Rahul Dravid - A little observation

I distinctly remember the particular series from where Dravid started struggling, the same series where Tendulkar made a comeback from his shoulder surgery - DLF Cup, 2006. He did recover from his bad patch in 2009, but this year he has been once again very mediocre. Ever wondered how much Dravid averaged at the peak of his career? He averaged 58.75 at the time of Tendulkar's comeback from his shoulder surgery. Interestingly, I don't think Tendulkar in his entire career averaged that match, although he did average almost 58 at a time when it was far more difficult to achieve an average of 50. After today's dismissal, Dravid now averages 52.64:omg: Just have a look at his downward spiral - from 58.75 to 52.64 in 4 years time.

Nope, I dont think so. He averaged 58,5 in 2004, I think that was his peak average.

His average remained consistently around 57.9 all that time.

There was a time When RD was batting Beter than Goddy for 2-3 Years. So its not an absolute BS IMO. But God is incomparible.

Dravid's really had a shocking decline the last 4 years. His last great Test series was India's tour to WI back in '06. It's been all downwards since and he has managed to stay a part of the team purely on reputation.

Ponting's fell from 60 (59.99 to be precise) durinng Ashes 06-07 to 54.5 (last test match)... in about 4 years... Even more astonishing was Ponting's avg shot up from 50 in 2002 to 60 by 2006 :woot:

I always wonder why Dravid resigned from captaincy. I think he was batting well during his captaincy and after that he has been going downhill. so what was the real reason behind giving up captaincy? Anyone has any explanation?

Dravid averages 44 as captain... His initial form as captain was pretty good, but tailed off considerably post 2006 season... ie, 2006-07 and 2007 was really bad, plus India's dismal perf in WC 07 accentuated his unwillingness to continue at the helm...

Agree with both! Just to add - I wouldn't expect more than a draw in the case where Dravid is the leading run scorer. :giggle:

Dravid case is carbon copy of Hayden's last few years. Age caught up with him, lost that midas touch but selectors kept on selecting him hoping for the old form to return which never happened. Hayden was wise enough to quit just before his average fell below the 50th mark. Lets see how long more Dravid takes to take the right decision.

I find it BS that a player deserves to make his own call to quit. If a selector thinks a player is beyond his useful date, he must be dropped no matter what their past contribution is. Currently, the selectors feel that Dravid still has it in him to contribute to the team, which he has although at a much less than reliable rate than we are used to. Personally, I would have preferred if he had quit a few years ago after he resigned from Captaincy and opened up a slot for one of the new comers.

Yes, he is lacking in form but remember Form is temporary but class is permanent. We need him for the tour of SA later this year and may be for WC 2011 and a test series or two beyond that in Carrebean and England in summer of 2011. I do think that Rahul Dravid has some final flourish to expound before retiring and then we will have two youngsters along with SRT and VVS to make the team. Those two will become reasonably senior before both the last of the stalwarts call it their day. Then we have the next generation of cricketers. So, lets wait first for the "Final Flourish" of Rahul Dravid before he retires....

I am not so sure about the "Final Flourish", but given that he is still in the team we all ofc want him to flourish. All the best to RD.
