Vijay is probably doing the toughest job of all. Facing new ball against Steyn. On this pitch involving in two 40 plus opening partnership against rampaging Steyn is not an easy job. Vijay got one peach after another in the first innings. I would keep him as we are not going to play on these kind of pitches every day.
M Vijay does one thing very well, he leaves the ball very very well. In the 1st innings he looked assured till a point of time before Steyn really roughed him up.

I was once faced with stiff opposition for suggesting that Pujara would do better than Raina in SA. The thread is still around, but surprisingly the people aren't. :hehe: Diss Raina only to invite the resident experts' wrath, for, scoring a 100 on a highway is a bigger achievement than- 1. Superior Technique. 2. Ability of playing the short ball. 3. Being highly recommended by coaches. 4. Being endorsed by ex and current players.

I remember and i recommended your views. To play Raina at Centurion was a foolish move. Selection should always be of horses for the courses types. IT's ok to play Raina in India but abroad, its useless.

Its fine to play Raina on Indian pitches, for he has an ability to bully the bowlers there. But then picking him in places like SA and Australia is inviting trouble. Also, it is quite shameful that the man is yet to improve.

Yeah, we have just seen Pujara scored a century after century, only Raina has failed :giggle: All other batsman have dominated the SA bowling, only Raina didnt :giggle: All have excellent technique and temperament to play in SA conditions, only Raina doesnt :giggle: Pujura has failed in 3 of his 4 innings so far in his Intl career and he is getting hailed as God sent, whereas Raina is bashed beyond imagination...so much for rational thoughts here

1. Pujara has always deserved this slot more than the Suppaa King, Raina. 2. He has done a great job in the domestic circuit and forced his way through on performance, something which Raina hasn't done as well as Pujara. 3. It was absurd to see Raina jump the line with the average returns he's had in the domestic circuit. 4. Give the man some time to settle down. He's atleast a technically better batsman than Raina. If you think otherwise, don't reply. 5. Pujara has done a fantastic job in the limited chances he's had. Atleast he'd not had fantastic 5 ball cameos and got out on ducks against the bouncer. He's atleast made an attempt to settle down, unlike our beloved Rambo. 6. If Raina can be persisted with, why not Pujara? 7. Raina gets the stick he does coz he deserves it. Which kind of a nut plays those kind of stupid shots when he already knows that bouncer is all he's gonna get? What was his level of practice? 8. Raina needs to hit the nets and improve his technique against the short ball. Its simple. If he can't, we have a decent bench. 9. Feel sorry for Suresh, but then he's gotta correct that fatal flaw. He is not doing himself any justice if he is a sitting duck and 1 ball is all it needs to get him out. 10.Ideally, both should be playing together. To give you credit, you've atleast manned up and replied. So kudos on that count.

1. Maybe for you. For me and most others, Raina deserved it every bit. Raina made his test debut after 100 ODIs and 5 years into international cricket, after proving his talent at the highest level. 2. If domestic performances were the sole criteria, then Badrinath deserved it more than Pujara. 3. When Sachin jumped the line @ Age 16, over the many domestic performers at that stage, how many will complain on that today. Its about identifying a fine talent and persisting with him. 4. Do the same to Raina. Who are you to decide how is one technically superior to other, when the other is not yet tested in Intl cricket. Pujara can have many. How are you qualified to conclude now, who is technically better than other How many fans knew about Raina's supposed weakness about short pitched stuff, before he got worked out by Flintoff in one match. Pujara got out twice to short pitched stuff, so can I conclude that he sucks at it. How about Raina strong technique against spin. Pujara was even struggling against Harris last innings. 5. Yeah fantastic job, failing in 3 out of 4 innings. Wow different levels of expectations for each player 6. Both should be persisted, not chop and change. Raina should be higher in the pecking order. 7. As though everyone played some awesome shots to get out. Raina played in much tougher conditions in 1st innings of 1st test. Pujara played in comparatively better batting conditions, yet failed. Now who failed badly 8. Fully agreed 9. How many players have no flaw in Intl cricket. Even the best had it, Ganguly had it for his whole career. You don't dismiss a good talent for having a flaw. Yuvraj still cant play quality spin, so didnt he get enough chances to perform. And lastly, keep this technique nonsense to yourself. You are not a cricketing expert to say who has better technique than other, specially when the sample size is very less. Neither do I. Domestic and International cricket are different ball game. There were some so called 'superior technique' players like SS das, Akash Chopra, Badrinath who floundered @ highest level, whereas Sehwag and Dhoni have great records at test level and even Ganguly had a lengthy test career. Its the performance which matters. Look at Steve Waugh And hell yeah, He is a superking Raina not a Gayrider Pujara :giggle:

