Plus his music is good. If he reached somehow and he was cr@p, no one is going to talk about him.

The quality of music composed by Rahman is no better than any of the other greats mentioned in this thread, so that in my view makes him on par with the greats but the point you have raised about his music serving as a tool to integrate people all over India might be true. But i dont consider that as a metric to grade him the best among all the Indian music directors.

The comparison cannot be made between this song and Minsara Poove because both are different, but i do think it is one of Raja's best compositions. The "yamunai aatrile" song from Thalapathi is another gem! With respect to Vande Maatram, well yes it is one of the most patriotic songs ever to be composed by a music director but how does that make him greater than Raja or any other music director?! Are you implying that because Rahman has a far greater reach that automatically makes him the best? This. I have mentioned this in my one of earlier posts as well that notion of Rahman being greatest may have something to do with the wider reach he has enjoyed (because of changed world scenarios). Rahman getting multiple Oscars doesn't add anything to this discussion. We know he has done much better works than Slumdog which went unnoticed by world. Music of Slumdog would have also gone unnoticed, had it not been for a English movie by a world renowned director.

Maybe if RD Burman or MSV or Raja had done majority of their works in this era they would have reached a far higher status than Rahman.

So who in Rahman's time has done the same if it just a product of our time and not due to Rahman's genius? And Raja did a lot of music during the same time as Rahman. What did he do during the same "time"? Did you listen to the music in Paa? LOL And have you heard him sing the Kwaja song? For a guy born in Kodambakkam and who is still shy to talk in Hindi based on his recent Saregamapaa visit, that rendition was pure genius.

Well all the contemporary music directors are just mediocre or above average at the best. So there is no one actually to be honest. Rahman is the only great composer to have emerged in the last 20 years. But again just because others in his era are mediocre we cannot celebrate Rahman to be the greatest :winky:

Whatever, in my life I have listened to (and liked) Rahman easily more than anyother musician.

Rd burman is soo overrated.His music was really average and he was copycat just like his shishya anu malik.I think most icf members are bengalis thats y they are rating him soo highly.
