World Cup is not about Sachin alone: Kapil Dev

"Why Sachin?" he thundered, when asked how important this World Cup was for Sachin Tendulkar. "It's an insult to everybody else if you keep asking about Sachin all the time. Winning the World Cup is as important to the rest of the team as it is to Sachin, to you and me and the billions who want India to do well. It's not about Sachin alone." Until then, it had seemed like Kapil was busy soaking in what his contemporaries - Clive Lloyd, Allan Border, Imran Khan, Arjuna Ranatunga and Steve Waugh - had just said. At that moment though, he did many things by not allowing the thought of this being 'Tendulkar's World Cup' to seep into the mind. He not only addressed the fact that too much pressure was being put on Tendulkar's dream of winning the trophy, but also reminded how passionate India is about this game.

Kapil's outburst seems valid.

I think its been crazy the past 2 weeks with every damn Indian cricketer telling the reporters that we want to do it for SRT and stuff. They are just saying what the media wants to hear i guess, at least Kapil has stated the truth.

C'mon the guy has played for 20 years, been in 5 world cups, so it is natural for the focus being on him and the team winning it for him. No big deal. Ofc it is not just about him.

For once I fully agree with Kapil. Just like the majority of us he seems to have a gotten a little tired of all this let us win for Sachin talk that have been doing rounds a lot lately.

thank god someone had the sense to speak sense. the sachin worship recently has gotten to be a joke. the last time the aussies tried to "do it" for steve waugh the indians shocked them in 2004 in the test series. the whole team needs to perform brillantly to win the cup, not just a single player.

Wow At some of the 12-15 years old criticising Kapil, Don't get me wrong I am a Sachin fan too but Kapil has been there done that and here is a guy who at once held the record for the highest score in ODI ,Highest wickettaker in ODI,Tests,Captained the team to the only WC glory ever (not counting T20),Voted as the Indian cricketer of the century. If anyone has earned the right to exercise an opinion against anything about cricket including the lord almighty himself it is Kapil

Dude read you cricket history' date='You will know who Kapil is:winky:[/quote'] cant expected anything better from a worshiper. many of them would jump off the roof top when sachin retires and others will go into permanent depression.

I think Kapil has all the rights to make such statement. Not right to say India has to win it for Sachin only. It's other way that Sachin would like to win it for India before he retires. However, if players like Gambhir thinks they have to win it for Sachin then it's their personal choice. In any case cup would be either won for both of them (India and Sachin) or for none of them :-)
