vvvslaxman Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Ganguly may pale in comparison with Laxman, Dravid, Sachin. But he is still far better than Raina any day.
Andy Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Ganguly may pale in comparison with Laxman' date=' Dravid, Sachin. But he is still far better than Raina any day.[/quote'] As an ODI Player he was better than the Most mentioned, Except off course GOD.
pensionplan Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Why specific to ODI's alone when the matter being discussed is about the ability to play short pitch stuff as was Ganguly's observation on Raina. If so Test cricket should be the one that needs attention when continually one is Tested without any restrictions on overs bowled, field placements etc.

Particularly the last ODI the way he was dismissed. Which he is right on. Now even if we talk about Gangulys cricket in Test matches which is not in the context of this Topic, 7000 Runs and one of the Most succesful of our Batters in Test Cricket Last time we toured SA. So Ganguly has the eligibility to talk on Raina's Game irrespective of what your Personal Opinion is.
The Outsider Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 How does it even freaking matter whether Ganguly could play the short ball or not? Does everyone have to be Viv Richards incarnated before he can comment on someone's ability to play the short ball? Does everyone have to be better than Marshall before making a comment on fast bowling? Might as well shut down this forum in that case. Point is he made a valid cricketing observation about Raina's technique against the short ball. Instead of discussing that this thread is full of ad hominem attacks on Ganguly's ability against the short ball, which has absolutely nothing to do with the topic. How many of you can play the short ball better than Ganguly to comment on his ability?

asterix Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 I hope this should put fire in Raina's belly..No harm in senior guys questioning you..Should take in right spirits.. However Ganguly should carry himself in a better way instead of starting to criticise each and every youngster..That's why I like Kumble. He has specific plans and works on them, instead of making too much of noise.. As they say, " Cheel Ki ......... Mein, ......... Kum Chillana Jyada Hota Hain"...
Raghav_12 Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Care to bring on the Record of other Indians in SA against SA? 43 + average with a Hundred in SA against SA given the fact he never played against them after 2001 cant be bad. Is it? But then his overall ODI average in SA,after removing matches against Kenya and Namibia, is 31, as posted by Sir John as well. http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/player/28779.html?class=2;filter=advanced;host=3;opposition=1;opposition=2;opposition=3;opposition=4;opposition=5;opposition=7;opposition=8;opposition=9;orderby=default;template=results;type=allround You have definitely picked a wrong stats to support your case. Ganguly's inability to play short ball is no secret. Although that doesn't mean that he can not assess player on that aspect.
Andy Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Few people needs to understand he wasnt being Critical rather pointed out his problem. Read the Quote properly FFS.

I know that stat, I am still asking bring on the Stats of Others when it Comes to Playing SA in SA.
Sid Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Ganguly said something for the better of Raina and this thread has turned out to be a "What has Ganguly done in SA conditions"
Andy Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Ganguly said something for the better of Raina and this thread has turned out to be a "What has Ganguly done in SA conditions" How dare that haramkhor IPL discard comment on Raina. How many runs he made against opposition that was not Namibia, Afganisthan, Ireland, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh.
Raghav_12 Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 I know that stat' date=' I am still asking bring on the Stats of Others when it Comes to Playing SA in SA.[/quote'] You are being very selective in stats picking. If you trying to highlight Ganguly's ability to play on SA tracks, then you should look at his record in SA against all worthy opponents. Should not limit yourself to matches against SA only. Ganguly is not the only one. Others have also had more than 40+ averages. http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?class=2;filter=advanced;home_or_away=2;opposition=3;orderby=batting_average;qualmax1=100;qualmin1=40;qualval1=batting_average;team=6;template=results;type=batting Again, I am not saying that Ganguly should not have made that statement. And as a player who played for India so long in top order, he can definitely question Raina or anybody.

There is a reason why i am Being selective. The comment was made about playing on SA tracks, and about Playing in SA. His eligibility to comment on that issue was questioned, Hence i resorted to that. Kohli has played 3 matches only as Yet. Ahead of him is Rahul, who deserves to be. But Ganguly talking about Playing Shortballs in SA was made like Prasad talking about Bowling Fast. Refer to the first 5 Posts.
Sachinism Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Exactly' date=' By that Logic ICF should be closed down.[/quote'] Why should the forum be closed down if Ganguly can't play short balls
Andy Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 Why should the forum be closed down if Ganguly can't play short balls If Ganguly cannot Question any players ability, then what are we doing here? We shouldnt question others too. :dontknow:
Sachin=GOD Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 If a batsman like Ganguly does not have the right to question/advice youngsters like Raina then who has that right - Ajit Agarkar??? or maybe Parthiv Patel should advice Raina on how to play in SA or maybe Devang Gandhi :haha:

Malcolm Merlyn Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 How much Goddy avgs in SA? 3 out of 4 players on this list were not the best players of short bowling. http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/stats/index.html?class=2;filter=advanced;home_or_away=2;opposition=3;orderby=batting_average;qualmax1=100;qualmin1=40;qualval1=batting_average;team=6;template=results;type=batting
yoda Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 How does it even freaking matter whether Ganguly could play the short ball or not? Well it kind of does. Look at it this way. Pretty much everyone knows that Raina has a problem with the short ball. Now what is needed is not another person (even of the stature of Ganguly) to add to that. What that guy needs is someone who can rectify that issue. Now can Ganguly offer some suggestions on how Raina can rectify it? Even if he has some suggestions, will it be credible, given that he himself had issues with the short ball during his career? Does everyone have to be Viv Richards incarnated before he can comment on someone's ability to play the short ball? Does everyone have to be better than Marshall before making a comment on fast bowling? Might as well shut down this forum in that case. Good point, but there is a difference between some no name internet bozos commenting on anything and everything under the sun (:giggle:) vs an ex player commenting on someone's weakness when it was his own weakness which he couldn't rectify. If we are all supposed to be better than the players before we comment on them, like Andy said, ICF needs to be shutdown. :winky:
