Sourav Ganguly's legacy or the lack of it as the Captain of India

Would it be an under-statement if I say ganguly singlehandedly fracked up VVS's career? Did he really deserve to bat a notch higher than the talisman?

Very Much Ill Informed your Knowledge is. Why just Blame Ganguly for that? Dravid and Kumble did the same too. Then why not Say in the same breath Ganguly, Rahul and Kumble frecked up VVS's career. And it seems you have only the bad things in store for Ganguly, how about saying how one of the Best Openers of 2002-2003 brought himself down the order in ODI cricket to accomodate Sehwag and Freck up his own career? Every captain has done somthing bad and Good for his team. No one is a saint. Sourav Ganguly is remembered for the Good things he did for India more than some silly assumptions of Yours.

Andy some of your points on Dada moving down for Sehwag as an opener seem factually incorrect to me. That move had got something to do with Dada's own form as well as Sehwag grabbing the chance to open by doing well. Sehwag became an opener when Sachin was missing from the tour of SL in 2002. Also before Sehwag was sent as an opener, Yuvraj Singh was sent in as an opener along with Dada, but failed in the 2-3 chances and then only as a desperatae measure, Sehwag (who till then was batting at 6,7,8) was then moved up the order which worked wonderfully for us. Sachin returned to the team during the 2002 tour of ENG, was pushed down the order to no. 4 and batted there for the entire tournament. Sachin again missed most of the ODIs after that series and during that period Sehwag and Ganguly continued to open the batting for us including that disastrous NZ tour. In fact even during the WC , in the first two matches Ganguly and Sachin opened for us, Ganguly could not do much in those matches and then from the 3rd match onwards Sehwag and Sachin opened. So for nearly 9 months, Sehwag and Dada both were the regular openers for us, during which time Sehwag established himself as a fearless attacking batsman in ODIs. Leading to the WC, Sehwag was in a much better form than Dada and after that disastrous loss vs the Aussies in the 2nd match of the WC, Sehwag went back to become the side's opener again which in a way changed the fortunes for us. Obviously Dada does deserve the credit for sending Sehwag to open and telling him you are going to open even if you fail for 10-12 innings. But IMO the primary reason partly was Dada's own form and also Sehwag's rich batting form.

Out of 5 2 of them were because RD was opening the Batting and we needed a No 3 Bat in Aus. Agreed on that, If he had to freck up Career he wont have send in Sehwag ahead of him. He could have continued to do what so many Captains did with VVS. Am not here to give credit to what he did for Sehwag, Bhajji, Zak, Yuvi. Knowledgeble cricket fans know that. People who were pointing fingers at him must point out some of his good moves too. Everyone makes one or two mistakes, But while higlighting his mistakes and accusing him of frecking Careers people should give credit to him for making few careers too. Though i dont belive SG frecked up his Career and Made Sehwags Career.

People questioning Saurav's legacy should look at these points before making this judgement.I think that his contribution as a captain to Indian cricket is unparallelled and today as a Sporting unit we are what we are Thanks to him. 1)He took over the reigns of the Indian team during the whole match fixing fiasco at the beginning of the millenium.His captaincy was a breath of fresh air which gave the public a new hope. 2)He definetely played a huge role in the change of public perception that if Sachin is out then it's all over for India throughout the 90's to Team India can also do without Sachin. 3)He was the first captain to instill self-beleif that India can do well abroad. 4)He was 100 times a leader than Azharuddin ever was. 5)Harbhajan,Yuvraj,Sehwag,Kaif,Zaheer all flourished under his captaincy.Have we ever had a pool of talent of this caliber groomd under any other captain 6)His agressive and attacking leadership was never ever seen in Indian cricket history uptill that point.Yes,I agree this resulted in some obnoxious moments like Zaheer in 2003 or Saurav removing his shirt on the lords balcony but they symbolised that Indians are not going to take it lying down. I want to clarify one thing ,I am not from Kolkatta or neither I am a Bengali.

Tell you somthing the most Die Hard Sourav Fans i met happens to be from states other than Bengal and mostly Non-Bengalis. For instance am not a Die Hard sourav fan, so couldnt give enough facts counter the arguemnt how Sourav Played politics and Destroyed Careers of Legends like SRT, RD, VVS etc etc and the list goes on.

Just an incident I wanted to share. People from Kolkata wil lknow the 'Douglas Math' near Behala Chowrasta. Ganguly sometimes used to come to practise here and play in local matches as his house is very close to it. I have seen him and aslo talked to him here. Don't know whether he still does. This was when he was the captain of the Indian team I was watching this match at the ground. It was a small local match with very young guys. Ganguly's team was chasing with Dada at the crease. They needed 18 to win off two balls and a spin bowler was bowling. This was a konckout match for both teams to make it to the next stage. Dada walked up to the bowler, said something right in front of the umpire. The bowler overstepped the mark by a huge margin on the next two balls which were also slow, juciy full tosses. So was the third one. Three sixes and Dada's team won :--D
