ravishingravi Posted November 20, 2010 Author Posted November 20, 2010 LOL 125/7 and yet some people can't stop moaning!! Well I don't merely go by the scorecard. We are playing the no. 8 team which was just recently whitewashed by minnows. So, one has to assess weakness based on what can be exposed against a better opposition in different conditions.
ravishingravi Posted November 20, 2010 Author Posted November 20, 2010 Care to enlighten us please which ODI series was this? Oh and BTW during exactly those two years when MSD has been committing the crime of being a poor captain team India has remained almost unbeatable!! Another thing, how many if the catches went to the short mid wicket, short cover, 2nd slip fielders? Wonder where those guys came from when if one was to believe you, they were all on the boundary line!! 1) In that particular ODI series where I first noticed that Dhoni was not aware of the concept of attacking the new man in. He basically maintained his spread out field while his counterpart Ponting did the opposite and made Indian batsmen panic and win the series which was also pointed out by Warne " Shane Warne said that Dhoni was not aggressive enough in the series and let opportunities slip by. He even added that Punter outcaptained Dhoni in the series and that was the key reason behind India's downfall against Australia." 2)Can you enlighten me where all India have played in this unbeaten streak ? 3):haha: Sorry but I have nothing to offer here

OK so in "that" ODI series, despite all of Punter's heroic captaincy, the matches we lost were lost by 9 runs, 3 runs etc. A difference of 12 runs and the series result would have been different. But yeah Punter was very aggressive as he could save those 12 runs while Dhoni was a crap captain as Indian tail could not manage 17 runs in 4 overs in a particular match or our famed lineup could not chase down 250 on a good Mohali pitch when we were leading the series 2-1!! And there was a small matter of our leading batsmen being off form throughout that series (Sehwag, Yuvraj, Gambhir, Kohli all averaged in 20s)..But you are right it was foolish captaincy that lost us the series 2. What has "where we play" got to do anything when you are discussing Dhoni's captaincy. If he has been a crap captain all these years as you say, then shouldn't we have been losing series after series like the ODI series in point 1? 3. Are you laughing at yourself? On day 1 of a test match, after losing the toss and losing the side's main strike bowler, we still have the oppostion at 148/7. And if you think just because they are number 8 and hence you can roll them over, it doesn't exactly work that way.
jusarrived Posted November 20, 2010 Posted November 20, 2010 How the fate of an Indian cricket star changes. As soon as your tactics dont work a few times' date=' there will be thousands telling you how to do your job.[/quote'] The funny thing is , its the very same Dhoni critics who keep reminding us how crap our bowling is ...but when it comes to his captaincy , hes supposed to attack on these flat pitches with 5 slips and 3 closing in fielders , like we have Marshal ,Mcgrath , Akram & Warne to bowl for us .

The really funny thing is that clowns like the OP don't even believe India are the number 1 team and have written reams of rubbish about it, but when it suits their agenda have no compunction pronouncing this as a series between #1 and 8.
Ram Posted November 20, 2010 Posted November 20, 2010 It seems as though there's no dearth of people who have probably played very little or no team sports of even a pseudo-competitive nature, but are absolutely unabashed about giving their 'expert' comments about the same. Of course, you dont have to be an expert on the game to comment on it, but if all you understand of the game is what you make out by watching t.v, then it will invariably show up in your comments.

Ofcourse resorting to cricketing logic and overlooking rankings will elude the starved for success Indian fans from orgamsic feeling of calling themselves the "best" in the world. I, also want that feeling, except after we become the very best. Btw what agenda ? While the ranking are not perfect, a team that sucks still sucks and at No.8 is down to its lack of wins, which is far cry from saying that the team at the top is undisputably No.1 team in the world. Lets not use the rankings, if you like, NZ team will still suck. Clearly you did not follow my points on No.1 team status.

And if you think just because they are number 8 and hence you can roll them over, it doesn't exactly work that way. 1.Not just me. Ask Shane Warne. "Shane Warne said that Dhoni was not aggressive enough in the series and let opportunities slip by. He even added that Punter outcaptained Dhoni in the series and that was the key reason behind India's downfall against Australia. " Yeah he is an aussie but he knows a thing or two about captaincy. Let me clarify, that when I saw Dhoni captain India for the first time in Mohali, I thought like many commentators on the day that he will be India's best captain. Btw the averages and margins are hardly relevant when we working out his tactical aptitude. Did he do a good job or not ? Was his counterpart better or not with almost a second string team? If the answer is yes, then I expect Dhoni to do better. 2.When I am judging his success as captain, then it is completely relevant. I am not goiing by mere w/l ratio. Like I said in OP, India has done well under Dhoni, but it is also a fact that India has played only one test series out of sub continent in last 2 and half years i.e. in NZ which isn't the toughest challenge with their current squad. I don't have a position set in concrete, if Dhoni does well in Aus. and SA, I would be more than happy to acknowledge it. 3. Really No Comments.
gaurav92 Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 I never rated him as the best captain. He is average player be it with his batting or with his captaincy.I think he is as good as the team.If we were without Sachin, Sehwag, Laxman and Dravid, we would have never been no.1 side in the world.Dhoni's captaincy hasn't done any wonders for our team.

There is however even greater dearth of people who can present a reasonable counter point. Ofcourse resorting to knee jerk reaction and personalizing the discourse is more comfortable way of dealing with the discussions as can be seen from the thread.

He adds that balance to our side which we lacked over the years. IMO.

vaibhav_delhi Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 I agree with only that. Dhoni was chosen the captain of ICC's test team for the year.

'Cricket' with 'friends'? Dont know whats that supposed to mean, but once again, here's the answer - Last weekend. :P
