwary knows that it will be a tough task, but not impossible. 'I saw the wicket today and they (Railways) have prepared a spinning track that will assist left-arm spinner Murali Kartik. But our spinners have also done well and, hopefully, we will get a result from this match,' the Bengal captain told IANS. Asked if the six draws will haunt Bengal, Tiwary said: 'I can't help it. All the matches that we played till now were on dull pitches, not enough to have a result. Such tracks don't help teams to pick up 20 wickets in a match and if you don't, it is tough to get outright wins.' Tiwary said that the team has played well in all the matches, except against Mumbai and Assam. 'We made a good start in the league and have played well as a unit in all the matches. UP are not safe , their last match is against Karnataka ...if they lose this & Haryana even manage a innings lead against Orissa , they are out ...this is quite possible

Delhi If Delhi had made another 23 runs at the Roshanara Club, they would have already made it through to the knockout stage. Their shock defeat has, instead, opened up the group. Now they need to beat defending champions Mumbai outright, at the same venue, and the seaming surface won't make their task any easier against an attack that includes Ajit Agarkar and Aavishkar Salvi. A first-innings lead will leave them hoping that at least one of two other matches - Tamil Nadu v Gujarat and Bengal v Railways - ends in a stalemate. If only the first game is drawn, they would not want TN to take the first-innings lead. Tamil Nadu Second-placed TN will have an eye on the Chennai weather that has wreaked havoc on their home-heavy schedule. They have played five of their six games so far in Chennai, and three of those have been hampered by rain. Even the first innings could not be completed on two occasions, and TN will hope the clouds stay away against Gujarat. An outright win will see them through. Even the first-innings lead will put them in a comfortable position, unless Delhi beat Mumbai and Bengal or Railways get a bonus-point victory. Gujarat They would need to defeat TN. The first-innings lead would suffice if Bengal and Railways play out a draw and Mumbai at least take the lead against Delhi. Baroda A first-innings lead over Himachal Pradesh should do for Baroda, except if UP beat Karnataka, and Haryana thrash Orissa by a bonus point. A one-point return or a loss could still see them through, if UP or Haryana stutter as well. Uttar Pradesh The lead alone will not do for UP if there is a three-way tie on 17 points between them, Baroda and Haryana. In that case, the latter two will proceed on account of more outright wins. If Haryana are unable to win against Orissa, UP could be through even if they concede the lead to Karnataka, for they have a better runs-to-wickets quotient at the moment.
