I am surprised if anyone finds this surprising. Such things are very common in a war. It's stupid to even assume that armed forces will be fair in their attack and never kill civilians in a war. Murders, rapes and tortures of civilians happen in every war. War itself is an inhuman act and we are stupid if we expect them to be human and highly judicial in everything they do. That war should not have happened in the first place. Imagine yourself getting into a fight with some guy. Will you exercise caution and how and where you are hitting him? You will go ahead and shower punches irrespective of the results. a war is similar. Those who win get brutal. Power is a bad thing, it gets to head very easily. When you arm people and give them power over helpless civilians, most of them will abuse the power. It will be very rare to find someone be actually judicial in a situation like that.

At least they have rules and regs in place for their troops, yes some will not stick to them. But its not like other countries who have no morality in war. I mean look how some treat their own people, just shudder to think how they would treat others in war. Some people just dont understand that war is dark.

Nothing, absolutely nothing, could be more prepostrous than triviliazing loss of human life, whatever be its nationality, religion, caste or creed, in the name of some fabricated romantic notions of tactics of war or in the guise of a religious crusade. The Al-Qaede and Taliban fighters who mercilessly killl innocent young men, women and children in the name of their God are downright despicable, in the same manner as these cringe-worthy American soldiers for whom war seems to be some sort of killing field where they can casually hone their target practice skills.

What annoys me is that this must be used as a recruiting tool by the likes of AQ and other terror groups. Leave aside the fact that I have significant disagreements with many of the points you had raised, but the last point was simply too irresistible to not counter. I am sorry, the whole ‘History will be judge’ argument is put forward by people who are desperately looking escape routes to salvage their legacies. You can debate perceptions and opinions, but there’s no denying the facts – The Iraq conflict was an unjust, illegal, unnecessary war manufactured out of false ‘evidence’ and phony rhetoric. Everybody knows there were no WMDs in Iraq, everyone knows that Saddam was not an ‘imminent’ threat to the West. And here’s the thing – Make no mistake, there are just and unjust military interventions. No from the Allied forces of the 2nd world war had to justify their intervention against the Nazis and Fascists of Germany, Italy and Japan. It was the right thing to do to stop that inhuman genocide. No one had to come out back then and say ‘We did what we thought was right. Now history will be the judge..’. Everyone knew it was the right thing to do. No one had to justify the intervention of the West in the Bosnian genocide to stop the ethnic cleansing of Bosnian Muslims by Serbs. It was the right thing to do.. No one back then had to come out and say ‘History will be the judge..’. No one had to justify the intervention of the UN to stop the ethnic cleansing of East Timor Christians and ultimately liberate East Timor from the clutches of Indonesia.. No one back then had to come out and say ‘History will be the judge..’. No one had morally justify the invasion of Afghanistan to wipe out the Taliban. The whole world opinion was by the US side, when they did what they had to, to eliminate the Taliban and their Al-Qaeda allies. Yet, the war in Iraq is probably the only armed conflict in post WWII history when a Western power is trying to cobble together moral justifications for its actions and we all know why. History has already GIVEN its judgment. It was a immoral war fought out of fabricated evidence to satisfy the paranoia of a small, hawkish, extremely right-wing section of the Bush administration.
