Forget Indian history, Laxman is probably the greatest player in the 2nd innings in cricket history. Look at Joburg 06, and that 50 he had which extended the lead. Look at Perth and another 50 he added. There's that other 50 in which that awesome partnership with Sachin in Mumbai 2004.

I'm not sure. The great thing about the last period is that at least someone has stepped up to the plate when required 9 times out of 10, whoever it is. In that sense hard to discern the most valuable...but certainly without Zaheer our attack can be horribly toothless 9 times out of 10.

Both ZK and VVS are invaluable and I hope they can prevail over the niggles and injuries to play Tests for a few more years.

Despite all incredible knocks that SRT, VVS, RD and VS played, in my opinion most valuable player for India in current scenario is Zaheer Khan. Among all players of indian team, his absence is felt immediately and most acutely. We can afford to go in a test without any of our great batsmen but it's really difficult to go without Zaheer Khan (Centurion test??) Not to say that Zaheer definitely is better player than everybody else, but lack of other options in fast bowling department makes him most valuable player at the moment.

VVS is the true MVP, no doubt about that. Sachin is the greatest batsman of the modern era and has made immense contribution to Indian cricket, but in terms of influence of one player in the positive outcome of test matches for India, I rate VVS slightly ahead of Sachin and RD as well. All three are stalwarts in my book.

Yes Zak is a very valuable player, but his absence is felt more because outside of him our bowling sucks most of the time. We have a shortage of quality quicks and medium pacers in tests and Zak's absence reveals it more. In the batting dept, the difference is not that obvious. VVS is the MVP in my book, but he is not light years ahead of Sachin, RD, VS, etc. The gap in batting is much smaller.

As some1 pointed earlier... It has to be Sehwag.. The guy has to cope to new ball on a fresh pitch all the time... Sehwag IMO is the biggest matchwinner for India in Tests and T20s.. Sachin and Zaheer will come close second