Well done Jinxed the Guy. But if anyone will be Certainity in the Batting Line up in Future, Its this Guy. Tontee Tontee Specialists like Raina should stay away from the Team AMAP. So his Lungi King Fans.

1. Maybe for you. For me and most others' date=' Raina deserved it every bit. Raina made his test debut after 100 ODIs and 5 years into international cricket, after proving his talent at the highest level.[/quote'] Yes he did, But has he improved a Bit on Conditions that are not Asian Flat Beds? He was a Member of the Indian ODI team that toured SA in 2006, his mode of Dismissals suggests that he has worked a Zilch on his game in last 4 years.
2. If domestic performances were the sole criteria' date=' then Badrinath deserved it more than Pujara.[/quote'] Yes i do agree Badri deserved the Most, Mistreatment was handed out to him. But not anymore. He should have been tried after Gangu retired.Right Now, Pujara deserves the most.
Its not just getting Out, Its the mode of dismissals, Its not the fact Raina didnt make much Run, Its the fact the time he spent on wicket he looked as good as a Tailender, Not just short balls, But even the Good length ones. How about Raina strong technique against spin. Pujara was even struggling against Harris last innings.
5. Yeah fantastic job' date=' failing in 3 out of 4 innings. Wow different levels of expectations for each player[/quote'] I hope i have given good enough explanation about this Point above.
6. Both should be persisted' date=' not chop and change. Raina should be higher in the pecking order.[/quote'] Raina should Work on his technique, Not just short balls overall Play. He struggled even against a Trundler like Kallis for deliveries going across him from the good length. Reminded me bit of Yuvi's struggle in recent times.
7. As though everyone played some awesome shots to get out. Raina played in much tougher conditions in 1st innings of 1st test. Pujara played in comparatively better batting conditions' date=' yet failed. Now who failed badly[/quote'] The difficult condition was when Raina played was in the First innings of the First Test. In the 2nd innings It was a Flat bed. Where as Pujara played on a Green track which was difficult in both the innings. Am no way justifying Pujara's failure, But want to point out the main reason why Pujara has been favoured over Raina, Its because the time both spent, both looked different. Raina looked like he doesnt belong and wasnt at all comfortable in any of the deliveries he faced. Pujara looked very comfortable as long as he was there, he played very well in the first inngs as long as he was there only to throw it away. It was there to hit, He mistimed it. In the 2nd Inngs, he was done in by a Very good delivery similar to what Murali Vijay got, That jumped from nowhere. Just the ball previous his dismissal it kept low. And he didnt guide it to the slips he played it well only to drag it to his stumps.
9. How many players have no flaw in Intl cricket. Even the best had it' date=' Ganguly had it for his whole career. You don't dismiss a good talent for having a flaw. Yuvraj still cant play quality spin, so didnt he get enough chances to perform.[/quote'] Agreed, i want him to sort out his problems like Waugh, Gangu did and get back with a band. We need a Flawless Raina when the legends retire.

Sigh! You are biased.
How do you know I am biased when I have not added my opinion to this thread? I was only talking about the name calling that you have resorted to. I thought you changed, but as I said old habits don't go away that easily!

He's brilliant and was spotted years ago by Ganguly, just glad Dhoni recognised his potential and replaced him for Raina who you dont feel confident watching when facing bowlers like Steyn or Morkel that he will survive. His innings against Australia on day 5 showed he is the man to bat at 4/5 for years to come. Some of his shots are similar to VVS.

I assured i wouldnt resort to Name Calling of Cricketers.
