Going to buy Nikon D5000. Is it a good buy? Any bad experiences?
One of my friends uses the D5000 and is pretty happy with it. Though w/ Nikon, I usually find that it's like feast or famine. When compared to Canon, there is not a huge range of "good" lenses (like F4 zooms) for entry level offerings. While the semi-pro to pro level gear is awesome with the new crop body D7000 ($1300) and the full frame (FF) offerings of D700 ($2500) and higher. The F2.8 zooms (cost $1500 onwards each) are top notch, along with new primes like 24G, 35G and 85G (Approx $2000 each). Nikon bodies have creative lighting built in to them so you can control external flashes from your camera. The AF on high end Nikon bodies (D7000 and up) is superb The kit lens that comes w/ D5000 is probably not that great so you will have to invest in some lenses like Tokina 11-16mm (which is 16-24mm on a crop body like D5000) and Tamron or Nikon 17-55 (approx 26-82mm on crop) F2.8 zoom. You could even opt for the Sigma 30mm 1.4 or Nikon 35mm F1.8 prime. The 18-200 zoom for crop bodies (DX) is rated pretty good as well. Canon on the other hand has a wide selection of decent lenses. You could go for the 60D and then it has some good selection of F4 lenses like 17-40 and 70-200 F4 IS. You could also use 3rd part lenses (same as with Nikon) like Tokina 11-16mm and Tamron or Canon's 17-55 F2.8 zoom .... newer Canon bodies like 60D and 7D have CLS built in to them too to control external flashes from camera If you are looking at primes like Sigma's 30mm 1.4, 50mm 1.5 and 85mm 1.4 then they will work available for both Canon and Nikon If you are a videographer or like shooting videos w/ DSLRs than Canon has an advantage. In short, if you are looking to use semi pro to pro level gear than Nikon is awesome. If you like F4 zooms and like to shoot video on DSLRs than Canon has a slight edge. If video is not that important and you would be using 3rd party lenses like ones from Tokina, Tamron or Sigma, then you can't go wrong with either! I hope this helps!

My dad has the Nikon D700 12.1MP DSLR with 18-200mm Zoom It's wicked!
Nikon 18-200 zoom is mainly for DX (crop) bodies like D5000, D90 and D7000 though! .... For FF bodiles like D700, may be you could recommend a 24-120 F4 or 28-300 lens to him, if distortion throughout the range (which can be corrected in PP) is not a big issue for him. Otherwise can't go wrong with 24-70 zoom. Tamron 28-75 is a good cost effective solution too

I think he just got a good deal on the package of body + lense:giggle: I don't think he even uses all the features or the full range zoom as he takes random pics of cars, houses, landscapes, family pics, parks, trees, mountains and what not! He once took a picture of a single leaf which was absolutely terrific. If I find it, I will be sure to post it.

Tell your dad, he can't use that 18-200 zoom on FF body :giggle: .... as I said suggest him to sell it through something like craigslist or kijiji and get the Tamron 28-75 or one of 50mm F 1.4 primes from Nikon or sigma for general shooting and low light photography
