The Outsider Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 I've always backed him and had faith in his batting abilities, but really there is a time after which numbers have to be racked up on the cricket field. I know a lot here had given up on him a while back. And now for me, Rohit Sharma has passed that point and unless he does something dramatic in domestic cricket or A tours should not be brought back in. There are many other cricketers putting in the hard yards in domestic cricket who should be given a fair run before Rohit is recycled. 60 ODIs is no short run - an average of 27 and a strike rate of 75 is poor. That's a good enough sample and that's a poor return.

Appears as if we want to go in with 7 batsmen no matter what form or quality the batsmen playing are of

Ram Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 Rohit Sharma faces the same problem that Dinesh Karthik faces. Both of them have a very Sehwag-feel to their ODI game. Much like Sehwag, they just don’t seem to know how to pace their innings at all. You can sense they want to score every ball, but you also sense that every time they play out a dot-ball, it puts tremendous pressure on them. And as we all know, with pressure comes indiscretion, which in turns leads to bad shot selection and consequent dismissal. There’s no doubts whatsoever that Rohit has all the shots in the book. He’s good against both and spin and his technique will come in handy in tricky batting conditions. But he just doesn’t have the temperament to construct a meaningful ODI innings. Lets not forget that he, along with Pujara and M.Vijay, are the future of the Indian test batting but in terms of ODI, he has had a free run for far too long, mostly due to the promise of his potential and his Mumbai roots. I'd pick Saurabh Tiwary in the ODI side ahead of Rohit anytime of the week.

Ram Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 Rohit can learn a lot from watching how Sachin paces his innings, especially in ODIs. Clearly, this is not a question of a deficit of talent or ability. Rohit has an abundance of both, he just has to get his thinking right. In fact, he doesn’t even have to look as far back as Sachin. Virat Kohli is an outstanding example of how to pace your innings, especially during chases. For someone still in the infancy of his career, Kohli is very accomplished at pacing his innings.
