Kochi franchise gets green signal, to play in IPL 4

New Delhi: Continuing their strong stand against the IPL Kochi franchise, the BCCI is likely to scrap the Kerala-based team after its owners failed to resolve their differences. Sources told CNN-IBN that the new IPL franchise is likely to be scrapped by the BCCI due to an ownership row. The Spat between franchise owners has reached an 'irreconcilable' position," sources said adding, "The four share-holders don't want Rendezvous to operate with 25 per cent sweat equity." "Share-holders want Rendezvous to bring investments worth 25 per cent sweat equity." It is also learnt that former minister of state for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor in an attempt to resolve the crisis has called for a meeting. However, the warring group is unlikely to meet Tharoor to resolve the differences. "It would be truly tragic if the team were disqualified because you all were unable to follow through on your commitments to each other and to the cricket-loving public. It is not too late to save the day, but it is perilously close to becoming unsalvageable. I urge you to act with wisdom and statesmanship at this time rather than allow all the effort and expense already made to go to waste," said concerned Tharoor.

She already has. This has to do with the partner itself who has 25% equity without putting any money. It is from this, that Tharoor's GF got her share.

I hate how bunch of people bring their money together to own a team, all for marketing themselves. BCCI should implement a rule by having no more then 2-3 shareholders in every IPL team. Infact all the majority shareholders of teams like Deccan, GMR, Reliance are the teams that have shown success and progress. Unlike the KKR, KXIP etc.

But its good that he exposed the unprofessional handling of the Kochi bid and the heavy external influence from the politicians. If what he said and tweeted was rubbish, I doubt this thread would exist.

He should not have kept his mouth shut, rather he should have gotten it investigated and taken the appropriate steps to disqualify the franchise. If we was unable to do that due to external/internal pressure, he should have resigned his post. What he did was unprofessional and it opened up a Pandora's box and ended he getting investigated himself. Of course it would have been easier for him to have taken proper steps to disqualify them if he himself was clean, which he wasn't.

KOLKATA: It was originally supposed to mark the expansion of the Indian Premier League (IPL) into a 10-team format. But several twists of fate later, IPL 4 may well turn out to be even leaner than preceding editions, with only seven teams in the fray. The 10-day deadline set by BCCI to the owners of Team Kochi expires at 6pm Wednesday. A last-ditch meeting is scheduled at 11.30am, but three individuals in the know told TOI there is little hope of a resolution at this stage. IPL sources said barring a miracle, the fourth edition of IPL will feature only seven teams - Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kolkata Knight Riders, Deccan Chargers, Delhi Daredevils and new entrants Sahara Pune Warriors. Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab were axed by the IPL Governing Council on October 10. In case the Kochi franchise too is disqualified, it will be back to the familiar round-robin league (double-headers) with each of the seven teams playing the other six twice on a home-and-away basis and the top four qualifying for the semifinals. This will see a reduction in the players' workload. With the number of matches coming down from 60 in the last edition to 46, each team will play at least 12 matches against 14 earlier. Leaner & Meaner? -10-day deadline given by BCCI set to expire, still no sign of Kochi team owners having settled differences -In case of 7-team IPL, each team will play at least 12 matches. Total games will drop from 60 earlier to 46 -With each team allowed maximum of 30 players (including 10 foreigners), many players could go unsold in next auction.

KOLKATA: With less than 24 hours to go before the 10-day deadline set by BCCI to the owners of Team Kochi expires, there is no indication that the issue will be resolved in time, meaning IPL 4 could well be a seven-team affair. In such a scenario, a majority of the Indian as well as foreign players will have to contend with reduced pay packets simply because supply will exceed demand. Of the 400-plus players expected to figure on the auction list, almost half will remain unsold as the seven franchises can pick only 210 players with the BCCI having put a cap of 30 players (including 10 foreigners) per team. The franchises will be spoilt for choice, but will have to bid wisely as they try and assemble well-balanced sides. Barring new entrants Pune, the other six franchises will have the option of retaining up to four players. But the cost of retaining players is quite high - $1.8m for the first, $1.3m for the second, $900,000 for third and $500,000 for the fourth. So, franchises will find it hard to retain more than one of their star players, especially as the cap on their auction purse has been pegged at $9 million. Mumbai Indians are likely to retain Sachin Tendulkar, CSK will keep M S Dhoni and Delhi Daredevils are inclined to pin their faith on Virender Sehwag. The rest are likely to go under the hammer in the auctions.
