JOHANNESBURG: India coach Gary Kirsten is not in the running for a similar job in the South African side but could be involved with Mumbai Indians in the IPL, a report said on Wednesday. According to the report, Kirsten's good rapport with Sachin Tendulkar could lead to the former South African opener being appointed in a top position in Mumbai Indians which is to appoint a director of coaching before the IPL 4. "Indian cricket had hoped to persuade Kirsten to change his mind about not renewing his contract, but gave up on it this week. Future options for Kirsten could involve the Indian Premier League," a report in 'The Times' said. "The close relationship that Kirsten has with Sachin Tendulkar may lead to co-operation between the two at the Mumbai Indians, who are expected to appoint a director of coaching before the next IPL season," it said. "Kirsten could easily take up such a position while still developing his international academy that is in the planning stage at Claremont Cricket Club in Cape Town," it added. Kirsten, who will quit as India's coach after the World Cup ends in April, is reluctant to take up the Proteas job when caretaker Corrie van Zyl steps down, also in April. The report also said current India bowling coach Eric Simons could not be ruled out as a possible candidate to replace Kirsten. "The Indian cricket board has not yet started a process to recruit a successor to Kirsten, but it is not unlikely that it will approach Simons as a candidate. Simons, a former Proteas all-rounder and national coach, was highly regarded by the Indian team when he came aboard this summer," the report said. Meanwhile, the South African coaching job is likely to go to Duncan Fletcher. The former England coach has been advising the South Africans and it is understood he would be available. Fletcher's coaching credentials would be hard to resist for Cricket South Africa, whose chief executive Gerald Majola recently promised a 'big name' for the job when Van Zyl's term ends, the report said. I thought he quit to spend more time with his family. But then again IPL is only a few weeks a year and he'll be free to spend the rest of his time with his family

With Indian cricket, he has headache for whole year. With Mumbai, he would have to deal with only 1 or 2 months adn would be paid good too for that. He is playing smart offcourse.

This will the worst choice EVER, even if they think about him. Just imagine, this guy couldn't sort out Ishant and Sreesanth's no-ball problem as a bowling coach, what'll he do as the head coach? It'll be better if India are without any coach like they were after the last WC, instead of going for these rubbish candidates!

Kirsten is smart to leave the Indian team coaching job at the right time just like John Buchanan did with Aus before the senior players retires. The difficult part was just around the corner for Kirsten to work with young Indian team and to maintain the number 1 ranking but he opted out. Kirsten is an overrated coach who is not responsible for rise of India in test rankings. Under Kirsten, the fitness levels of all young players & bowlers have gone down, he failed to teach the young Indian players how to play the short ball. Kirsten was just a man manager who quietly milking the hefty pay check from BCCI.

What significant changes have we seen under Kirsten? I think he stayed more out of the way than anything. Anyways, he did a good job of at least not messing up.

I think most significant thing he did was let Dhoni take over and be the captain. His task was to keep them motivated, make them mentally tough, our test team is tough team to beat. Lot of kudos should go to Kirsten for doing that. He created winning atmosphere, and you can even in ODI team even when they were down and out had courage and fight to come back and win the games that they should have lost. Only blemish is non performance in ICC tournaments under him and I hope he can make amends big time with the title of WC

A good manager can control all the egos and direct the players in the right direction both mentally and physically. I mean you have to bloody sit their and teach your bowlers how to bowl at a international level. You would think they have it all to bowl at that level.

coach's contribution is overrated. kirsten has earned a lot of praise from indian players, but u have look at his actual role in the team...he just took care of net sessions, had 1x1 coaching with players whenever they asked for it. kept a low profile and stayed away from the media. not much input in terms of strategy or selection. he was basically a glorified practice supervisor, much like john buchanan. it shouldnt be too hard to replace him.
