Jayasuriya, Vaas in preliminary World Cup squad

Sri Lanka have sprung a couple of surprises by including Sanath Jayasuriya and Chaminda Vaas in their 30-member preliminary squad for the 2011 World Cup. Seamer Nuwan Pradeep is the only uncapped player in the list, which will be pruned to 15 ahead of the tournament which will be hosted in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Jayasuriya has rarely featured in Sri Lanka's plans in recent times, and managed just 15 runs in six outings during the 2010 World Twenty20 in West Indies. The two-match T20 series against New Zealand that was his last international assignment; he has since been ignored for all formats of the game. Vaas, who, like Jayasuriya, was a part of Sri Lanka's successful 1996 World Cup side, has been out of the national team since July 2009, and last played an ODI in August 2008. All 14 teams participating in the tournament have to announce their preliminary line-ups by December 19, and zero in on the final fifteen before January 19 next year. You'll take Vaas of 37 over many of your seamrs in the ODI game. Won't you? Vaas still has it. Player of the domestic 20-20 in England last time. Bowled superbly, and opened batting and hammered some runs too. Has picked up 5k of pace and bowling in low 130s now. Kulasekara, Malinga Murali and Vaas could very well be SL's bowling line up with Thisara Perera and Mathews doing 5th bowlers job. May be Vaas might get dropped for Randiv. But on SL tracks which offers plenty of seam, 5 seamer attack is a very likely possibility.

Ha Ha! Jaya is certainly old and should be looking after his seat and children, I agree with out. But that fella is a real fitness geek. He'll beat a guy like Yuvraj at 100m sprint hands down. Jaya is fit than lot of SL younger players too.

Jayasuriya is probably the most overrated ODI batsman to have ever played the game. It's a joke to suggest a batsman averaging 32.43 as 'great'. As regards to his 300+ ODI wickets, I'll quote Jeff Thomson,

"Lee's bowled well in one-day games against a team of no-hopers. One-day cricket is a joke. Kasper has done the hard yards, done nothing wrong. An idiot can get wickets in one-day cricket. Why should he get picked again? It's not as if he is taking a bagful of one-day wickets. If Brad Hogg, Andrew Symonds and Darren Lehmann take wickets in one-day cricket then what does that tell you about bowling in one-day cricket?"

Destructive and an impact player but only on feather beds. This guy had an average of 40 in tests and 32 in ODIs. He hit the bowlers all around the park but only in India, SL, Pakistan and Sharjah. 1 Century a piece in Aus,Eng an average of 15 in SA, no 100 even in WI. Don't you guys feel ashamed of comparing him with Sehwag?? Sehwag has scores of 195 and 151 in Australia. 100 in England and a 100 in SA. He did struggle last time around but I hope he makes amends this time around.
